Chinese AI company launches “95% accurate” pet translator
    by Matthew Benson
    Published: May 23, 2026, 11:18https://www.dexerto.com/entertainment/chinese-ai-company-launches-95-accurate-pet-translator-3367432/

A startup company based in China claims to have invented an AI-powered device that can translate a pet’s behavior and vocalizations into human speech.

Pet translator apps have been around for years, but are usually only intended for humor and entertainment, with no real science behind them. However, Chinese startup Meng Xiaoyi, based in Hangzhou, has claimed that their new pet translator device genuinely works.

The company started accepting preorders for the device at the beginning of May, and have since revealed that 10,000 units have been reserved by pet owners thus far.

    The device explained

The AI translator costs 799 yuan (roughly $118). According to the company, it is powered by Alibaba Cloud’s Qwen language model, which uses accumulated voiceprint data that tracks animals’ anatomical and behavioral traits.

It is worn around the pet’s neck, and can allegedly recognise their behavior, vocalizations, and emotions, and translate them into human speech, with an accuracy rate near 95%.

However, the company has faced some skepticism owing to the fact they haven’t yet published any data or studies to support their claims of the device’s capabilities.

Regardless, the company received the equivalent of $1 million from early investors, potentially serving as evidence of their confidence in the idea and potential, but not necessarily proof of the technology working exactly as claimed.

Interesting project, on the face of it. Odd that the company hasn’t been forthcoming with details. Maybe they expect that their IP would be stolen or legally modified, resulting in lost market share, because China.

It might also be a complete scam. $1m from 10k is $100 per “reservation”, seems like a lot for a $118 device.

Iirc, a few years ago, I read of efforts to decode whale language. Whale vocalizations are quite varied and complex, and whales are smart and social. That would be so cool!

The other way would be, or might involve, some kind of telepathy (there might be a better word, nowadays). This way has obvious scary implications for human thoughts. Intentions, mind banter. Worst case, imo, would be ability for 2-way comms, which might allow spurious inputs. Decades ago, I had the idea that a particular election may have been influenced in that way.

It would be interesting to test it . But I'm sure it's too simple to be true.

Animals who live with us ( or in human proximity ) learn many words and phrases of our languages, sometimes many languages.

Of course they focus on "food" the most and get annoyed , angry or frustrated at the human who interprets their "demands for love" other than "I'm hungry".

Understanding improves when they are not too many items in question.

Some of the kittens of different origin , jungle cats different from tiny domestic cats who live around the house "talk to us" regularly , mostly when they are hungry.
But sometimes they want "else". Once I forgot to give them water. The demand then repeated itself sounding like "wawa wawa " , monotonously.
Soon i figured out that the water bowl is empty. And when I filled it the cat immediately rushed to it, drank, looked at me back like my disgruntled teacher of German language :"how do you dare not to understand "awa"?"

There are no boundaries of their linguistic expression as far as I can say including long musings when one of them pass away.

They love to talk to Thai people for that reasons, the frequency of the language reminds of meowing and it seems to evoke lots of charm.

People should definitely try to learn "some basics" from their pet the way we do with any other language, by mimicking it , repeating it ( gives them neurofeedback too ) and trying to find out what is it they really wanted.
