🇧🇫🇨🇺Burkina Faso-Republic of Cuba Cooperation: 50 years of active relations brought about by deep ties of friendship and solidarity

    Ouagadougou, December 31, 2025

Burkina Faso and the Republic of Cuba celebrated on the evening of Tuesday, December 30, 2025, the fiftieth anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations.

Hand in hand, the Ministry in charge of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of the Republic of Cuba in Burkina Faso, organized a solemn ceremony to mark the golden jubilee of exemplary cooperation, and singular relations between the two nations.

Burkina Faso and the Republic of Cuba are half a century of dynamic partnership, built around the vision and commitment of the revolutionary struggle leaders, Presidents Thomas SANKARA and Fidel CASTRO.

A friendship developed in a historical context marked by similar struggles for dignity, independence and social progress.

At this commemorative ceremony, the Burkinabe Chief of Diplomacy SEM Karamoko Jean Marie TRAORE, magnified an exemplary course made of common combat for the Burkinabe and Cuban peoples.

"It's five decades of shared journeys and struggles, of fighting against the oppressor, of fighting for sovereignty and dignity," the minister said.

SEM Karamoko Jean Marie TRAORE further argues that this struggle has a new momentum, through the new vision driven by the current leaders of our two nations.

"Today we continue this fight through the Progressive Popular Revolution that has resumed the torch to free the country from the chains that confine it to keep it at its lowest," he claims.

The minister also recalled Burkina Faso’s unwavering support for the Republic of Cuba in its constant struggle against blockade and domination.

"A people who are standing and fighting, it inspires us and reminds us that the struggle we are fighting is a struggle worth all the sacrifices," he said.

The Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to Burkina Faso, H.E. Madam Enith Pérez RETURETA expressed her full honor to celebrate 50 years of deep friendship, solidarity and fruitful cooperation between her country and Burkina Fazo.

The Cuban diplomat also recalled the common path, the ideological fight and the values shared by the leaders and the Cuban and Burkinabe people.

“Our people have gone through historical challenges that have taught us to rise up, to fight for independence and sovereignty, and to build together a future of dignity and hope,” she said.

She reaffirmed her country’s commitment to continue
strengthen this deep friendship with Burkina Faso, to build together a future of peace, justice and strengthened cooperation.

    This commemoration fiftieth anniversary was
    Punched by presentations, testimonies, and
film projection, to illustrate the many acquired and present the perspectives of the
Cooperation between Burkina Faso and the Republic of Cuba, in areas such as health, education, higher education, human resources training, climate change, etc.

Beyond implemented projects and programmes, the relations between Burkina Faso and the Republic of Cuba are characterized by a political and ideological closeness, based on defending the interests of their people on the international stage and promoting South-South cooperation.

It should be noted that this commemorative ceremony began with the deposit of a flower garb and the collection at the Thomas SANKARA Memorial.

🇧🇫We will create a system whereby internally displaced people do not rely on aid, but can provide for themselves.

We will built great hospital facilities that will not only benefit Burkinabe but our African neighbours.

We are building more schools and universities in 2026.

🇧🇫During the year 2025 we set up 4 regional road construction brigade, and in 2026 we will set up 4 more.

🇧🇫The imperialist planned do a Venezuelan part 2 in Burkina Faso yesterday. This was organised by the previous failed leader Paul-Henri Damiba and his imperialists master.

The plan was similar to the one they executed under Sankara, to kill all the inner circle of Ibrahim Traore.

Needless to say the plans failed miserably. The Burkinabe people were having none of it, and the potters were all arrested.

Burkina Faso has gone all in with the construction of a 332km 8-lane dual-carriageway which will connect cities of Ouagadougou -Bobo-Dioulasso. All the $357 million funds will come from the state not a single coin will be borrowed.

Just like any other projects, Burkina Faso has maintained Ibrahim Traore's policy of purchasing their own equipment and empowering the citizens (engineers) in this project as well. It's 100% Burkinabè work.

🇧🇫BurkinaFaso: Burkina Faso's legislative assembly lawmakers vote unanimously for the dissolution of political parties.

