India seizes Iran-linked tankers as maritime crackdown follows US trade deal

India has seized three US-sanctioned oil tankers allegedly linked to Iran and intensified surveillance across its maritime zone to curb 'illicit' oil trade, according to Reuters. The move confirms an earlier post by Indian authorities on X, later deleted, stating that three vessels were intercepted roughly 100 nautical miles west of Mumbai after so-called suspicious activity was detected in India’s exclusive economic zone. The ships were escorted to Mumbai for further investigation.

According to Reuters, the vessels, identified as Stellar Ruby, Asphalt Star and Al Jafzia, frequently changed identities to evade enforcement by coastal states. The US Office of Foreign Assets Control had previously sanctioned ships with identical IMO numbers under different names. Two of the tankers are reportedly linked to Iran, with Al Jafzia said to have transported Iranian fuel oil to Djibouti in 2025 and Stellar Ruby flagged in Iran. Iranian state media, citing the National Iranian Oil Company, denied any connection between the company and the seized vessels or their cargoes.

The seizures come amid improving relations between Washington and New Delhi, after the US reduced tariffs on Indian goods to 18 percent from 50 percent following India’s agreement to halt Russian oil imports. India has since deployed around 55 ships and up to 12 aircraft for continuous maritime surveillance.
