I loved Bill Callahan's music in the 90's. He had a band called (smog), parenthesis added, as if the word itself were in the a fog of smoke, and just talked story in his songs. It was so heartfelt and raw and honest, it resonated while driving those awful freeways of LA in my early 20's. Picture it: stuck in traffic, hot sun blistering neck and arm that hangs out the window because you have no air conditioning, sucking in exhaust from the big rig that sits huffing and puffing before you, no ventilation, no escape, nothing but concrete ugliness, and this song starts playing on the radio...
