Flock’s Secret Plan to Turn 350,000 Rideshare Dashcams Into a Massive Surveillance Net

There are cameras watching you right now, and you probably drove right past them without a second thought… because that’s the whole point.

Flock builds automatic license plate readers, the little pole-mounted cameras you’ve probably driven past a hundred times without noticing, and by design they were built to be invisible until the day they aren’t.

There are more than 120,000 of them installed across the country now, in cities and out on rural highways, bolted outside hardware stores and gun ranges. Tucked into neighborhoods where you’d never expect a camera to be watching.

Every one of them logs the plate, color, make, model, bumper stickers, even scratches on every single car that passes, and dumps it into a searchable national database that any law enforcement agency with a Flock contract can query.

Less than one percent of the vehicles these cameras scan turn out to be connected to any crime at all.

One in ten misreads the state on the plate. One in ten. Not exactly accurate.

So for all that intrusion, all that quiet cataloging of your life, you’re mostly just feeding a machine that gets it wrong. That’s the tool.

Let’s talk about the false positives, because this is the part that should keep every driver up at night.

An internal audit out of Roseville, California, went through 1,427 Flock alerts flagging vehicles as stolen or connected to a felony over a two-year span. Seventy-one percent of them were wrong.
