The United States has just marked a major anniversary, 250 years since it declared independence from Great Britain and, in theory, this should be a moment of national pride with another historical milestone passed, another reason for flags, fireworks, and speeches about destiny.

But the mood is not especially festive.

Two weeks before the anniversary, Reuters published a poll that captured the depth of American anxiety – and the numbers were grim. More than two-thirds (70%) of Americans no longer consider their country the greatest nation on Earth, while 64% believe American democracy is in danger. And 38% don’t believe the United States will survive another 250 years as a single country. (my emphasis)

The answers split sharply along party lines, with Republicans still clinging more strongly to the idea of the exceptional country of prosperity and divine favor. Among Democrats, the mood is much darker and pessimism has become almost a worldview as the United States has arrived at its 250th anniversary in the middle of a profound crisis of belief.

Americans are formally free in that they elect presidents and congressmen. Yet Congress is filled with elderly politicians who seem determined to change nothing and who often leave public life only when nature finally intervenes. Presidents speak beautifully on campaign trails, but once inside the White House, they usually follow the same old path so while the faces change, the machine remains and freedom, too, begins to look hollow. Even as national media coverage of it ebbed since last year, Donald Trump’s “Murder Inc.” at sea never stopped. As of last month, the Trump-Vance administration is still conducting its (almost certainly criminal) lethal bombing campaign against supposed “narcoterrorist” drug boats. The killing spree shows no sign of abating.

Sources familiar with the situation tell Zeteo that President Trump wants more of them and has talked to key officials in recent weeks about expanding operations. He still goes over menus of different plans and boat routes to target. He and his administration keep propagandizing about how they’re winning this war, making the U.S. safer, saving tens of thousands of lives per strike, and keeping illicit narcotics off of American streets, all without actually knowing who they’re killing.

But the bombings aren’t just illegal or wrong. According to U.S. intel and government data described to Zeteo by several American officials and others familiar with the situation, the killing also isn’t working. At all. And the White House knows this.

Does anyone know of any time in history when two separate nation states merged their military arms of government? This goes way beyond military co-operation in an operation/war, which we can find many examples of. The EU probably comes the closest to countries merging at certain levels and thus giving up their sovereignty in those areas?

IMO, short-term gain is long-term pain (trying to view the situation objectively), which is why this is not common practice.

After the U.S. and Iran agreed to a ceasefire deal on June 17, a senior U.S. official was monitoring the online reaction when they noticed something surprising.

President Donald Trump’s aides had expected his supporters to celebrate the agreement. Instead, online influencers in Trump’s MAGA movement were excoriating it on social media. One shared an Israeli op-ed titled, “You Could Have Been the Greatest President of All—But You Failed.” Several posted the same video of Qatar’s prime minister appearing to snub Vice President J.D. Vance in Israel, arguing it showed regional powers dismissing the Trump Administration’s “naivete.” Others accused Trump of surrendering before achieving his stated objective of eliminating Iran’s nuclear program. Many of the posts appeared almost simultaneously, with similarities in language and tone.

The official began collecting screenshots, and came to believe it wasn’t a coincidence. Tracing tweets by prominent members of the online right, the official came to believe there was an unlikely figure at the center of all this criticism: Trump’s former presidential campaign manager and digital guru, Brad Parscale.

Last September, the global ad agency Havas hired Parscale’s firm, Clock Tower X, to conduct a digital campaign on behalf of the State of Israel, according to Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) filings reviewed by TIME. Under the agreement, Parscale’s operation would produce 100 original pieces of content each month, with at least 80% aimed at Gen Z audiences across TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and podcasts. In a Services Agreement draft included in the filing, Parscale also pledged to amplify the campaign across social media and through “integration of narrative messaging into Salem Media Network properties and aligned distribution channels,” referring to the Christian conservative broadcasting and publishing company where he serves as Chief Strategy Officer. Parscale vowed the effort would produce at least 50 million digital impressions per month, as well as influence how AI tools such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and Google’s Gemini characterized Israel and the war. For all this, Israel agreed to pay Clock Tower X $1.5 million per month.

The Parscale-led effort continues, but neither the Trump Administration nor the Israelis appear happy about how it’s going. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government had hired Parscale to improve the nation’s standing among conservatives, only to watch support continue to erode on the American right and across the broader U.S. electorate. "We are pissed at Brad Parscale," says the Israeli official familiar with the arrangement, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. "He was supposed to make things better. We have paid him lots of money. But what did he do with it? Things have only gotten worse." According to the Pew Research Center, favorable views of both Israel and Netanyahu have fallen since last year. Only 32% of Americans now view the Israeli government favorably, the lowest level in decades. In April, Pew found that Republicans with a negative view of Israel ticked up since last year, with 57% of young Republicans having an unfavorable view of Israel compared with 50% a year ago. Global antisemitic incidents, meanwhile, have surged 34% since the Iran war’s outbreak, according to the Combat Antisemitism Movement’s Antisemitism Research Center.

Shame on Trump for not calling the war in Iran a war; he is attempting to take a page out of Putin's playbook, calling his war a conflict or military operation instead.

War is generally defined as armed conflict between states, nations, or organized groups within a nation, characterized by widespread violence, destruction, and mortality. It involves the organized use of military force to achieve political, economic, or territorial objectives.

Trump has tried to pass off legal and procedural considerations for not calling war, war. The entire world knows that he is attempting to manage worldwide and domestic public perception and to obscure the reality of a full scale international armed conflict. I am afraid it's not working.
