On this day the American Revolutionary War ended in 1781. This war arose from tension between Great Britain’s 13 North American colonies and the British colonial government. France entered the American Revolution on the side of the colonists in 1778, turning what had essentially been a civil war into an international conflict. With France’s assistance, Americans effectively won independence with British surrender in Yorktown, Virginia, in 1781.
