Russia could introduce its first official Islamic banking standard within a month, according to Anatoly Aksakov, head of the State Duma’s financial markets committee.

Speaking at the KazanForum "Russia-Islamic World”event, Aksakov said Moscow is working with the central bank and financial institutions to finalise standards for “partner financing” based on Sharia principles.

Islamic banking bans interest-based lending and speculative transactions, while restricting financing for sectors such as alcohol, gambling and tobacco. Russia has been running pilot programmes in Tatarstan, Bashkortostan, Dagestan and Chechnya since 2023.
