Here is a real time feed. Hit the refresh button for updates. 7.9 is the biggest quake listed. It is the same time as the earlier 8.9 reported. The 8.9 came with the proviso that it had not yet been reviewed by a seismologist.

I'm outside my house thats an old house... with my p.c. and stuff. Everyone's out on the streets.. it lasted for well over 2 mins.. like wide waving. Me and the misses were huddling in the street being thrown off our feet from time to time.

Just watching the live feed. There was a massive explosion just now at that oil refinery fire. I feel for those guys on the ground. I hope noone was too close to that.

The Richter scale is exponential: each point represents 31 times more energy; so if 1 is 1, 2 is 31, 8 is 28 billion and 9 is 850 billion.
It is an open-ended scale but apparently 13 would be enough to see us all off.
