I watched Gladiator II this week. A lot of violence that I had to fast forward! The parallels to the American empire today are stark , and it is not a pretty picture. What is perhaps remarkable about the film is that there are not clear good guys and bad guys. The character that Denzel Washington plays is the most intriguing. They all serve the empire, but have different pictures of what that empire is. The mad emperors are dispatched by the end of the film, but the empire is saved with its basic hegemonic view of the world preserved (and its right to conquer and enslave).

Perhaps Americans do not recognise how corrupt the country has become, but if you purge the mad emperor and the corruption, does a hegemonic US empire have a place in the modern world? 250 years is not that long when compared with Iranian and Chinese and European civilizations etc., so maybe the flourishing of culture (no, not burgers and Botox!) and enlightenment is in the future.
