Historic pre-earthquake San Francisco, 1906, with full sound design.

Background:
This film was shot on April 14, 1906, just four days before the San Francisco earthquake and fire, to which the negative was nearly lost. It was produced by moving picture photographers the Miles brothers: Harry, Herbert, Earle and Joe. Harry J. Miles hand-cranked the Bell & Howell camera which was placed on the front of a cablecar during filming on Market Street from 8th, in front of the Miles Studios, to the Ferry building. A few days later the Miles brothers were en route to New York when they heard news of the earthquake. They sent the negative to NY, and returned to San Francisco to discover that their studios were destroyed.

The origin of the film was an enigma for many decades, and it was long thought to have been shot in September of 1905, after being dated as such by the Library of Congress based on the state of construction of several buildings. However, in 2009 and 2010, film historian David Kiehn, co-founder of Niles Film Museum in Niles, California, dated the film to the spring of 1906 from automobile registrations and weather records. Kiehn eventually found promotional materials from the film's original release and dated the film to April 14th, 1906, and finally gave credit to the filmmakers, the Miles Brothers.

Restoration:
This version was transferred from a new 35mm print made from a restored 35mm negative, taken from the 1906-era 35mm print owned by the Prelinger Archives. This version does not appear to have any digital restoration, except minimal contrast and brightness adjustments.

This version of the film has been digitally stabilized to remove jitter by youtube user Rick88888888 in 2011.

Accuracy:
Automobile sounds are all either Ford Model T, or Model A, which came out later, but which have similarly designed engines, and sound quite close to the various cars shown in the film. The horns are slightly inaccurate as mostly bulb horns were used at the time, but were substituted by the far more recognizable electric "oogaa" horns, which came out a couple years later. The streetcar sounds are actual San Francisco streetcars. Doppler effect was used to align the sounds.

This is a new scan of 35mm film held by Prelinger Archives, San Francisco and thought to be an original 1906 print. It was scanned by Adrianne Finelli at Internet Archive on October 11, 2018 using IA's Lasergraphics ScanStation scanner set at 5120 x 3840 and scanned to 16fps. This full-width scan is 4096 x 3072 pixels wide and every second frame is doubled for a playback framerate of 24fps.

Archives frequently make full-width scans to show information between the perforations that would normally be missing in a scan cropped to show only the picture area. Black printed-through perforations and other characteristics of the print may also be seen at certain points in the film.

This is the most complete version of the historic film, "A Trip Down Market Street," combining the best elements of prints from Prelinger Arichives and Library of Congress.

Starfish Prime

This was a thermonuclear warhead that was detonated in space 64 years ago - 1962.

The [excerpted] Wikipedia entry describes it, thus:

On July 9, 1962, at 09:00:09 Coordinated Universal Time (11:00:09 pm on July 8, 1962, Honolulu time), the Starfish Prime test was detonated at an altitude of 250 miles (400 km). The coordinates of the detonation were 16°28′N 169°38′W.[1]: The actual weapon yield came very close to the design yield, which various sources have set at different values in the range of 1.4 to 1.45 Mt (5.9 to 6.1 PJ). The nuclear warhead detonated 13 minutes 41 seconds after liftoff of the Thor missile from Johnston Atoll.[5]

Starfish Prime caused an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) that was far larger than expected, so much larger that it drove much of the instrumentation off scale, causing great difficulty in getting accurate measurements. The Starfish Prime electromagnetic pulse also made those effects known to the public by causing electrical damage in Hawaii, about 900 miles (1,450 km) away from the detonation point, knocking out about 300 streetlights,[1]: 5  setting off numerous burglar alarms, and damaging a telephone company microwave link.[6] The EMP damage to the microwave link shut down telephone calls from Kauai to the other Hawaiian Islands.[7]

A total of 27 small rockets were launched from Johnston Atoll to obtain experimental data from the Starfish Prime detonation. In addition, a large number of rocket-borne instruments were launched from Barking Sands, Kauai, in the Hawaiian Islands.[8]

A large number of United States military ships and aircraft were operating in support of Starfish Prime in the Johnston Atoll area and across the nearby North Pacific region.