The Transitional Legislative Assembly voted unanimously, this Monday, February 9, in favor of the bill repeal of law n*032-2001/AN of November 29, 2001 chartering political parties and formations in Burkina Faso.

This decision follows the adoption, on January 29, 2026, of a draft bill in the Council of Ministers, on the dissolution of political parties, as part of a process of restructuring the state.

The goal of this change is to strengthen national unity and put an end to divisions. The 69 deputies present all approved this measure.

🇧🇫 British media finally got to Burkina Faso, and the answers weren't what they were looking for.

Ibrahim Traore, president and leader of the revolution, sat down with Sky News. The journalist came loaded with gotcha questions. He had no problem answering them.

    On Russian support he said:

"Indeed, Russian President Vladimir Putin wanted to provide us with all the necessary resources to fight terrorism, including military personnel. But I have always said: we are Burkina Faso. No one will come to fight for us, and that is a non-negotiable principle."

HUMAN RIGHTS PROMOTION: Captain Ibrahim TRAORÉ “Humanizes” the Baporo Penitentiary Center

(Baporo, April 22, 2026). In the contemporary history of Burkina Faso, this is a first. In Africa and the rest of the world, it is an extremely rare act, according to the penitentiary administration. A sitting Head of State visiting a prison. Captain Ibrahim TRAORÉ did just that on April 22, 2026. En route to Bobo-Dioulasso as part of the 22nd edition of the National Culture Week (SNC), the President of Faso, Head of State, His Excellency Captain Ibrahim TRAORÉ made a stop at the Baporo Agricultural Penitentiary Center (CPAB) in the Sanguié province, Nando region.

It is an open-regime prison where inmates engage in agricultural and pastoral production activities.

At the start of the visit, a 40-hectare corn field operated by the inmates during the dry season was presented to the Head of State, who seized the opportunity to outline his vision for the prison system: “The prison must be humane. We are a society; we are not barbarians, we are not violent. We are an African society, and in Africa, respect for the human person is something intimately linked to us. So, no matter the situation a person finds themselves in, they must have a minimum of respect,” emphasized the Head of State.

According to the President of Faso, the introduction of Community Service Sentences (TIG) aligns with the vision of enabling inmates to work for the Nation, train, and learn a trade. “We do not want our prisons to resemble those of the imperialists. We have decided to humanize our prisons (…) and we will reduce the number of our prisons and concentrate them in production areas like this one,” stated Captain Ibrahim TRAORÉ.

The Head of State urged the inmates to stay motivated and to learn. “The Ministry in charge of Justice will support you so that you become model citizens of tomorrow,” reassured the Head of State.

A Modern R+1 Building for CPAB Inmates

In Baporo, the humanization of prisons in line with the Head of State’s vision is already taking shape with the construction of an R+1 building. According to Justice Minister Rodrigue Edasso BAYALA, the building, costing approximately 500 million FCFA, includes all amenities to preserve human dignity in detention. With a capacity of 500 places, this facility will increase the center’s hosting capacity and significantly improve detention conditions for better inmate productivity.

“We say thank you to the Comrade President of Faso for all his benefits to our country. We also thank him for adopting the TIG law, which allows us to work, stay healthy, and reduce our sentences. It is a great favor for us inmates,” acknowledged the representative of the CPAB inmates.

As an agricultural vocational penitentiary center, the CPAB produced 240 tons in 2025, and for 2026, the center aims to cultivate over 300 hectares for an expected production of 782.5 tons.

This stopover will be etched in golden letters in the memory of the inmates and staff of this open-air detention center, established in 1986 under the leadership of Captain Thomas SANKARA.

Burkina Faso’s government under President Ibrahim Traoré has shut down all laboratories involved in a controversial genetically modified mosquito project, ordering the destruction of remaining samples and halting over a decade of research.

The project, known as Target Malaria, involved releasing gene-edited mosquitoes into the wild to combat malaria. It had been operating in the country since 2012 and had just received regulatory approval from Burkina Faso’s biosafety authorities weeks earlier.

However, the government acted after strong public opposition, stating that the people of Burkina Faso had not consented to their country being used as a testing ground for Western biotechnology experiments.

The modified mosquitoes were being developed in laboratories in the United States, Italy, and the United Kingdom.
