Saturday, March 7-12 - Venus dances with Saturn



With each passing day during the first week of March, the brilliant planet Venus will be swinging away from the sun and climbing higher above the western horizon after sunset. Meanwhile, Saturn will be dropping sunward. The two planets will share the field of view of binoculars (orange circle) from Tuesday, March 3, to Thursday, March 12. On Saturday, March 7 and on the following evening, the two planets will be close enough to share the field of view in a backyard telescope (green circle).


Sunday, March 8 - Daylight Saving Time begins (at 2 a.m.)



For jurisdictions (some will drop it altogether) that adopt Daylight Saving Time (DST), clocks should be set forward by one hour at 2 a.m. local time on Sunday, March 8. For stargazers, the time change and the fact that sunsets occur 1 minute later each day near the March equinox, will mean that dark-sky observing cannot commence until much later in the evening — possibly after the bedtime of junior astronomers.

The difference from local time to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and the astronomers' Universal Time (UT) decreases by one hour when DST is in effect. Daylight Saving Time will end on Nov. 1, 2026.

In the southern sky on Tuesday morning, March 10, sky-watchers can see the bright, waning gibbous moon shining a thumb's width to the lower right (or celestial southwest) of Antares, the bright, reddish star that marks the heart of the Scorpion. The duo will be cozy enough to share the view in binoculars (orange circle) and backyard telescopes. The moon will be sitting rather low in the sky since it will be travelling at the southerly range of its tilted orbit, more than 6 degrees south of the ecliptic (green line).

NASA's DART Test Proved It Can Shift An Asteroid's Solar Orbit





Four years ago, NASA purposely smashed a spacecraft into a small asteroid to see if they could deflect it—a test to prove humanity could protect Earth from threatening space rocks.

The experiment pushed the moonlet asteroid Dimorphos into a smaller, faster route around its sibling Didymos—and according to new research out Friday, it also pushed the pair into a slightly different orbit around the sun.

The test on Dimorphos was never based on any actual threat to our planet. But the successful experiment and additional analysis offers a solid data point to mount a defense if any such eventual threat is detected, researchers said.

"This study marks a notable step forward in our ability to prevent future asteroid impacts on Earth," the team of international researchers wrote in their new paper published in the journal Science Advances.

Their observations detailed in the paper showed that the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) in 2022 marked "the first time a human-made object has measurably altered the path of a celestial body around the sun," NASA said in a statement.

Rahil Makadia, the study's lead author, told AFP his team tracked stellar occultations—the moment when an asteroid passes in front of a star, causing a brief dimming for less than a second—to obtain hyper-precise measurements of the asteroid's position, speed and shape.

"The team's amazingly precise measurement again validates kinetic impact as a technique for defending Earth against asteroid hazards and shows how a binary asteroid might be deflected by impacting just one member of the pair," said Thomas Statler, lead scientist for solar system small bodies at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

Satanists Are Using AI, Exorcists Are Warned

Priests, imams and rabbis will attend an exorcism course in Rome amid fears that paedophiles are using AI to create images of children involved in satanic rites





Exorcists claim they get accustomed to being vomited on, sworn at and having nails spat at them by people possessed by the devil. But experts lining up to teach them new tricks at an exorcism course in Rome say they now face a new threat: AI-fuelled satanism.

“Artificial intelligence is a great power — a force for both good and evil — and can therefore be used for devil worshipping,” said Father Luis Ramirez Almanza, a Mexican priest who runs the annual training course for exorcists.

Speakers who are booked to address the audience at the May event include Father Fortunato Di Noto (pictured), a Sicilian priest who fights satanists who combine their devil-worshipping with paedophilia.





“We believe these groups are using AI to generate images of children involved in satanic rites,” he said. “Using children appeals to them because it’s a form of power being exercised over the innocent.”

David Murgia, who runs Catholic Risk and Insurances Services, a research group which tracks cults, said: “Police tell us satanists are using AI to hide their content online and communicate with each other.”

Father Ramirez said another speaker, Beatrice Ugolini, an academic, will discuss how occult groups in Italy — thought to total 263(!) — are using AI to generate the symbols they use in their rites.

This year the group will include Catholic exorcists as well as rabbis, imams and evangelical preachers interested in fighting the devil.

Ramirez was joined on Tuesday by a woman who spoke about her possession by the devil which made her speak in Arabic, a language she had never learnt. Exorcists say the possessed more often acquire the ability to speak Latin, Hebrew or Aramaic, as well as gaining physical strength and revulsion at the sight of the cross.

Artificial intelligence has long been considered by some as the devil itself, including Elon Musk, who likened it in 2014 to a demon being summoned with no plans to control it.

Bizarre New Insect Discovered in South America Stuns Scientists





In the canopies of a South American rainforest, a tiny soldier termite has stunned a team of international scientists with its whale-like features.

