Default The self may not be what we think it is

    https://newsletter.martingeddes.com/...-what-we-think

A potential category error at the core of inquiry into human experience.

    Excerpt:
"Over the last few years I have been studying how disciplines, institutions, and symbolic systems become detached from reality, and how that breach can be repaired. In the process, a more general inquiry has emerged into the conditions under which reality gets a say at all—ideally before collapse overtakes hallucination.

Whether the object is a telecoms network, a military intelligence backchannel, or an unintelligible court document, the underlying questions remain surprisingly consistent:"

Default Re: The self may not be what we think it is

Self replicating as many selves . Self projecting countless multifunctional selves as intelligent operational functions that help to "solve reality problems"..

Key: There are more problems to address than number of humans . No matter what they claim at Tesla many diverse forms of selves are still needed to solve problems.

Once a particular problem is resolved completely ( example would be "eradication of small pox) the particular "research self" can retire , it can pick another function.
But until the "problem" is alive in broader reality the self ( function ) that is temporary such as being a parent or other human responsibility can not die ,
even if it dies there is need for replacement . As each self is unique and endowed with individual function it may get impossible to "replace" one unique function or self by another .

Most societies exist due to multi - functional self to self reliability of its members , families, clubs, job organisations all depend , rise and fall , on intelligence of its members.

Even though almost every society has people with strong "social self" function who can act as therapist , ombudsman or teacher to many different selves.

Functions of the "self" are infinite because it's intelligence is fluid rather than static.

It is proverbially "faster than the blink of an eye, subtle than the subtlest, further than the furthest and nearer than the nearest .
Even while we can observe those many subtle functions when they "hit the ground" of reality flow, the way reality reacts , folding or resisting the function , resulting in better or worse human experience is about "how far" can advanced human science reach,
basically down to neural impulses, information exchange, electroshocks or for the "hard nuts", synchronising their selves with computers.

I can imagine a future without the pain of education and need to cheat at exams when we will be eventually able to "sync" a microchip and biochip and read data straight from a "dot" of quantum colloid nanocarbons containing "the content of Wikipedia , the Google Servers" etc.

and WE WILL , HENCE ON, CARRY SELVES around differently from where we do now.

The functional intelligence of selves can be improved to near perfection

unfortunately the problem of MEMORY function has not been sorted
and we are still receiving most of our education with "whip and carrot",
that is too much effort for little result .

For now billions of people rely on their computer devices and smartphones as memory banks, calculators , prophetic tools, and tools of improvement.
Withdrawing them out of sudden much of the world and it's Self would leave many people bewildered or speechless.

And yet , all of the complex function exists in ourselves whether we are able to access it or not, its own natural time DID NOT COME.

It would take SUPER FUNCTIONAL SELVES to either destroy, restart this world or create new ones.

We all have that potential in our selves.

In this age, most of us quite like historical people, are forced to minimise our selves, our functions, potentials, downsize our functions due to the pressing numbers of competitors ,
billions of freshly awakened , new born selves most of whom aspire to solve some problems.

I don't care where our naught mothers and grandmother's were with it in my age ,
I'm still eager to know and practice everyday and that's because reality Universe is infinite.

So even if I forget half of everything as usually the rest can ...restart civilisation .

    Thank you

My friend here on forum , Incider used to say :"There are only two types of people . Those who can read binary and those who can't ".

Eventually , the greater Reality that echoes the tides , waves and transformations of Universe bombards us with quantum bits of information at all times.

That's how people sat in meditation for ages, doing nothing, just listening to the whispers of soul against the roar of space .

Eventually all the quidbits align in a sequence and "make sense" or not. Our individual processing capacity is limited, we are small in size and unfairly powerless against "mother nature" should any of our selves happened to be left here alone , all to them selves as some secretly hoped for now overpowered by crowds of like-minded souls
who too wanted to be genuinely left Alone, in themselves.

"We are the Sequence. We are the sequence of Causes and Consequences..".

How intriguing that Even the most complicated "mandelbrot set of information" translates to simple chain of commands in the 3D human world.

The "Central Brain"( Self ) of this era of human civilization is overloaded with uncorrelated 4D data in need of processing.

In the dark sanctuary of Central Intelligence of Digital Humanity,

the command RUN prompted eternal DASH of little mouse at the beginning of the first computer .

But I'm almost sure there is a way to rewrite it all .

Thanks for this, John. It confirms some conceptions I have been employing in my work and accurately describes the struggle that creates the seeming conflicts of interest that plague oceanic humanity. The deeper question stands:
    rec
Quote How does reality retain the capacity to force revision within any continuity-preserving system?
I'd say, a cyclic catastrophe. Cyclic external energetic input into the local consciousness system. Cyclic geophysical restructuring of the planetary grid system.

The 'self' as answer to that question fails to get beyond indulgence and to the greater forces that affect our individualized consciousness matrices in ways that far too many are still not ready to question, let alone understand in the context of pure energetic interconnectivity. It's like the theory of the electric universe versus a gravitational universe. One is accepted because it mirrors in a hermetic way - as above, so below - the individualization process and the dynamics of social engagement, preserving ego and will above interconnectivity and multi-dimensional awareness.

The question itself, then, in my conception, has more to do with the not-self as a form of consciousness aggregate, within which the self is infinitely malleable, as Agape states so eloquently.