A few military ships and aircraft were also positioned in the region of the South Pacific Ocean near the Samoan Islands. This location was at the southern end of the magnetic field line of the Earth's magnetic field from the position of the nuclear detonation, an area known as the "southern conjugate region" for the test. An uninvited scientific expeditionary ship from the Soviet Union was stationed near Johnston Atoll for the test, and another Soviet scientific expeditionary ship was in the southern conjugate region near the Samoan Islands.[9]

After the Starfish Prime detonation, bright auroras were observed in the detonation area, as well as in the southern conjugate region on the other side of the equator from the detonation. According to one of the first technical reports:[8]

The visible phenomena due to the burst were widespread and quite intense; a very large area of the Pacific was illuminated by the auroral phenomena, from far south of the south magnetic conjugate area (Tongatapu) through the burst area to far north of the north conjugate area (French Frigate Shoals)... At twilight after the burst, resonant scattering of light from lithium and other debris was observed at Johnston and French Frigate Shoals for many days confirming the long time presence of debris in the atmosphere. An interesting side effect was that the Royal New Zealand Air Force was aided in anti-submarine maneuvers by the light from the bomb.

These auroral effects were partially anticipated by Nicholas Christofilos, a scientist who had earlier worked on the Operation Argus high-altitude nuclear shots.

According to U.S. atomic veteran Cecil R. Coale,[10] some hotels in Hawaii offered "rainbow bomb" parties on their roofs for Starfish Prime, contradicting some reports that the artificial aurora was unexpected.

An extraordinary daguerreotype that hails from as long ago as 1839

Look closely and you’ll see the ghostly figures of the first Londoners ever photographed. This 1839 daguerreotype is the oldest surviving photo of London. Taken by M. de St. Croix 187 years ago, it shows Parliament Street from Trafalgar Square with the equestrian statue of King Charles I at Charing Cross.

Excellent. I think I first saw that as a teenager studying photography at college. For context, the daguerreotype, invented by Louis Daguerre, is one of the earliest photographic processes -- but not the earliest. It involved exposing a sheet of highly polished silver-plated copper treated with mercury to make it light sensitive. It was not a particularly efficient or cheap system, and better techniques quickly overtook it, like the ambrotype.

Here's another famous daguerreotype: a spring morning in 1837. A Parisian street scene that carried the caption huit heures du matin (eight o'clock in the morning). It was the very first image that reliably captured people.


It's amazing to think these images capture a time so long ago.

The Battle of the Alamo had just occurred
The Duke of Wellington, still alive, was serving as a politician
Abraham Lincoln was a young lawyer working in Illinois

In 1837, the Industrial Revolution had barely begun. Most people travelled by horse or by foot. A letter sent from London to New York took up to a month to arrive via ship. News from Australia took half a year. Homes and businesses were lit by tallow candles or whale oil lamps. Gas lighting was beginning to appear in the larger cities. There was no indoor plumbing. Water for drinking, cooking, or bathing had to be bucketed from hand-pumped wells. Hot water did not exist for the vast majority of people who could not afford wood and coal or did not have a cast-iron stove. Sanitation was nonexistent. Waste was thrown into open cesspools. As such, cholera, TB, and typhus were rife. The world was driven by coal. Every large city was coated in layers of black soot. It laced the air so it was hard to breathe. Food preservation didn't exist beyond salting, smoking or pickling. You spent your entire life eating only that which was grown locally or harvested in the last twenty days. Time zones did not exist. Every town set its clocks to "high noon" when the sun was directly overhead. No one could yet travel fast enough for time differences to matter.

Let me take you back 121 years to Christmas Eve 1905. I have cleaned-up this really incredible early Autochrome, taken by one of my very favourite early colour photographers, Julien Gérardin. It is simply entitled "Coucher de soleil sur la rivière, 24.12.1905" - "Sunset on the River, 24th December 1905".
This was taken two years before the Lumiere brothers marketed their Autochrome colour system to the general public and is a phenomenal experiment in early colour photography. I think it is absolutely stunning. It was taken using an early glass-plate colour process and isn't colourised. 😍

Comparison:

People sometimes ask about the state of the original Autochrome and the clean-up required, so I thought you might be curious to see a side-by-side comparison? The original was very dirty and dark and cleaning away a century of murk has revealed its beauty.

