Putin 'very pleased' with Syria ties as Sharaa visits Moscow
Russia is seeking to preserve its economic and military presence in Syria following Assad's fall

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on 28 January that he was “very pleased” to host self-appointed Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa in Moscow and that the growth in economic cooperation between them was “remarkable” and a “great achievement.”
“Dear President, dear colleagues, we are very pleased to see you again in Moscow,” Putin said during his meeting with Sharaa, the former Al-Qaeda commander, at the Kremlin.
“We have also been able to raise the level of economic cooperation, with growth exceeding four percent. This may not be as ambitious as we would like, but it is still a great achievement, and we must certainly maintain this outstanding trend,” the Russian president explained.
“Now, in light of the new reality, and thanks to your efforts, and especially your efforts, relations between Syria and Russia are developing.”
Russia had supported the government of former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad in Damascus during the 14-year covert war waged against the country by the US, Israel, and their regional allies.
The effort was successful when Sharaa's Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) toppled Assad and took power in Damascus in December 2024.
Though Sharaa's extremist-dominated security forces committed major massacres against Syria's minority Alawite and Druze populations, the US and Europe have warmly welcomed Sharaa into the international community.
Russia has followed suit, in part to avoid losing its naval and air bases on Syria's coast, its lucrative contracts for rebuilding the country, and to ensure the Damascus government continues to make payments on debts to Russian creditors.
Before Sharaa's arrival, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said “the presence of our soldiers in Syria” would be discussed.
Sharaa first visited Moscow in October of last year. “Since the last visit to Moscow, various committees have been working in different areas to develop relations between the two countries,” Putin added.
“I know that there is a lot that needs to be rebuilt in Syria. And we have economic contractors, including those working in the construction sector, who are fully prepared for this joint effort,” the Russian president affirmed.
Putin also expressed his support for the Syrian government's recent conquest of territory held by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in northeast Syria since 2019.
“We have been closely following your efforts to restore the territorial integrity of Syria. I would like to congratulate you on the momentum this process is gaining. We have always called for the restoration of the territorial integrity of Syria, as you know, and we support all your efforts in this direction,” he stated.
Sharaa's forces took control of Kurdish neighborhoods in Aleppo, as well as the Arab-majority eastern countryside of Aleppo, Raqqa, and Deir Ezzor.
“I hope that the integration of the Euphrates region will be a decisive step in this direction, which would contribute to restoring the unity of Syrian territory as a whole.”
Russian forces based in the Qamishli airport in northeast Syria recently transferred to bases on the Syrian coast.
Earlier today, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said during a press conference that “Relations with the Syrian Arab Republic are witnessing remarkable development.”
Before traveling to Moscow, Sharaa spoke by phone with US President Donald Trump, who said he is “very happy” with developments in Syria following the assault on the SDF, which the US had formerly backed.
“I had a great conversation with the highly respected president of Syria, and all of the things having to do with Syria and that area,” Trump told reporters.
“It's working out very well, so we're very happy about it,” the US president added.
A statement from the Syrian presidency said that Sharaa had emphasized to Trump “Syria's full commitment to its territorial integrity and its national sovereignty and the state's keenness to preserve its institutions and promote civil peace.”
Before becoming the president of Syria, Sharaa was a commander in Al-Qaeda in Iraq, which was notorious for slaughtering civilians using suicide and car bombs.
After his detention in the US prison in Bucca, southern Iraq, Sharaa was dispatched by Islamic State (later ISIS) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi to establish a wing of his group in Syria.
With covert assistance from the US, Israel, Turkiye, and Qatar, Sharaa conquered large swathes of Syria, including Idlib governorate in the northwest of the country, in 2015.
In November 2024, Sharaa's forces launched a lightning offensive, taking control of Damascus just two weeks later as part of an agreement with the US, Israel, Turkiye, and Russia.
