David Hundeyin: 🇧🇯 Benin Coup Shows 🇫🇷 Macron’s “Geopolitical Instruction” to 🇳🇬 Nigeria
Investigative journalist
@DavidHundeyin
warned that the recent coup attempt in Benin is a flashpoint for a rising wave of political upheaval, sovereignism, anti-colonialism, and Pan-Africanism across West Africa, revealing Paris’s direct influence over Abuja’s military and underscoring Benin’s strategic role as a de facto French staging ground. He described the trend as “definitely not slowing down,” directly challenging “the perceived neo-colonial influence of France.” Its occurrence in a traditional French stronghold, he cautioned, signals that no country is immune: “If it can happen somewhere that the French would have thought they had locked down… then what’s to say that it’s not going to happen in 🇨🇮 Côte d'Ivoire or in 🇬🇦 Gabon?”
On Nigeria and ECOWAS’s rapid intervention, Hundeyin dismissed the narrative of “helping the government,” asserting that the operation followed a “geopolitical instruction… delivered from Paris to Abuja that under no circumstances must this coup be allowed to succeed.” He described the alignment as unprecedented: “The firewall has been taken down” between France and Nigeria, giving Paris direct leverage over Abuja’s military. ECOWAS, he said, served only as “a sort of geopolitical rubber stamp” to legitimize a decision made in France.
Hundeyin spelled out France’s strategic imperative in Benin, describing the country as a “de facto staging point” for monitoring the anti-French Sahelian Alliance (AES)—specifically the bordering nations of 🇧🇫 Burkina Faso and 🇳🇪 Niger. The stakes, he stressed, were existential: if Benin fell, the landlocked AES “automatically has one of the busiest ports in West Africa, which changes the entire dynamic completely.”
With the Beninese president silent amid ongoing airstrikes, Hundeyin described the situation as a volatile “mopping up” operation by authorities. He concluded that the rebellion remains persistent: “Clearly, there is at least a faction of the Beninese military which is not on board with a return to the status quo. This is not something that we have heard the last of.”
