Switched my old laptop over to linux with little to no problems yester-day. So far this machine is over 5 years old and by far the oldest I've ever had. My hope is to use it til the wheels fall off.

I would rate the process 'medium' difficulty. If you have access to help, another pair of eyes on your install and configuration couldn't hurt. In some cases you have to set items manually like the firewall for instance. Overall this experience was way better than the previous ones. There are tens of thousands of app choices now compared to back then and most hardware is no problem at all.

You will feel fast, safe, and secure.

    *****Edited to add*****

So a problem surfaced and it took about an hour or two to sort out but this is what I was expecting and I got it solved but someone not so into computers might have struggled with it. So you got to be careful if your learning from the get go.

    • Linus Torvalds Was Right About Microsoft, and Now It's Too Late...:

What if the way you use your computer has been changing without you noticing? This video explores a long-running perspective on control, open ecosystems, and how modern tech platforms are evolving in 2026. From cloud dependency to AI-driven systems, the shift isn’t just technical—it’s about who really controls your digital experience. If you’ve ever questioned how much ownership you truly have over your device, this breakdown offers a deeper look.

Torvalds gave a massive gift to the world with his open software, clever computer people have known how good Linux is for a long time. That is why all the data center servers and all the huge logistics warehouse run on Linux and not Micro-slop.

    • Why Gaming on Linux Suddenly Matters:

From broken drivers to the Steam Deck selling millions, Linux gaming has gone from "is this the year?" to "wait, it actually works now." But getting here took a decade of tinkering, a billion-dollar bet from Valve, and an open-source community that refused to quit. In this video we talk to Valve and the Batocera project about how Linux quietly became a real threat to Windows - and why Microsoft is playing catch-up.
