Somewhere down Disclosure Road, we will learn about the hooning behaviours of antisocial youngish male segments of various alien “beings”.

Since those star- and galaxy-travellers are here and obviously watching us, I bet that some of them can’t resist the challenge of besting us. Including in hooning lol. Good luck, me gonky cobbers.

    Moon Games by Giorgia Hofer

    apod.nasa.gov

This is not a screen from a video game. Nestled below the treeline, the small mountain church does look like it might be hiding from Moon though. In the well-composed telephoto snapshot, taken on November 23, the church walls are partly reflecting light from terrestrial flood lights. Of course, the Moon is reflecting light from the Sun. At any given time the Sun illuminates fully half of the Moon's surface, also known as the lunar dayside, but on that night only a sliver of its sunlit surface was visible. About three days after New Moon, the Moon was in a waxing crescent phase. The single exposure was captured shortly after sunset in skies near Danta di Cadore, northern Italy, planet Earth.

Geminid Meteor Shower Peaks December 13-14

With a retiring crescent Moon in the mix, prospects for the year’s richest meteor shower are excellent

Drum roll, please. On the night of December 13–14, the annual Geminid meteor shower will reach a crescendo and spangle the sky with shards of the asteroid 3200 Phaethon. Weather permitting, of course! Last year, the nearly full Moon shone all night and erased much of the shower's grandeur. This time around the Moon will be a 26%-illuminated crescent rising alongside Virgo's brightest star Spica around 2:30 a.m. local time. That's close to ideal.

Lunar light-spill should have only a minor effect on the meteors' frequency, which is expected to reach around 150 per hour under ideal circumstances. If you still find what moonlight remains distracting, face north or west to observe the shower. Geminids will appear to stream from a single point in the sky, called the radiant, near the star Castor in Gemini, and dart in every direction so you can't go wrong.

The Geminids are not only consistent, but the shower has also gradually intensified since it was first recognized in the mid-1800s. Back then, the rates were closer to 10–20 meteors per hour. In the early 1960s, the shower was on par with the Perseids, which it has now surpassed. As gravitational perturbations from Jupiter and the other planets gradually nudge the densest part of the stream closer to Earth, numbers should continue to rise until about the year 2200 before declining.

The shower's peak is forecast for 8:00 UT (3 a.m. EST) on December 14th, which makes the pre-dawn hours of the 14th ideal for seeing the highest meteor rates.

Interstellar Comet Is Making Its Closest Approach To Earth This Week

A stray comet from another star swings past Earth this week in one last hurrah before racing back toward interstellar space.

Discovered over the summer, the comet known as 3I/Atlas will pass within 167 million miles (269 million kilometers) of our planet on Friday, December 19, the closest it gets on its grand tour of the solar system.

NASA continues to aim its space telescopes at the visiting ice ball, estimated to be between 1,444 feet and 3.5 miles in size. But it's fading as it exits, so now's the time for backyard astronomers to catch it in the night sky with their telescopes.

The comet will come much closer to Jupiter in March, zipping within 33 million miles. It will be the mid-2030s before it reaches interstellar space, never to return.

It's the third known interstellar object to cut through our solar system. Interstellar comets like 3I/Atlas originate in star systems elsewhere in the Milky Way, while home-grown comets like Halley's hail from the icy fringes of our solar system.

    7) Eliana, Lucas
    8) Ellie, Ezra
    9) Aurora, Asher
    10) Mia, Luca

    2025 (cont'd)

Olivia and Noah aren't budging from their No. 1 titles among BabyCenter parents – but there's plenty of other baby name shakeups to take note of this year.

Olivia and Amelia are hanging on tight to the No. 1 and 2 spots for girls, but the rest of the top 10 has seen some changes: Sophia (No. 3) and Emma (No. 4) traded places; Isabella (No. 5) and Charlotte (No. 6) also flipped; Ellie (No. 8) rose; and Mia (No. 10) fell.

There are two new girl names in the top 10 for the first time ever this year: Eliana (No. 7) and Aurora (No. 9). But that means two other names – Ava (No. 11) and Luna (No. 13) are out.

