It took Trump, however, to plunge us into a looking-glass war, where we are forced to see ourselves starkly and to take a stand. W. B. Yeats's warning from the early 20th century applies to our own times when he wrote, "Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, the blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere the ceremony of innocence is drowned; The best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity." Yeats faced the horrors of world war and rising totalitarianism, and we live in a different era. But Trumpism touts wrong as right with passionate intensity, while countless people who should see him for what he is lack all conviction to counter him.

The looking-glass war is a contest taking place in collective consciousness. According to a fact-based view of reality, the U.S. is not in imminent danger from terrorism on a mass scale; we are a prosperous, growing economy; our military strength far surpasses any other nation; immigrants are a positive force in our pluralistic society, not a gang of criminals and freeloaders. But facts aren't the same as consciousness, and the wrong-is-right strategy that the Republicans have fostered for decades is rising to claim what is due to it. Because they owe their political survival to the very values that Trumpism expresses in exaggerated form, few Republicans are safe enough, or courageous enough, to speak out against him, and the prospect that this grotesque caricature of a candidate may actually win the Presidency has actually had the opposite effect. It has made estranged Republicans "come home," as they say, which means the embrace of shameless, shameful values as if they are acceptable. Sadly, 95% of Trump supporters are eager to vote for him, as opposed to 80% of Hillary supporters.

US news anchor Savannah Guthrie has posted a video message tearfully pleading for the return of her abducted mother and seeking proof from her captors that the 84-year-old is still alive.

"We want to hear from you and we are ready to listen," the NBC host said, beside her siblings in the clip posted to Instagram. "Please reach out to us."

Nancy Guthrie went missing in the middle of the night from her home in the US state of Arizona over the weekend.

Authorities said they suspect she was kidnapped and they are working with the FBI to authenticate a possible ransom note.

This week, Dominican authorities reported finding the bodies of at least four women near the Dominican-Haitian border. All four had been deported by the U.S. government from Puerto Rico to Haiti.
Haiti continues to be plagued by unprecedented gang violence following the assassination of its president and the collapse of its government. Women and girls there face a growing risk of gender-based violence, with many living in displacement camps. This has been happening to women in Haiti for years, the victim in this photo Anise Boisrond was decapitated and dismembered in November 2020 at the beginning of the most recent destabilization.
The Dominican government has refused to accept Haitian refugees, stating that the United Nations and the international community have failed to help cover the cost of their care.
Similarly, the United States has stopped accepting Haitian refugees and has attempted to deport those living here legally. This week, a federal judge blocked the Trump administration from ending the Temporary Protected Status program for 350,000 Haitians living in the U.S.
Judge Ana Reyes said the government hadn’t even attempted to determine whether these Haitian nationals could safely return to their country.

Ravenlocke ... I agree that the dollar is under threat, for all the reasons included in your post Trump is never going to tell the truth about that ... just the opposite, so I guess someone was trolling him by posting that fake post!

Not the end of the world if currency collapses, and interest rates soar. Throughout history, distant and recent, this has happened to countries and people endure and countries rally and sometimes get on a good track for financial stability and growth. The Trump administration is trying to fight and bully and steal the way out of a financial crisis. Remember, Trump is used to bankruptcy, so at worst he will take the country through such a process (no money, so can't pay debt, so just erase it).
