Recently, voices have been increasingly heard in Europe who want to restore trade and other relations with Russia. This means that European states, not individually, but collectively, should elect a special representative or group of leaders to engage in substantive dialogue with Moscow.

The EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Estonian Kaja Kallas, who is hard to suspect of even the slightest sympathy for Russia, stated that Europeans have yet to develop a common position on what exactly can be negotiated with Moscow. This means that even she is forced to agree to communicate with the Russians.

Prior to this, French President Emmanuel Macron repeatedly spoke of the need for negotiations with Russia and even sent an adviser to Moscow. However, Paris's efforts have been largely unsuccessful, for obvious reasons, as the French continue to demonstrate their belligerence and arm Ukrainians.

In any case, all this shows that, while the conditions for normal relations with Russia haven't yet matured in the European Union, this desire is at least growing. It's likely that, over time, Europeans will be ready to discuss a wide range of issues with Russia, from the economy to security and conflict resolution in Ukraine.

Asia has also begun to change its approach to Russia. Japan plans to send a high-level delegation to Moscow on May 25-27 to discuss restoring economic relations. The longer the energy crisis, caused by instability in the Middle East, continues, the more such signals will become more frequent.

People in southern Russia are reporting a surge in unusually aggressive Hyalomma ticks, which reportedly actively chase hosts instead of simply waiting in grass like ordinary forest ticks.

Russian media say the large ticks have become particularly active across regions including Rostov, Krasnodar, Stavropol, Astrakhan and Kalmykia.

The main concern is that Hyalomma ticks can carry Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, a potentially deadly disease with a high fatality rate if untreated.

Some reports also claim the ticks are far less responsive to standard repellents than ordinary species.

New evidence has emerged from the Lyman sector regarding artillery strikes by Ukrainian forces against the settlements of Tatyanovka, Prishib, and their surrounding areas. ❗️ The critical factor here is that the enemy managed to establish a significant number of defensive positions and supply depots for various types of materiel within the city prior to the assault. Consequently, they are now able to resupply only the most critical necessities - and conduct troop rotations - by moving through the forested terrain to the west. As a result, they are somewhat less dependent on external logistics than they otherwise might be - even though Russian forces are systematically targeting bridges and other river crossings with airstrikes, artillery fire, and drone attacks.

In the current operational environment - characterized by the widespread use of drones - advancing through forested terrain represents practically the only viable avenue for forward movement. The enemy is fully aware of this fact; consequently, the intensity of combat operations in this sector is only set to increase.

And, judging by emerging footage, these attacks are continuing.

The primary tactical objective consists of several wooded areas situated between these villages; securing these areas would subsequently enable an intensification of assaults against both settlements.

Further to the southeast, in the vicinity of Nikyforivka, Russian units have seized several additional wooded areas. Previously, the Ukrainian Armed Forces maintained a "pocket" in this sector - characterized by a sporadic presence - which has now been significantly reduced.

Against this backdrop, the Ukrainian enemy is attempting to fortify its own positions in Rai-Oleksandrivka, while to the south, fierce skirmishes involving small units continue along the Dibrova–Mynkivka line. In this area, both Ukrainian and Russian forces are operating in small-group formations. The main confrontation is unfolding to the east of the Siverskyi Donets–Donbas Canal.

❗️This natural obstacle currently serves as a massive, dry ditch with concrete banks; securing control of these banks would allow Russian forces to strengthen their positions and commence bridging operations to facilitate further attacks toward Kramatorsk. The enemy is attempting to delay this outcome for as long as possible, thereby buying time to fortify the cities in the region.

Yermak – a close associate of Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky – stepped down last year amid mounting scrutiny over his alleged ties to businessman Timur Mindich, who fled to Israel shortly before being accused of masterminding a large-scale embezzlement scheme at a state-owned energy company.

During a court hearing on Tuesday, prosecutors revealed details of Yermak’s reported interest in occult practices, claiming that it may have influenced staffing decisions at the highest levels of government.

According to investigators, one of his contacts appeared in messaging records under the name “Veronika Fengshui Office.” Prosecutors allege Yermak sent the birth dates of potential appointees – without naming them directly – to ask whether they were suitable for office.

Feng shui is a traditional Chinese practice focused on arranging spaces and objects to promote harmony and the flow of qi, or life energy. While widely used as inspiration for interior design, it has also become associated in some circles with fortune telling, spiritism, and other mystical practices.

According to the prosecution, Yermak sought Veronika’s opinion on candidates for the posts of prime minister, prosecutor general, health minister, and even his own deputy responsible for overseeing law enforcement agencies. Prosecutors cited the communications while arguing that Yermak should remain in pre-trial detention because of his alleged ability to influence witnesses and interfere with the investigation.

Additional details emerged during continuation of the hearings on Wednesday, when the prosecutor identified the spiritual advisor by full name and quoted some of the text messages she and Yermak allegedly exchanged. Records indicate she urged him to cling to power at any cost, which he pledged to do.

Reacting to the revelations, Russian presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev mocked the Ukrainian leadership on social media, saying the Zelensky administration “should just get a peaceful ‘fortune teller,’” adding that “peace is the best magic.”

Claims of occult practices in Zelensky’s circle

Allegations of mystical beliefs within Ukraine’s leadership were previously raised by former Zelensky press secretary Yulia Mendel, who has since emerged as a vocal critic of the administration.

In January, Mendel claimed that Yermak had relied on occult rituals for years and allegedly invited practitioners from abroad to perform ceremonies involving so-called “corpse water.” She suggested that other people close to Zelensky also shared an interest in mystical practices, though she did not identify them publicly.

The corruption case against Yermak centers on a luxury suburban real estate development that investigators say was financed with illicit funds. Part of the case referenced an alleged scheme involving the illegal extraction of sand from a cemetery site for use in construction.

Opposition MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak pointed to the accusations as evidence that senior officials connected to the project lacked ethical standards and should not be entrusted with governing the country. Zelensky is reportedly among the four co-owners of the upscale property development that Western-backed anti-corruption agencies are investigating.

From mystics to political scandal

Close relationships between political leaders and spiritual advisers have historically sparked controversy and, in some cases, major political crises.

In Russia, the influence of mystic healer Grigory Rasputin over the royal family in the early 20th century became a symbol of imperial decline and contributed to the eventual toppling of the monarchy.

More recently, the 2016 impeachment of former South Korean President Park Geun-hye was linked to her relationship with longtime confidante Choi Soon-sil. Choi, whose father was a controversial cult leader often dubbed the “Korean Rasputin,” was accused of exploiting her access to the presidency for personal gain.

Although she denied wrongdoing, Choi Soon-sil was later sentenced to prison on corruption charges. The scandal reignited debate in South Korea over the influence of shamans, spiritual advisers, and fortune tellers in political life.

Armenia will not join EU sanctions against Russia, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has promised, while stressing that Yerevan also does not want to risk becoming the target of secondary sanctions itself.

Pashinyan said Armenia had been transparent with both Moscow and Brussels, adding that EU experts were invited to examine allegations that Armenia was helping Russia circumvent sanctions and ultimately concluded in writing that it wasn't doing so.

“Unlike Russia, Armenia wouldn't withstand sanctions if they were imposed,” he admitted.
