I learned the following today while watching the British property show Escape to the Country

    Avalon
Quote Avalon (/ˈævəlɒn/; Latin: Insula Avallonis; Welsh: Ynys Afallon, Ynys Afallach; Cornish: Enys Avalow; literally meaning "the isle of fruit [or apple] trees"; sometimes written Avallon or Avilion) is a mythical island featured in the Arthurian legend that first appeared in Geoffrey of Monmouth's influential 1136 Historia Regum Britanniae as a place of magic where King Arthur's sword Excalibur was made and later where Arthur was taken to recover from being gravely wounded at the Battle of Camlann. Since then, the island has become a symbol of Arthurian mythology, similar to Arthur's castle of Camelot.

The name is generally considered to be of Welsh origin (a Cornish or Breton origin is also possible), from Old Welsh, Old Cornish, or Old Breton aball or avallen(n), "apple tree, fruit tree" (cf. Welsh afal, from Proto-Celtic *abalnā, literally "fruit-bearing (thing)").[1][2][3][4][5]

Not only is there a Project Avalon forum, but there is also a Mists of Avalon forum. They seem have an interest in some of the same topics.

It's an offshoot of the original Project Avalon forum, and sprung up as a result of some of the Thuban stuff many years back. Carol and Mudra, who are the most active posters there now, were relatively prominent on the old Avalon forums. I still check in there on occasion as well.

Avallon, a very old city in Burgundy.

Gaulish first (and maybe older,) and gallo-roman after.

Avallon gets its name from the Gallic "Aballo" (apple) which becomes in the 10th century "Avallonem Castrum". Dominating several valleys, the city played an important military role for several centuries. The first fortifications of this rocky outcrop date from the 9th and 10th centuries.

The Avalon Explosion and the power of 'maybe'

This Fossil Friday features the 569-556-million-year-old frond-like fossil Charnia from Charnwood Forest in Leicestershire (UK), an example of the abrupt appearance of the so-called Ediacaran biota in the latest Precambrian.

During this event, which has been called the Avalon Explosion (see Bechly 2024) and preceded the famous Cambrian Explosion, we find in three distinct assemblages the emergence of strange organisms that looked like aliens from a remote planet.( like Forum members...)

They were very much unlike any of the organisms that roamed our planet after the Cambrian Explosion and certainly did not represent the ancestors of the Cambrian bilaterian animal phyla. The Ediacaran organisms generally exhibited a quilted body like an air mattress, a glide symmetry, a fractal growth pattern, and lacked any visible organs for feeding or locomotion or any internal structure. A genuine enigma for biologists and paleontologists.

    "Passengers"

A SciFi movie - with a romantic twist - from 2016. I am sure many have seen it. The starship that brings 5000+ people to another planet is 120 years underway.

The name of the starship is the "Avalon". There is an interesting question that can be asked here. However, if you did not - yet - watch the movie, then I would suggest to first watching it and thèn coming back here to give your "choice" and explain "why" that choice.

The question: what choice would you make in Jim's place. And why?

    Looking forward to your replies.
