I watched live, from T-10 min.

Good launch, with a brief heart attack pause less than 60 s from T, Tim thought it would be a scrub. He was overjoyed when it lit, and was enthused at how quickly it accelerated. All 33 Raptor version 3 engines remained functional throughout the stage 1 boost phase.

On replays, I counted 3 or 4 shock diamonds in the aggregate rocket plume, each dozens of meters long. I compare that to the usual example from night pics and vids of fighter jets (and the Blackbird, back then) in afterburner. Mad thrust.

Booster had a problem just before splashdown near Starbase, came in too hot, hit hard and failed that portion of its testing. Tim said they didn’t attempt a tower catch because the new engines, so different, were an unknown. Good choice here, and Tim thinks they won’t try that next flight too.

Top unit reached the sub orbital goal trajectory, popped out 20 new version starlink satellites, which all activated. The last few shone “flashlights” back on the mothership and took vid of it for study of the condition of the heat shield tiles, as it rolled to present the vulnerable/important underbelly before the harsh re-entry.

Made a spot-on splashdown in the Indian Ocean, even flopping down with the most-heated tiles up, videoed by a drone’ cam. On board cams continued sending, until the SpaceX feed was cut, notably cams in the aft edges of the moveable ~fins, dunking in and out of the water. I felt like I was swimming in that ocean!

But for me the whole combustion-fuel-driven space crafts are sooo pathetic while perhaps aliens or members of a secret space program shake their head.

Well, Starship’s Next Flight Just Changed! Big time actually. The first Starship tower catch now pushed back months so we will have an ocean splashdown for the upper stage again with Flight 14. Never the less, Ship 41 just completed its static fire testing ahead of what should still be Starship’s first fully orbital flight. Meanwhile, Ship 40 has reached Christmas Island after Flight 13, and a massive semi-submersible vessel is on the way to transport it all the way back to Starbase, Texas. Along with that China’s reusable ZhuQue-3 successfully lands, NASA astronauts conduct more ISS spacewalks, Rocket Lab launches Electron, and Ukraine strikes Russia’s Progress Rocket Space Center, home of Soyuz rocket production.