The top 10 boy names saw less movement – in fact, the top 5 are exactly the same as last year: Noah (No. 1), Liam (No. 2), Oliver (No. 3), Elijah (No. 4), and Mateo (No. 5). Meanwhile, Levi (No. 6) and Lucas (No. 7) traded places. Ezra (No. 8) and Asher (No. 9) didn't move.

The biggest change in the top 10 boy names was in the No. 10 spot: Luca rejoined the top 10 after falling out in 2024, and Leo (now No. 11) dropped.

A new class of girl names is joining the top 100 for the very first time – or rejoining it after years away:

Eloise jumped more than 20 spots to join the top 100 names for the very first time at No. 75.

At No. 84, Sarah is rejoining the top 100 after a year away.

Emersyn climbed a whopping 50 spots to join the top 100 at No. 89.

At No. 92, Sienna is new to the top 100.

Last seen in the top 100 girl names in 2021, Charlie is back at No. 93.

Catalina is in the top 100 for the very first time, at No. 95.

After falling out of the top 100 names in 1943, Josephine is in the top 100 for the first time this century at No. 96.

Juniper is making her first appearance in the top 100, at No. 97.

Oaklynn is debuting in the top 100 at No. 98.

Vivian last appeared in the top 100 in 1934 – and she's back this year at No. 99.

And at No. 100, Kehlani is joining the top 100.

But that means just as many girl names fell out of the top 100 this year: Nevaeh (No. 103), Kennedy (No. 105), Anna (No. 107), Ember (No. 108), Jade (No. 109), Savannah (No. 113), Audrey (No. 118), Cora (No. 119), Natalie (No. 120), Skylar (No. 122), and Oakley (No. 142).

Meanwhile, just like with the top 10, the top 100 boy names saw less of a shakeup:

Malachi is in the top 100 for the first time at No. 91.

After disappearing from the top 100 in 1970, Arthur skyrocketed 44 spots to reenter the top 100 at No. 95.

Ali is making his first appearance in the top 100 at No. 96.

Clocking in at No. 98, Nathaniel is rejoining the top 100 after falling out in 2016.

Hunter (No. 102), Axel (No. 104), Greyson (No. 115), and Max (No. 116) fell out of the top 100 boy names.

Something strange going on with NASA’s MAVEN mission. The spacecraft has been orbiting Mars for ten-odd years now, sending back lots of useful info abt Mars’ atmosphere and ejaculates (gases and ions that went somewhere else), and now it has gone full EMCON.

Funny thing is, this has become apparent after a normal comms blackout, as it orbited behind the planet. It just never reestablished contact. Scott says they think it’s now tumbling, but that they don’t say why they think this. So whatever happened, happened out of line of sight, including actual sight and visual imaging.

Doesn’t that make the hairs on the back of anybody else’s neck stand up? Surely those neck hairs are somehow connected to our sixth sense, our perception of spooky or sly/BS stuff. IMO, this quietness is meant as a message.

If I were the A.I. used by some random well meaning alien other-Children-of-God who did FTL and were pretty sorted, and they wanted to terraform Mars so they could go live there again, I would cap any Earthlings’ sensors of what I was up to. Because Earthilngs have been known to be bad news. And I would do it out of sight, meaning the tumbling impetus, just to be unatributable, a mind-f mystery, to test our reaction. Because science or their version of money or something.

Staight talk. Total Recall, only in reverse. Those aliens will not let us near their new Shangri La/digs. Elon has a target on his back (NASA, not so much, bunch of losers) at the moment, but he probs knows it and will go make money somewhere else.

    The Sky This Week

Sunday, Dec. 21 - Northern winter solstice

Winter in the Northern Hemisphere will officially commence in the Americas on Sunday, Dec. 21, at 10:03 a.m. EST and 7:03 a.m. PST, or 15:03 GMT. At the solstice, the sun will attain its southernmost declination for the year, resulting in the lowest elevation in the sky of the noonday sun, the least amount of solar insolation, and the shortest amount of daylight of the year. Conversely, the Southern Hemisphere will see its highest sun and maximum daylight hours for the year.

