Default Good Friday news, happenings, etc

On Good Friday, the whole Church joins in mourning and penance to commemorate the Passion and Death of our lord Jesus Christ.

Also on Good Friday many processions take place around the world. It is always amazing to see so many devoters come together on such a special occasion.

I am posting some here as well as any pertinent news about this special holy day that occurs once a year.

For the first time in 58 years, San Sebastián held a Good Friday procession. I estimated about 400 penitents took part and about 20,000 people turned out to watch (10 percent of the population). Yes, I know it’s not like in Seville or Malaga, but it’s still a miracle.

The Communion Procession with the Pre-Sanctified, during the Solemn Liturgy on Good Friday, from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, the very place where Our Lord Jesus Christ was crucified, died and rose again.

    The Scala Sancta

    THE HOLY STEPS

The Scala Sancta are holy because they are said to be the stairs that Jesus climbed on his way to his trial before Pontius Pilate (or the events that are also known as the Passion of Christ).

The stairs were brought to Rome by Saint Helena in the 4th century.

Today, the 28 steps are owned by the Vatican and free to be visited. They are covered in wood to protect the marble.

The holy stairs are a major point of pilgrimage for many in the Christian faith.

And the 28 stairs can only be climbed on your knees.

Climbing the holy stairs is an act of devotion. One that is performed with such silence and focus. Many people will also stop and kiss points on the steps where glass reveals what is said to be drops of Christ’s blood.

    ☩ 𝕁𝕄𝕋 ☩
    Commentary account
On what we now call Good Friday, an extraordinary event took place in Jerusalem. According to the Gospels, Jesus was crucified at the third hour (around 9 a.m.) and died at the ninth hour, about 3 p.m.

At that exact moment, darkness fell across the land. Jesus cried out, “It is finished,” and gave up His spirit. The curtain in the Temple tore in two from top to bottom, the earth shook, and history was changed forever.

But why 3 p.m. specifically? It was far from random. This timing aligned perfectly with God’s ancient plan for the Passover.

Here’s the biblical timeline of the crucifixion:

✅ 9 a.m. (third hour): Jesus is nailed to the cross (Mark 15:25).
✅ Noon to 3 p.m. (sixth to ninth hour): Darkness covers the whole land (Matthew 27:45; Mark 15:33; Luke 23:44).
    ✅ 3 p.m. (ninth hour): Jesus dies (Matthew 27:46-50; Mark 15:34-37).

The ninth hour held profound meaning because it was precisely when the Passover lambs were sacrificed in the Temple....

⚡In the first century, Jewish custom and historical accounts confirm that the Passover lambs were slaughtered in the Temple courts on the afternoon of Nisan 14, the day of preparation.

⚡The Mishnah describes the slaughter beginning after the daily afternoon sacrifice, in the mid-afternoon. The Jewish historian Flavius Josephus notes that during Passover, the lambs were killed “from the ninth hour till the eleventh”, roughly 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

⚡Thousands of lambs were sacrificed in that short window as families prepared for the Passover meal that evening. Each lamb symbolized deliverance, just as the blood of the lamb had protected the Israelites from death in the original Exodus.

⚡At the very moment the priests began slaughtering those symbolic lambs, Jesus, the true Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, breathed His last breath on the cross.

This was no coincidence. It was divine perfection. Jesus fulfilled the Passover completely. His blood, like the lamb’s blood on the doorposts, now shields believers from eternal judgment. His death at 3 p.m. was the ultimate, once-for-all sacrifice that brought an end to the need for animal offerings.

Even today, many Christians stop at 3 p.m. to pray, remembering it as the Hour of Divine Mercy, the hour when the Lamb of God died so that we could live.
God’s timing has always been flawless. From the shadow of the Passover in Egypt to its fulfillment at Calvary, every detail points to Jesus.

He died at 3 o’clock so that death would pass over us forever

From a mother's perspective, watching your own son whipped, humiliated, spit upon, and then nailed to a tree would be like putting your heart through a grinder.

The Blessed Virgin Mary experienced all of that on Good Friday. She is the Mother of Sorrows. She is able to comfort us in our sorrow because she her herself knew sorrow.

A handful of Franciscan friars and the Custos of the Holy Land perform a procession marking Good Friday along the Via Dolorosa (Path of Sorrow) in Jerusalem’s Old City, the route Christians believe Jesus walked while carrying his cross before being crucified.

Holy sites in the occupied Old City of east Jerusalem have remained closed since the outbreak of the US-'Israeli' war on February 28, forcing Easter celebrations to take place in a very limited fashion

How unjust and unholy to subject innocent young lambs to slaughter for a full two hours, especially when there is already so much suffering in the world. I know this was a past ritual (am I correct in assuming this?) I can barely fathom the extent of fear, bloodshed, and sheer violence involved in this process. Jesus would never support such a brutal practice.

Aside from that, I respect Catholics peacefully gathering to commemorate this sacred time, Easter, and the turning of the wheel...

I went on a similar march in a neighboring town yesterday (Good Friday), a huge multi-Church turnout. It wasn't to morn though, it was in awe of the suffering Jesus took for all the sins of the world. In the Bible story the disciples and everyone couldn't understand how the real Messiah could be tortured and humiliated like that. They were like 'What a loser, no way he's the Messiah lol'. Later Jesus came back and gave all of humanity the Holy Spirit, like Sampson had but for everyone. Hundreds of people saw him return. 11 of the 12 disciples suffered gruesome deaths because the wouldn't deny what they saw. John escaped because he still had to write Revelation.

The Passover ritual is a Jewish tradition to celebrate the Exodus of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt.

From Wikipedia the explanation on the slaughter of the lamb to save the Israelites’s firstborn from the tenth plague.

“According to the Book of Exodus, God commanded Moses to tell the Israelites to slaughter a lamb and mark their doorframes with its blood, in addition to instructions for consuming the lamb that night. For that night, God would bring about the tenth plague, in which God would smite all the firstborn in Egypt”.

Christians which includes catholics do not practice Passover, because it is not part of the Christian church traditions and not a part of Jesus’s teachings.

Was Jesus in Jerusalem during the Passover time, Yes and many people assume that the Last Supper may have consisted of unleavened bread and maybe lamb no one knows for sure. A reference to the last supper can be found in the Gospel of Mark 14:12..

Good Friday represents the day that Jesus died on the cross for our salvation, and not about the Passover slaughter of lambs.

🇵🇱 In Warsaw, the Papal Cross caught fire right during a religious service.

The incident occurred on Good Friday. According to preliminary information, the cause could have been numerous candles.

This cross has historical significance - it was here in 1979 that the Pope held a mass and said: "Let your Spirit descend and renew the face of the earth, this earth".

    A bad omen. For Poland.
