More than 69,000 Palestinians are known to have been killed in Israel's genocide in Gaza but thousands more are missing, believed dead.
Hundreds of bodies have been returned from Israeli custody since the ceasefire began in October.
Many show signs of torture and mutilation and cannot be identified.

On Monday, Gaza's health authorities buried 38 bodies released from Israeli custody, that could not be named.
Thousands more are believed to have been killed by Israeli bombardment, but their bodies are trapped beneath tonnes of rubble.

Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azzoum has visited families trying to identify the bodies of their loved ones in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, Palestine.

The Palestinian Center for the Defense of Prisoners documents the testimony of editor Khaled Barakat, a survivor of detention in the "Sde Teiman" detention camp:

🔹I spent 130 days in the Sde Teiman detention camp with my eyes blindfolded and my hands and feet shackled, and police dogs would enter on us daily and attack us.

🔹My ribs were broken, along with those of a number of prisoners, due to their strength and ferocity, and up until the moment of my release, I was not seen by any doctor, and the pains and aches continue as a result of their improper healing.

🔹One of the hardest things we faced in Sde Teiman was using the bathrooms—it was only once a day in the best of circumstances, and we would relieve ourselves while shackled and restrained.

🔹The place consists of a group of iron cages in which a certain number of prisoners are placed, and each large cage holds about 130 detainees who are subjected to minute-by-minute surveillance, and any suspicion of any spontaneous movement would expose us to relentless beatings and insults.

🔹I was transferred to more than one detention camp, and in the Ofer detention camp, I was subjected to torture and beatings for consecutive days, where we were ordered to go out one after the other for brutal beatings with sticks and sharp tools.

🔹One of the prisoners who was beaten with us had diabetes, and after his foot became inflamed for days, maggots started coming out of it; then they transferred him to the hospital, and he returned to us days later with his foot amputated.

🔹The dogs attacked us before entering the prison and during the transfer process; we were subjected to electric shocks while in the transport bus and beaten with iron handles that continued throughout the journey.

🔹The mattresses we slept on were taken away during the winter season, and we had no winter clothing, and most of the prisoners were afflicted with scabies.

🔹Surveillance cameras were everywhere, and we were not allowed to use the bathrooms; we would relieve ourselves in a bucket, and they would refuse to empty it until after its contents had been taken out to the prisoners' rooms.

🔹We were not visited by the Red Cross throughout the detention period, up to threatening us with killing after leaving detention and that they would not let us live in peace, and they told us multiple times that they had bombed our homes and killed all our family members.