Cryptotermes mobydicki, the name given to the termite by the international research team — led by a University of Florida scientist — boasts features of an elongated head and hidden mandibles. It resembles the iconic sperm whale from Herman Melville’s classic novel — hence its name.

“This termite is unlike anything we’ve ever seen,” said Rudolf Scheffrahn, professor of entomology at the UF Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS).

The specimen was so distinctive that the team of international entomologists thought it was looking at specimens of an entirely new genus, said Scheffrahn, whose taxonomic research is based at the UF/IFAS Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center.





“The lateral view of the soldier’s frontal prominence and elongated head resembles the head of a sperm whale, and in both organisms, the mandibles are eclipsed by the head,” he said. “The whale’s eye and soldier’s antennal socket are comparatively positioned. After I noticed the resemblance to a sperm whale, my coauthors thought the name to be appropriate and whimsical, much like ‘ghost orchid’ or ‘Dumbo octopus.’”

The discovery adds a 16th species to the South American roster of Cryptotermes termites. A genetic family tree analysis shows that Cryptotermes mobydicki is closely related to other neotropical species found in Colombia, Trinidad, and the Dominican Republic, giving scientists a new clue into the evolutionary story of this globally distributed genus.

After UFO Expert Disappearance, Police Ask New Mexico Residents For Home Footage

William Neil McCasland, a 68-year-old retired Air Force general and UFO expert, went missing from his New Mexico home on February 27 and hasn’t been seen since. Now, the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office has asked more than 600 residents in the neighborhood near McCasland’s home to hand over any security camera footage they have that may aid in finding the missing general.

The request from law enforcement is an escalation of the search, which has been ongoing for nearly two weeks. Last week, the FBI issued a call for any information that may help in its investigation, including video footage that may have incidentally captured McCasland’s location.

“We are asking for your help in finding him. We believe there are people who have information valuable to locating Neil who have not yet spoken to law enforcement. This could include people who have been in the Sandia mountains and may have seen Neil or captured him on a GoPro or other recording device, specifically on Friday, February 27 or Saturday, February 28,” the agency wrote.

McCasland’s unexplained disappearance is concerning for all of the normal reasons that it is worrisome when an elderly person goes missing—the initial report of the general’s unknown whereabouts led to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office issuing a Silver Alert. But this case is particularly notable given McCasland’s background. The retired veteran previously served as the commander of the Air Force Research Laboratory and was believed to have been involved in the investigation of UFO activity during his service.





According to McCasland’s biography on the Air Force’s website, he was in charge of “managing the Air Force’s $2.2 billion science and technology program.” He primarily spent his time at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, which was the headquarters of Project Blue Book, the military branch’s probe into UFOs.

That has made him a particular person of interest in the UFO community. Ross Coulthart, a UFO investigative journalist who has been a major public advocate for disclosure of information about UFOs, called McCasland’s disappearance “an issue of grave concern, and possibly of national security,” according to Newsweek. On a podcast, Coulthart raised the possibility of “foul play,” calling McCasland a potential target for geopolitical foes like Russia and China.

McCasland has been a figure of curiosity for the UFO-obsessed for some time now.

His name came up in the emails of former White House chief of staff John Podesta, who served former President Bill Clinton. McCasland was mentioned in messages between Podesta and Blink-182 guitarist Tom DeLonge, who is a bit of a UFO enthusiast. In the emails, DeLonge mentioned to Podesta that McCasland was in charge of the laboratory at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, where remains of a supposed UFO crash in Roswell, New Mexico were sent to. “He not only knows what I’m trying to achieve, he helped assemble my advisory team. He’s a very important man,” DeLonge wrote of McCasland.

COMET VS STARLINK

Last month, astronomer Gerald Rhemann attempted to photograph Comet Wierzchoś (C/2024 E1) during its closest approach to Earth. The comet was outnumbered 10:1 by satellites.

“The video is made from 19 files, each one was exposed for 120 seconds," says Rhemann. "During that time approximately 10 ±1 satellites criss-crossed the field of view. (The uncertainly is because two of the streaks are very faint.) Most if not all were Starlinks.

Much can be seen in this busy image.

"The dynamic of the comets ion tail is visible, and the comet is moving along the Sculptor dwarf galaxy, Rehman notes. "Nevertheless, satellite interference is a growing challenge."

It's about to worsen. Right now, Earth is surrounded by almost 10,000 Starlinks with future plans calling for 42,000. Amazon’s Project Kuiper has begun launching its own planned 3,200-satellite broadband fleet, while China is building two more megaconstellations: Guowang (13,000 satellites) and "Qianfan" ("Thousand Sails", 15,000-plus). Together, they could eventually rival Starlink or even surpass it.

Can’t recall the author, but in a paperback about Hong Kong related spy crafting in the 60’s, he brooked info about then truth serums. Said they worked, but that they sometimes melted the subject’s mind/brain.

Am guessing that the gentleman was abducted, and that technical truth-extractors are more effective and probably more undetectable now. Might have gone beyond chemicals, too.
