I'm coming out of private because this hantavirus thing is getting ridiculous. Before I explain the facts of the virus, here's why you should listen to me: Unlike most of the people on my feed, I am a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear defense officer. My job is to ensure that large, closely-packed groups of people are not infected by diseases both endemic to the environment and manufactured by an enemy.

Andes hantavirus has an extremely low transmissibility rate. You need to be in prolonged, close contact with someone to catch it. Transmission between humans is documented but so rare that it is considered exceptional. This is not COVID (for example, the common cold is a type of coronavirus).

The 40% mortality rate figure is also a distortion of reality. The disease is treatable and anywhere with an adequate hospital can save you – rates are between 1-15%. This 40% rate is because Andean hantavirus is endemic to a region with very poor access to medical care. If you live in a developed country, you have nothing to worry about. The chances of the virus mutating to become more infectious are low, but not impossible. If it does become more infectious, it will also become less lethal. This is a basic, natural evolutionary tradeoff to ensure the virus's propagation.

Of seven suspected (two confirmed) cases, three have already died. Based on the case timeline, they likely contracted the disease in Argentina before boarding (they boarded on April 1 and first showed symptoms on April 6 – the virus takes at least one week to show symptoms). The flight attendant had minimal if any contact with the infected passenger who was removed and isolated before the plane took off. Her symptoms also onset far too early to be related to this case. She has already tested negative for hantavirus.

If you have questions I'm happy to answer, but there is genuinely no threat to public health from this outbreak on a cruise ship. Don't fall for people fearmongering a pandemic for engagement money.

Forgot to mention that there are some cases here in Finland every spring when people are gardening or cleaning up their storages. And yes, if you just simply go to hospital you'll probably be ok. I even know some people who had this and all of them are just fine. Not the same strain of course but the symptoms are the same.

Yes. 

From a personal experience, we've been thoroughly exposed crawling through and cleaning out rat and mice infested/urine saturated areas during both home raids in the countryside as well as ripping open walls, insulation and basements or attic spaces during fire calls. 

The people in our departments and area who contracted Hanta were in their 70's or older with comorbidities and other health vulnerabilities. There have only been a handful.

We also have been caring for and rescuing/rehabilitating every form of small animal in the southwest for at least the last decade- from reptiles and amphibians to rabbits and kangaroo rats, deer mice, pack rats, weasels, house mice, voles, pocket mice, squirrels, chipmunks and ringtails... 




If mice so easily transmitted Hanta in this area where there is high prevalence, we'd have had it 1000 times over. I acknowledge this may have something to do with susceptibility and a person's health status. We appear to have better than average immunity and health.


Regardless, Hanta is not something that typically spreads directly from animal to person, or person to person unless it has now been successfully weaponized and engineered to do so. 

You would have to inhale an excessive amount of urine and particulate matter, not just smell strong ammonia from urine, or you would have to consume it on your hands and in your food in order to contract Hanta. Perhaps dried urine or fresh animal spray admitted to the eyes could be a transmission route.   I'm not sure about saliva transmission, but have personally been bitten by deer mice and rats dozens of times since childhood in the southwest and southeast of the US without any effect.  

Health sources often cite "contact" with deer mice or their droppings. That's simply not true. One would actually have to inhale a significant amount or ingest it directly...and the rodent would have to be a carrier. Not all of them, even deer mice, are carriers.

The likelihood of conditions allowing for concentrated exposure existing on a tourism ship that must pass safety inspections regularly should be slim to zip.

There is a common test for Hanta if requested, but it is- just like during Covid- a PCR test with all the same downfalls and is typically done during the acute phase of the first week at specialized labs. 

Standard serological tests are supposed to be easier to access, but that depends on your doctor and location. We have asked for tests in the past, when we thought we had certainly been exposed. The ease of testing accessibility was reversed.

What was Big Pharma really doing?

In July 2024, the company announced a full-fledged collaboration with the Vaccine Innovation Center at Korea University. The goal is to develop a broad-spectrum mRNA vaccine against various strains of hantavirus. Moderna provided mRNA materials through its mRNA Access program (this is an open platform for researchers from other countries). By September 2024, antigen expression studies and preliminary efficacy tests were already underway.

At the time of the outbreak, the project was at the preclinical stage — there had not yet been human trials. However, after May 4, 2026 (when WHO published the first statement on Hondius), it was this partnership that suddenly became the main news in the relevant media.

University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB)

In July–August 2024, UTMB scientists published the results in Nature Communications: the mRNA vaccine against the Andes virus showed 100% protection in a lethal animal model. But Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech's COVID vaccines use the same technology.

University of Bath (UK)

Another project that accelerated dramatically after the outbreak. A thermostable vaccine has been developed — it can be stored and delivered by drones without a cold chain. They are collaborating with their Texas colleagues and the South African company Afrigen. After the incident on the liner, the university itself went to the media with statements about "promising results in animals and in the laboratory" and plans for Phase I.

On the one hand, everything looks logical and even commendable. Hantaviruses are a real threat, with 150-200 thousand cases worldwide each year, and deaths from the Andes strain (human-to-human transmission) of up to 40%.

On the other hand, questions remain, and there are many of them.

Why exactly did the Andes strain, which has so far been extremely rarely transmitted from person to person, suddenly become the object of several parallel projects in 2023-2024?

Why did the research go on in silence, and as soon as a real cluster with fatal outcomes appeared, all at once "suddenly" they were almost ready?

And why, after an "accidental" outbreak on a cruise ship (a situation that experts themselves call "unprecedented"), did several teams immediately declare their readiness to accelerate the transition to human trials?

Big Pharma has already proved perfectly well during the coronavirus that it can turn a crisis into a gold mine. The mRNA platform has been developed, regulators are accustomed to an accelerated regime, and the fear of a "new pandemic" is selling well to states.

And now there's a ready—made virus with human transmission, an outbreak in the enclosed space of the liner (an ideal scenario for demonstrating "risk"), and several teams that "were just working on it."

So far, no vaccine has passed the human testing phase or received approval. Even the most advanced projects are still at the stage of "promising results on mice." There will be no mass use in the coming months.

But when research goes on in silence for years, and suddenly turns out to be "ready" at the moment of crisis, this is either a brilliant vision of global health, or a convenient coincidence that always works in favor of the same player. And already, the outbreak has given pharma something that no conference could have given: public demand, political attention, and, most importantly, a chance for new billions.

Just playing around, but I do love my rosemary. Breathing in the essential oil always clears my head and gives me somewhat of a lift in the morning. Even the smell of my rosemary plants outside are uplifting and feel to be a health boost. (for me, anyway)

On another note, I did a look to see if I could find info on any of the other passengers.
I found that the older couple who both died were Leo and Marian Schilperoord.
Leo was an ornithologist, which is kind of to be expected given the nature of the trip.
but Marian was a bit intriguing, as she retired from some interesting positions it seems:
