UN Human Rights Commisioner Calls for Immediate Lifting of U.S. Sanctions on Cuba

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, denounced that unilateral coercive measures by the United States against Cuba are causing infant deaths due to lack of basic medical supplies, in remarks made Monday in Geneva.

Official data shows infant mortality doubling to 9.9 per 1,000 live births and childhood cancer survival rates falling from 85% to 65%, while the UN official stated that “recent tightening of extraterritorial sanctions, taken together, are directly harming Cubans, especially the most vulnerable” and that “these sanctions must be lifted immediately”.

Türk elaborated on social media that financial persecution has kept the supply of basic medicines at a critical 30%, and private corporations’ risk aversion has paralyzed distribution of 2,900 metric tons of UN‑managed humanitarian food for vulnerable populations. The fuel shortage from the U.S. siege cut national agricultural production by 60%, driving up basic goods prices, while fear of White House fines disconnects the island from international payment systems.

“Cuba faces increasing isolation. Companies are leaving. Fewer airlines fly to the country. It is almost disconnected from international payment systems. Rising summer temperatures risk increasing the spread of vector borne and waterborne diseases. The hurricane season further increases exposure. This creates a perfect storm for social and economic deterioration and suffering for the Cuban people,” said the High Commissioner.

He also urged private corporations to avoid over‑compliance with U.S. sanctions and indiscriminate breaking of trade ties, in line with UN business guidelines.

The energy stranglehold began after President Donald Trump’s January 29, 2026 executive order cutting off fuel shipments, causing blackouts of over 20 hours across the island. The Cuban government categorically rejected Washington’s accusations, calling Trump’s order fascist, criminal, and genocidal. Türk concluded the coercive measures are incompatible with international law.

🇨🇺 Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Commander of the Revolution Ramiro Valdes Menendez, honoring his lifelong dedication to Cuba and the Revolution.

Diaz-Canel remembered Valdes with “respect, affection, and gratitude” for his guidance, loyalty, and unwavering commitment to the country.

He highlighted Valdes’ absolute fidelity to Fidel Castro, Raul Castro, his fellow revolutionaries, and the ideals of the Moncada Program—principles he defended from the 1953 assault on the dictatorship’s fortress until his final breath.

His passing on Father’s Day has filled the day with mourning while reaffirming the legacy of a generation that devoted its entire life to the Revolution.

    =====

From directors Abby Martin and Matt Belen, Cuba After Castro delivers the definitive portrait of Miguel Díaz-Canel, Cuba’s first leader born after the Revolution.
Through this unprecedented in-depth interview we see a vision of revolutionary Cuba suppressed in the west: a nation of collective values and defiance in the face of constant threats from the United States.

The film chronicles Diaz-Canel’s formation as an unexpected successor to the Castros — an unassuming organizer molded by the revolutionary process.
Confronting a perfect storm of intensified U.S. sanctions, a media war, a devastating pandemic, and historic domestic protests.
Díaz-Canel reflects on navigating these existential crises for the nation he has come to lead.

The most unserious journalism I've seen in a long time. They're saying "reason unknown" as if the U.S. doesn't have Cuba blockaded. The way the media whitewashes mass suffering caused by the U.S. and the West is crazy.

    Bruno Rodríguez P

    Translated from Spanish
Cuban families, especially children and youth, and mothers, feel the suffering of prolonged and unbearable blackouts. Many times, when there is no electricity, there is also no water. They know the anguish of lacking a medication for a sick person. The shortage of food or the high prices of basic necessities weighs heavily.

The infant mortality rate of 4.0 per thousand live births has increased to 9.9. This means the avoidable death, under other conditions and with suitable equipment, devices, and treatments, of 1,780 newborns.

The number of people who die from cancer in the country has increased significantly. In the case of children and youth, survival rates have dropped from 85% to 65%. The trend coincides with the harshest moments of the U.S. blockade.

The blockade suffocates and kills silently. Addressing this ruthless crime is also a responsibility of the United Nations.

    #CubaNoEsUnaAmenaza, the blockade is.

Calling Cuba repressive after jailing 14,000 peaceful protesters in 2020 and murdering them on our streets years later is the most duplicitious and dishonest thing the U.S. loves to do to other countries. It's outright hypocrisy.

Our media calls it propaganda when other countries use these facts against us, but it's really just the truth laid bare.
