    Saharan dust storm turns Crete skies red, cancels flights in Heraklion

    A powerful Saharan dust storm swept across Crete on April 1, transforming skies into a deep red haze, disrupting flights and prompting health warnings across the island.

    Cyclone Vaianu Brings Extreme Winds and Flooding to New Zealand (12:46)
    (April 12, 2026) A powerful cyclone has triggered catastrophic flooding across parts of New Zealand, submerging entire neighborhoods and leaving communities facing one of the most intense weather events in recent years. As the storm system moved across coastal regions, heavy rainfall combined with extreme winds created a dangerous and rapidly evolving situation.

    In multiple areas, water levels rose so quickly that entire residential zones were overwhelmed within hours. Homes became nearly fully submerged, with only rooftops visible above the floodwaters. Vehicles were swept away or left completely underwater, while debris from damaged structures filled the streets, now transformed into fast-moving rivers.

    Meteorologists explain that this event was driven by a combination of deep tropical moisture and strong atmospheric instability. As the cyclone made landfall, it brought intense rainfall over already saturated ground, increasing runoff and forcing rivers to overflow into surrounding communities. Strong winds added to the damage, bending trees, tearing apart structures, and pushing water further inland.

    Yes, Cyclone Vaianu battered New Zealand's North Island, forcing evacuations and power outages.

    However, I'd wager a month of my Avalon Admin salary that that "Weather Is Dangerous" report is more click-bait exaggerated AI slop, typical for that channel.

    I asked an AI tool that I trust more, Perplexity.ai, if there was evidence supporting "Weather Is Dangerous" report .

    Here is what I asked Perplexity.ai, including a quote from the "Weather Is Dangerous" report:

    === Begin my question ===
    Is there any evidence supporting the following description (from a notorious click-bait Youtube channel that brings dishonor to AI modeling) is accurate for Cyclone Vaianu?

    Quote In multiple areas, water levels rose so quickly that entire residential zones were overwhelmed within hours. Homes became nearly fully submerged, with only rooftops visible above the floodwaters. Vehicles were swept away or left completely underwater, while debris from damaged structures filled the streets, now transformed into fast-moving rivers.
    === End my question ===

    Perplexity.ai replied with a detailed reply and over a dozen references, beginning with the following summary:

    === Begin Perplexity.ai summary ===
    Based on credible reporting and official information so far, there is no evidence that Cyclone Vaianu produced New‑Zealand scenes matching that specific, extreme description (entire residential zones with only rooftops visible, widespread homes nearly fully submerged, streets as fast‑moving rivers with many vehicles swept away).
    === End Perplexity.ai summary ===

    Here is a link to a larger portion of the above Perplexity.ai chat:I would suggest not visiting the "Weather Is Dangerous" Youtube channel. (Not suggesting this as a forum admin; just as one human to another.)

    Tropical storms Boris and Christina

    Danilo Evangelista

    Here's a look at Tropical Storms #Boris and #Cristina which are both doubling up on the Pacific right now. Both storms are stronger than expected right now, with the latest ASCAT pass finding winds in #Cristina above 50 kts right now. Current intensity for both is 40 kts.

    🌀 Authorities predict that Tropical Storm Boris will make landfall in the Costa Chica region and parts of Acapulco without turning into a hurricane. Although it will weaken upon entering, the rains will continue for the next 24 hours.

    "May 2026 closed with the equatorial Pacific tipping into a Super El Niño, deadly floods on five continents, snow falling well into spring across the northern hemisphere, and one of the most dramatic months for meteor fireballs on record, including a bolide that exploded over Massachusetts with energy NASA initially placed at 300 tons of TNT, since revised closer to 1,000, and a brilliant green fireball captured plunging behind the erupting Mayon Volcano in the Philippines. We connect the dots the way we always do, with the Sun, not CO₂, at the center of the story.

    ▶ If this is the first you've heard of these events, you're not imagining it. Most of this isn't reaching mainstream coverage. "

    Shocking Images Of Illinois EXTREME Tornado Outbreak - $500 Million In DAMAGES

    "Illinois tornado outbreak: a massive tornado struck Streator and northwest Indiana on June 11, 2026, in the region's most dangerous outbreak in nearly 2 years.

    The Illinois and Indiana tornadoes left a tornado emergency, more than 10 reported twisters, collapsed homes, rescues in Streator and Merrillville, and 380,000 customers without power.
    On the evening of June 11, 2026, wave after wave of supercells dropped tornadoes across northern and central Illinois and northwest Indiana. A large tornado plowed directly through Streator, a city of 12,000, where a man was pulled from the rubble of his leveled home, while Merrillville, Indiana saw more than a dozen homes torn apart and part of a high school's roof ripped away. This video breaks down the full timeline, the tornado emergency near Washburn, why this outbreak hit a region still cleaning up from the night before, and the reason a direct urban strike ended without a single reported death.

    Nine counties in Kentucky declared “written states of emergency”, following Hurricane Helene’s dump in Sept 2024. The 3 counties named in the description for this recent flooding were not among those.

    In hilly country like this, like in all of the areas in Kentucky, Tennessee, and North Carolina hit hard by Helene, lots and some places most of development is in valleys. Only a matter of time, before rainfall swells creeks and rivers to torrents.

    Off topic question, tho about this area and apt for this thread: anybody know if the New Madrid (pronounced mad-rid) geologic fault runs through these Helene-ravaged areas? I recall warnings that that is due, or overdue, for another whopper of an earthquake.

    STORYLINE:
    Venezuelans took the search for missing loved ones into their own hands Friday in the aftermath of back-to-back earthquakes, citing the scarcity of government rescuers, as the human toll of the disaster climbed to at least 920 dead and more than 51,000 missing.

    Citizens digging through the rubble of their homes said they have seen few state rescue teams in the areas hit hardest by the devastating 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude quakes that struck late Wednesday, despite authorities projecting an image of a robust government response.

    The lack of help compounded families' desperation as the pressure to find buried survivors increased with each passing hour.

    The South American nation on Friday marked nearly two days since the disaster.

    Aid agencies consider the first 48 to 72 hours to be a crucial time frame to retrieve people alive, though that period can be extended if they have access to food and water.

    Omar Guariato was celebrating his granddaughter's 5th birthday at home when the earthquakes began.

    As he sat in a camp for displaced people in the hard-hit La Guaira, he recalled the moment the house next door collapsed.

    "My house didn't collapse, but then when my daughter went out to look for her child, the house next door, which is three-stories high, collapsed and fell on top of her. It covered her, she was trapped."

    On Friday night, Venezuelan authorities announced they would block off access to La Guaira, the epicenter of the destruction, as chaos and and traffic began to affect search efforts.

    Government officials said that those who wanted to enter would now have to seek official permits, but provided few details of who would be allowed to enter.

    Meanwhile, a broad international aid effort accelerated, with dozens of rescue teams from around the globe arriving in Venezuela or due to arrive there soon."
