    give a **** about nature

last saturday morning off the coast of rakiura in southern new zealand, fishers spotted a southern right whale tangled in a fishing net.

Zac penman, the country's expert in large-whale disentanglement, was at a surfing competition 800km away. He started planning the rescue from the road.

By monday, the team located the whale and caught up to it by boat on tuesday afternoon. They pulled themselves slowly up the rope toward the whale, which let out a single trumpet-blow that penman said he could feel in his bones.

It took 45 minutes to cut the whale free. It swam away into the sunset. The team went back to rakiura for a well-dserved beer.

Southern right whales were hunted nearly to extinction in the 19th century. Of the new zealand population, there are now between 1,000 and 5,000 individuals.

They are sacred to ngāi tahu, the south island's largest māori iwi. Every animal in the population matters to the recovery.

The whale survived because fishers reported the sighting quickly. Most whale entanglements end the other way.

An elephant in Sri Lanka that was swept out to sea, was spotted 5 miles from shore and rescued.

Far out at sea, five miles from shore, sailors spotted an elephant struggling in the waves. The exhausted giant had been swept away while crossing a lagoon, caught in the pull of the tide, too far from land to swim back. Every breath was a struggle, every movement a fight for survival. Onlookers could only watch, their hearts heavy as the enormous animal battled against the relentless sea.

The Sri Lankan navy responded immediately, launching an urgent rescue operation. Divers plunged into the water, navigating strong currents and slippery waves, carefully approaching the giant with ropes in hand. The elephant was terrified but resilient, refusing to surrender as it twisted and pushed against the ropes. The rescuers moved slowly, understanding that any sudden movement could injure the elephant or themselves. Hours passed with painstaking effort — twelve grueling hours of patience, precision, and bravery.

Finally, as dusk approached, the elephant’s feet touched the sandy shore. Exhausted but alive, it paused for a moment, as if taking in the security of solid ground after the long ordeal. With one last powerful push, it rose, trunk raised high, nostrils flaring, and disappeared into the forest. The rescuers watched in awe, realizing they had witnessed not only the survival of a magnificent creature but also the triumph of human courage and compassion.

That day, a lost soul was brought safely home through teamwork, determination, and empathy. The story spread quickly, reminding the world that acts of courage, patience, and care can save lives, even in the most extreme conditions. It was a reminder that every life matters — and that sometimes, the smallest gestures of bravery can have the greatest impact.

It turns out the elephant was 10 miles away from shore.
