Scandalous... it's as though someone decided to inflict damage to the reputation of the United States as one of the event's three host nations. But why?

FIFA Football World Cup is set to begin tomorrow and over the past few days the 48 participating teams have been arriving to their three host nations: Mexico, US and Canada. Sadly, many of them faced scandalously unfriendly welcome to the United States where many faced draconian security checks, interrogations and even deportations.

- Uzbekistan's national team, which arrived in New York for a friendly match against the Netherlands, were subjected to intensive screening which included a check with the assistance of drug-detection dog. The Dutch team wasn't subjected to the same treatment.

-Senegalese players were also subjected to intrusive security checks.

- Iraqi striker Aymen Hussein, who is his national team's vice-captain and one of the country's key players was detained at Chicago's O'Hare airport for interrogation that lasted almost seven hours.

- The Iraqi national team's official photographer was denied entry without any explanation and deported from the US.

- Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan — Africa's Referee of the Year 2025 who was selected as one of 52 officials for the 2026 World Cup, and the first Somali ever at the tournament — was denied entry into the United States at Miami Airport on June 6. He was deported over vague "vetting concerns" in spite of his his holding a valid visa and a diplomatic passport.

- Iranian team was informed that they can only enter the US to play their games but will not be allowed to stay overnight. Iran is the only team in the World Cup that will be forced to enter and exit the United States on the same days when they play their games which sets their team at a clear disadvantage relative to their opponents.

These examples paint a needlessly ugly image of one of the World Cup's host nations. The obvious question is, why?

Athletes are ambassadors of peace

The teams arriving in the US are top level professional athletes and the idea that they might pose a security threat or use the World Cup to deal drugs is unlikely, to put it politely. They are sports ambassadors of their own nations, invariably aware that they should represent their nations with honor as role models to younger people.

Besides, one of the main objectives of international sporting events is to bring nations closer together in a friendly and respectful way. Even if opposing teams' nations are adversarial to one another, the athletes usually have a respectful and friendly disposition amongst themselves. They pour their lives' blood, sweat and tears in the same striving and understand each other far better than politicians and diplomats ever could. The following example is not atypical:

In the final match of the European mixed martial arts championship in Belgrade in February this year, Serbian fighter Marko Ivković fought against his Croatian rival Petar Pejić. The fight was very closely contested and narrowly won by the Croatian fighter. After the match, both players wrapped themselves in their respective national flags, but instead of hostility and trash talk, the two embraced and congratulated one another for the fight.

Then, after the winner was declared and in front of the full audience and TV cameras, the two swapped flags: the Croatian fighter wrapped himself in Serbian flag, and the Serbian fighter in Croatian flag.

Social Media Banned For Under 16s in UK

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced a sweeping ban on social media use for those under 16, joining other countries around the world seeking to protect children online. "It's a big step for our country," Starmer said in a recorded video message released Monday. "Social media is making our children unhappy and unsafe, and as a parent, as much as a Prime Minister, I just can't let that go on anymore," he added.

Nor could any Scientist (or mathematician, programmer or engineer) worthy of their middle school diploma provide any means by which this could be accomplished, without forcing all users of any affected social medium to provide robust identification. Social media would require stronger verification than we require for voting, firearms, driving, or purchasing alcohol. (Granted - identification requirements for voting in some U.S. jurisdictions are rather too lax.)

Our "trusted" government and/or their hired or covert, public or private, corporate or personal, agents would have total tracking and control of all social media usage, both viewing and posting.

I would not trust Starmer (or numerous similar in my nation) with 0.00001% of that power.

BREAKING NEWS: India is being cut out of the title of the US force dominating Asia, it was revealed just now.

US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth tweeted on X about an hour ago that “US Indo-Pacific Command” will revert to its old name, “US Pacific Command”.

This comes across as the latest of multiple moves from the western allies against India.

- The US attacked three Indian ships last week, killing three sailors. The US left the ships to sink, and the surviving sailors were rescued by Oman.

- Earlier this week, the UK armed forces grabbed an Indian-run ship, the Smyrtos, as it passed through the Straits of Dover on its way to India.

Both acts appear to contravene international law, specialists say.

EXPLOITING INDIA AS A PARTNER
The “Indo-Pacific” name was introduced in May 2018 by the US armed forces to emphasize the US's favoring of India and "oversight" of the Indian Ocean area.

In 2025, the US military instructed the international mainstream media to use “Indo-Pacific” in place of “Asia-Pacific”. The media obeyed, as Google searches confirm, with a spike in the use of that name.

At the time, the US believed it could exploit India as a partner to maintain western domination over Asia--as specified in US foreign policy.

But the US and its vassal ("ally") the UK appear to have changed attitude to India these days, and so the “Indo” is disappearing from the name with immediate effect. US Indo-Pacific Command is now US Pacific Command.

Hegseth’s announcement of the name reversion today echoes his earlier move – to change Department of Defense to the (admittedly more accurate) Department of War.

The UK seizure is an astonishing story.

On Sunday this week, the UK armed forces grabbed the Smyrtos, as it passed through the English channel on its way to Sikka in India.

The Smyrtos is owned by a Hong Kong-registered company, Zhao Yao Shipping Ltd, and is managed by a company in Tamil Nadu, India.

The UK claimed it was a stateless ship carrying Russian oil – but the seizure would still be illegal under international law, said Craig Murray, former Head of Maritime Section of the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Just because the US or an ally creates a sanction, that has no force of law in a transnational context.

DIRTY TRICK
Murray shared an untold story. When the Smyrtos began its journey, it was flying the Cameroonian flag and was listed on the Cameroonian register.

But after it had set sail, the EU and UK threatened to halt development aid to Cameroon unless they removed Russia-friendly vessels from their shipping register.

“So the UK blackmailed Cameroon into deregistering the ship. Then, before the ship could reach a friendly port, the UK boarded it because it had been deregistered,” said Murray.

It may surprise some people that western nations should do such a dirty trick. “The UK actions are patently – and deliberately – unreasonable,” Murray added.

But the UK public is not hearing the real facts – it is “an astonishing story which the media will not tell you”, he said.
