Default Animals Used in Regeneration Projects

As per title, I am sure we can find many examples out there.

Starting off with, ultimately, a sad one.

    The Donkey Experiment

Quote In one of the toughest parts of Australia, a barefoot grazier is running a bold regenerative experiment that might land him in jail.

For the past three decades Chris Henggeler has dedicated his life to transforming an eroding, desolate, fire-prone property in the Kimberley into an oasis of green paddocks and fresh running water.

A secret of his success — feral donkeys.

Despite the support of ecologists and a local Indigenous resident, the pastoralist has found on the wrong side of the law.

*On October 29, 2025, Western Australia's State Administrative Tribunal ruled that Mr Henggeler must cull more than 100 feral donkeys.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The State Administrative Tribunal has upheld a control notice issued to Kachana Station in the east Kimberley in 2021.

The managers have been ordered to cull 117 feral donkeys.

Quote "However much we might consider that the land management practices being employed by Kachana may warrant further consideration and investigation, we have no mandate to engage in or meaningfully contribute to that broader debate," the tribunal said.

That's wicked - how could any right-minded individual mandate that cull? I hope that the outcry is sufficiently loud to overturn this judgement, I'm sure that many would support it.

Sadly it appears to be the way of officialdom everywhere. The people that land in these roles like orders and guidelines, then all they have to do is apply the rules and not use a modicum of thought or humanity.

"Not my job!" - "Beyond our remit" etc.
( The type of people you invariably have brief visions of smacking in the mouth during an encounter ).

A Success Story on the Knepp Estate in England.

    WIKI - Knepp_Wildland

Quote Knepp Wildland is the first major lowland rewilding project in England. It comprises 1,400 hectares (3,500 acres) of former arable and dairy farmland in the grounds of Knepp Castle, in West Sussex.

Since 2000 when the conversion from intensive agriculture started, the land now supports many rare species including turtle doves, barbastelle bats, slow-worms and barred grass snakes; it has become a major nesting site for nightingales; a breeding hotspot for purple emperor butterflies; the site of the first white stork chicks raised in the wild in England for 600 years, and is home to the first beavers living in the wild in Sussex for 400 years. On 17 November 2021, the very rare vagrant emperor dragonfly (Anax ephippiger) was discovered in one field.