1906 study of two ladies in Provence

Photographed in colour a staggering 120 years ago, this is one of my all-time favourite Autochromes. I have cleaned-up this beautiful study of two ladies in Provence, pausing on their walk by a grove of olive trees in 1906. It was taken in France by an anonymous photographer using an early colour glass-plate process. It isn't colourised.

1925 Study of artists on the banks of the Dordogne at Beaulieu by Jules Gervais-Courtellemont

On such a beautiful day like today my mind is drawn back to one of the most beautiful autochromes ever taken: a study of artists on the banks of the Dordogne at Beaulieu in France 101 years ago. The light, the colour & the composition are works of art in itself!

I have cleaned up this stunning photographic plate showing an artist at his easel being painted in turn by a woman at hers. In the distance is the St Pierre Abbey church. It captures a moment of true serenity and beauty.

You will notice, because of the long exposure time required by Autochromes, that the female painter has become a double-exposed through motion blur. It was taken in colour Jules Gervais-Courtellemont in 1925 using an early colour glass-plate process and isn't colourised. It remains one of my favourite works.

The earliest known photographs of the Pyramids and the Sphinx of the Giza plateaux, Egypt.

Claimed to be the first ever photograph of the Sphinx. First published in a volume of prints in 1852 entitled "Egypte, Nubie, Palestine et Syrie". The Sphinx can barely be seen in the far right of the image.

Similar image and perspective, first published in a book of photographic prints by Frith called "Cairo, Sinai, Jerusalem, and The Pyramids of Egypt: A Series of Sixty Photographic Views. With Descriptions" (1860-61).

This one shows that there once was a staircase over the causeway of Khafre's pyramid complex that led to a viewing platform to the south-east of the Sphinx.

On September 12, 2001, the day after the twin towers fell, a man in worn firefighter gear shows up at Ground Zero and starts walking.

Smoke still filled the air. Dust covered everything. He walked through the ruins for hours, passing exhausted rescue crews, searching against hope for a familiar face.

That man was Hollywood actor Steve Buscemi.
(Reservoir Dogs, Fargo, Desperado, Armageddon, Con Air, and many more)


Most people knew him as the unforgettable character actor who played crooks, gangsters, and unsettling outsiders. But long before Hollywood, he had a quite different profession.

In 1980, Buscemi took the New York City firefighter exam and passed. He joined FDNY Engine Company 55 in Manhattan's Little Italy, and spent four years saving lives and running into burning buildings.



On the side, and in secret, he was taking acting classes. He even dabbled in stand-up on the comedy circuit. In the late eighties, he started getting small parts in television series, including The Equalizer, L.A. Law, and Miami Vice. In 1992, he got his big break playing Mr. Pink in Tarantino's breakout film, Reservoir Dogs.

But Buscemi never forgot where he came from. When the Twin Towers were attacked, he tried calling his old firehouse. Nobody answered. He knew exactly why.

Soon came the devastating news. Five firefighters from Engine 55 were missing, including a close friend he had once served beside.

He found his old gear, made his way to Ground Zero, and searched until he found his former company. At first, they looked at him with surprise. Then they recognised one of their own.

For five days, Steve Buscemi worked twelve-hour shifts beside them, digging through twisted steel and shattered concrete, searching for survivors and recovering human remains. It was exhausting, devastating work. But all the while, he avoided cameras and kept his face masked. He didn't want to be seen and recognised. He didn't care about celebrity, all he wanted to do was help his brothers.

It only ever got out because a photographer captured a single image, and fellow firefighters later told the story he never intended to share.



In 2021, Buscemi at last spoke out on the Marc Maron podcast, telling of the PTSD he suffered as a consequence of the five days he spent volunteering in the aftermath of 9/11.
