Do we have anything else about Danny on PA?

Follow-up: It seems that Danny is a bit of an enigma. If interested, here's a link to a fuller and newer video which goes into more detail, both about Danny and also the Fourth Dimension

His name is Danny Mullen, (I believe) unconnected with a YouTube prankster of the same name. As best I can see, we've not had any posts about him on Avalon before.

This 4-minute video posted by Bluegreen on his thread definitely belongs here. It's concise, fun, well-done, and (even as a mathematician!) contains one nugget I didn't know before: that the plus sign ('+') is a derivative of the Latin 'et', meaning 'and'. (Who knew? Not me.)

Where Do Math Symbols Come From?

Math is full of symbols: lines, dots, arrows, English letters, Greek letters, superscripts, subscripts ... it can look like an illegible jumble. Where did all of these symbols come from? John David Walters shares the origins of mathematical symbols, and illuminates why they’re still so important in the field today.

Russia has released the first image of Earth from its new Elektro-L satellite, launched from Baikonur last month.

The spacecraft has reached geostationary orbit at 36,000 km above the equator, with its multispectral scanner capturing images with a resolution of 1–4 km per pixel.

I think this belongs on this thread, though it's a rather sobering topic. It's a Nugget of Truth I'd been unaware of, but after a moment of thought I realized it wasn't at all surprising. It's really a comment about how social media has changed our behavior, and (dare I say it!) about modern narcissism, at least to some extent in some cases. Here's a very interesting article which I'll summarize below:

Why Taking Selfies Has Led to Almost 400 Deaths

    • The average age of those killed while taking selfies is 24 years old.
    • Women are more likely to die from falls or animal-related incidents. Men are more frequently involved in vehicle-related deaths.
    • The leading cause of death is falling from height, responsible for half of all cases at 50%, including incidents at waterfalls. Vehicle-related deaths come next, accounting for 28%, many involving trains. Drowning makes up a further 13.5%.
    • Finally, a good-news video. Here's a near miss in China, showing what can happen all too easily. The man fell 40 meters, but was unhurt. Many others have not been so lucky.

The Power of the Human Heart

If you think this short is far-fetched, below is a remarkable story beside it:
"Heart transplant recipient here. It is actually possible to receive memories and feelings from our donors. When I woke up from my surgery, all I could smell were apples and I kept asking my nurses for apples. They told my parents who were surprised because before I was sick, I actually could not eat raw apples as they made me incredibly nauseated. I also kept having dreams about playing with a little girl with long black hair. 2 years after my transplant surgery, I reached out to the donor family. My donors mother messaged me the day she got my card and in the message told me that I might find myself liking apples if I didn't already because her daughter loved them and ate several every day. Chills ran through me when I read that. That following summer, my son and I took a trip to meet her and the rest of her family. To my surprise, my donor had a younger sister with long black hair. So yes, the heart can retain memories".

Yes, an impressively neat job. Thanks for posting, grapevine.

Some of the AI videos are helpful for learning and skill-building as is the case with yours. I think it comes down to quality and relevance. I especially enjoy the heart expansion vids, such as people helping people, animals or nature... all reminders of what’s important.

South African innovator finds low-cost solution for potholes

"Millions of South African drivers navigate roads riddled with potholes, damaging vehicles and disrupting trade. A local motorist has developed a fast, affordable solution that is being tested in three Johannesburg municipalities and attracting interest from other African countries."

This would seem to be a great idea for all countries to adopt. Some of the main roads in London are a disgrace.