Monday, Dec. 22 - Ursids Meteor Shower peaks (predawn)

The Ursids meteor shower, which is produced by particles of debris dropped by the periodic comet 8P/Tuttle, runs from Dec. 17 to 26 every year. The short-duration shower will peak (usually with only 5 to 10 meteors visible in an hour) while Earth is traversing the densest part of the debris field in mid-morning on Monday, Dec. 22 in the Americas, so the best time to watch for Ursid meteors will be before dawn. True Ursids will streak away from the shower's radiant, located between the North Star Polaris and the Big Dipper's handle, but the meteors can appear anywhere in the sky.

Thursday, Dec. 25 - A Christmas star (late evening)

Sirius, the brightest star in Canis Major and in the entire night sky, too, is hard to miss once it clears the trees and rooftops in the southeast by 7:30 p.m. local time. Also known as the Dog Star, it will climb to its highest point in the lower part of the southern sky shortly after midnight local time. If you are walking through your darkened house in the middle of the night, Sirius might catch your eye out a window because it never climbs very high. Sirius is a hot, blue-white, A-class star located only 8.6 light-years from our sun. Its extreme brightness and its low position in the sky combine to produce spectacular flashes of various colors as it twinkles.

    Polar Bear Plunge

Polar plunges aren’t just for the daring. Cold-water swimming has proven psychological and physiological benefits.

Crazy New Yorkers: New Year's Day 2019

On January 1, some hardy souls will greet the new year not by nursing a champagne hangover in bed, but by plunging into frigid water. In New York City, thousands of people participate in a seaside “polar plunge” held annually since 1903. Similarly bone-chilling swims take place across the country and overseas on New Year’s Day.

These brave revelers may be on to something. Icy immersion isn’t without risk, and there’s no single temperature range used to study dunking or swimming. But a growing body of science suggests cold water may hold benefits for mental and physical health alike.

Lee Hill, an exercise physiologist at McGill University in Montreal, has a long history with cold-water swimming. A former competitive swimmer and coach, Hill used to take kilometers-long swims, sometimes in water below 10° Celsius, in their native South Africa. Though not for the faint of heart, these chilly dips create an unmatched feeling, Hill says. “You feel Zen. … You feel every part of your body. You’re aware of your breathing. You forget about everything [else].”

Diving into icy cold water triggers a pair of conflicting physiologic responses, says James Mercer, a professor emeritus at the Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø who has studied cold-water swimming. One is the “diving response,” which is meant to conserve oxygen underwater. Heart rate slows, breathing is inhibited, blood vessels constrict, and blood flow is shunted to critical organs. The second is the “cold shock response,” Mercer explains. “Your heart rate goes through the roof. Your blood pressure goes through the roof. You’re gasping for breath,” he says.

That push-and-pull may sound hard on the body, and it can be dangerous, particularly if you have underlying heart issues or aren’t prepared for the strain on your system. (If you’re polar plunging for the first time, go with a buddy, ease in slowly, get out of the water within five to 10 minutes and know the warning signs of hypothermia, Hill says.) But stress isn’t always a bad thing, Mercer says. It’s how the body builds resilience. The research on cold-water exposure isn’t perfect, Mercer says; studies tend to be small and poorly controlled, and their designs vary widely in terms of participant characteristics, water temperature, and duration and type of activity. That makes it hard to definitively prove the practice has benefits, or to say whether swimming in cold water is better you than, say, taking an ice bath or a quick plunge.

Nonetheless, some research finds that regular, prolonged immersion in cold water makes the body more resilient. For example, young men who endured daily hour-long baths in 13° to 15° C water for seven days got a physiological boost at the end of the trial, researchers reported in 2024 in Advanced Biology. Specifically, their cells did a better job of clearing out old or damaged parts, a process thought to help prevent various diseases and maintain overall cellular function.

Other research suggests regular cold-water immersion may activate the immune system, potentially boosting white blood cell counts and plasma concentrations of immune proteins.
