I received a classified briefing from the administration. It is categorically false that they did not plan for Iran closing the Strait of Hormuz.

Yes - the U.S. knew this would happen, and immediately responded by:

1. offering alternative insurance and naval protection to oil tankers passing through the Strait, after Lloyd's of London canceled insurance,
2. and gaving India an exemption from embargoes on Russian oil, so that India can get oil from Russia,
3. while somehow Chinese bound traffic continues through the Straits with little risk, and
4. Russia is considering ceasing petroleum shipments (such as haven't already been blocked by the would be recipients) to the European Union.

Apparently, Russia, India, China, and the U.S. are working this problem together, and the British and European Union are the odd one's out.

The U.S. knew, and prepared not just for Iran's actions but also Lloyd's actions, and showed who is on who's side, in this new world order. After spiking briefly above $120 per barrel, the price of oil is back down to around $100 per barrel, as I make this post. That's up some, but not up the dramatic amount that a full scale, longer term, shutdown would cause.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced Saturday that it launched a new wave of missiles against Israeli targets as part of Operation “True Promise 4,” carried out in coordination with the Lebanese movement Hezbollah.

In a statement, the IRGC said the 48th wave of rocket attacks targeted Israeli sites in the north of the occupied territories, specifically in Galilee, the Golan Heights, and the city of Haifa.

The Iranian military body reported that the operation used Khaibar-Shakan and Qadr missiles along with attack drones. The IRGC described the mission as successful.

The statement also said Iranian air defense systems have tracked and destroyed 112 drones of different types since the beginning of the war against Iran, including combat, reconnaissance and suicide drones.

And a very trivial personal addendum: I've been there, to that very place, several times, back in the early 2000s. It's not only a port, but a tourist spot with several exclusive hotels, where I ran a bunch of management training courses for UAE companies and in my spare time went scuba diving in the (very warm!) Persian Gulf. Like every part of the UAE, it was a very nice place to hang out.

The coastline, with impeccable tourist beaches, looks like this. (I've been to that very island.) It takes a couple of hours from Dubai to cross the desert on a 4-lane highway to get there.



(I've also spent time in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Bahrain, but not to Qatar or Saudi. And separately, as one or two members might know or remember, back in 2010 I was privileged to spend several weeks as the personal guest of a member of the Abu Dhabi Royal Family, who was a strong Project Camelot supporter. )