Thanks for the confirmatory vid, Onawah. Good times on planet earth!

This reminds me of a time when I had a book in my shelves that I used to continually see but had not picked up to seriously read, this was at a time when I was wrestling with whether to carry on with my academic career and quite possibly become a professor/tutor of Philosophy or embark on a career in Information Technology, the book was titled "The Concept of Mind" by Gilbert Ryle, a British Philosopher and student of the 'Phenomenology' School, (a critique of Cartesian duality) and he coined the expression: "The ghost in the machine" - this can become rather abstruse and the string of argument serpentine - is there a spirit/geist present in our mind, or is this simply the misrepresentation of the collective summation of all our neurons and the 'voice of our nervous system' chattering away and giving us the false conclusion that we have a spiritual/intellectual separateness?
I have to say that I disagree with G Ryle, and the book gave me a case of mental dyspepsia.
Really it was this book and my attempts to follow Gilbert's reasoning that convinced me to take the Information Technology path, and to divorce myself from the idea of becoming a professional Philosopher, for to me it is very clear that I have always had an overarching/observing presence in my mind that I converse with, that is essentially "Me" but also something remarkable and not Me at the same time - IT is applied Science, I prefer the pragmatism of it over the endless labyrinth of fruitless argument: however I still hold a solid regard for Philosophy and the quest for truth - as Bertrand Russell said, Philosophy deals with those matters we can never be sure about. Russell said a great deal more than this, but you get my meaning I am sure?

    Interesting thread topic - thanks!

This is related although there will be a more subject specific thread where it may more appropriately reside. For now, this can be used as some food for thought, I think:

When people live in a shared continuity with like-minded individuals, they often refuse to challenge their beliefs and lose any chance of being open-minded and honest about what is actually true. They prevent "the self" from attaining personal progress and growth. Instead of allowing reality to challenge their beliefs and help them improve, they cling to old ideas and resist change.

We experience ourselves through having an identity, so many people have allowed their identity to become intertwined with their political beliefs, making it too difficult to change. This also describes a functioning alcoholic or any damaged person who still manages to function in society. They refuse to change; they refuse to accept the reality of their own behavior. Eventually, only a crisis will force them to confront reality. This is true of many people in general and is one of the reasons the world is so divided. People are trying to live within a continuum of stability, but the world simply does not work that way. Most of us prefer stability over accepting reality, which is a flawed human trait. If we don’t accept change from the reality we are living in, it will eventually be forced upon us. The consequences will most likely be dire.

The sad reality is that we often think it’s others, the other guy or the other team, who lack a true sense of self. True progress depends on all of us being willing to adapt and let our changing reality guide us, even when it means admitting that we were wrong.

Bringing this back to the individual, I can say I am in the midst of a continuity crisis. I have my habits and they have me.

Initiating a new routine into the daily routine, especially one that may improve present conditions for the better, is resisted because it creates a paradox within the psyche.

Firstly, the day has already been set, with time allocated for each routine. But by adding another routine, more time is required, or at least an adjustment in allocated time. This causes stress.
Secondly, since the routine is for personal advancement, the new routine unseats the hierarchy and chaos results. This also causes stress.
Thirdly, the resistance itself to the addition of a new routine causes disassociation where the psyche deals with the new situation by splitting its identity into the "new" and the "old" self. In this way the self can deal with the resistance from both sides, both for and against the new routine. This causes confusion and is extremely stressful.

This state of transition can result in sleep pattern disruption, bad eating habits, depression, incoherence, even illness - the very opposite of intended results.

Finally, a decision has to be made and adhered to. The new routine must either be abandoned or old habits must go that interfere with it. It seems straight forward and even easy and obvious. Habits take about 40 days to break, so they say. I am at day 40 today. I can't eat, sleep, or think clearly. I am fighting depression because of the disruption. Meanwhile the new routine is visibly, noticeably, effectively working. Results are irrefutable.

Still the verdict is not in yet. Will I break the old routine and incorporate the new? Will my eating and sleeping habits clear themselves, by themselves?

Last time I was at this place my life was turned completely upside down. And I chose the old over the new in the end.

The resistance threatened to be fatal if I hadn't. As it was, it cost me everything this world treasures before I finally had to capitulate.

That is how hard continuity resists correction in matters of the self.
Couching it in these terms makes the dynamic less threatening.
It might even make the difference.

It really does make the difference, once we see clearly that "what we resist, persists".
We cannot just evict a part of ourselves, no matter how dysfunctional that part may be.
We must accept that it is part of us, but realize there is also a new part that is forming which can embrace that old part and help it to integrate and transmute.
It's largely a matter of clear perception, and though that may be the final stage after a long struggle... what a relief, when we finally really see, feel, and allow it to happen.

"Today’s episode reveals five signs that you are finally becoming your true self, even though the process may feel like confusion, loss, or something quietly going wrong. It explores Jung’s idea of individuation: the slow shedding of the persona and the return of what was buried beneath performance, approval-seeking, suppression, and borrowed certainty. The episode traces why you may stop explaining yourself, allow certain relationships to fade, feel old emotions come back to life, stop consulting the invisible committee inside your head, and begin experiencing solitude as home rather than punishment. Jung saw these shifts not as breakdown, but as evidence that the center of gravity is moving inward, toward the Self. What feels like subtraction may actually be revelation — the scaffolding falling away so the real person can finally stand."
