On the heels of yesterday’s huge M7.7 earthquake in Eastern Indonesia, another big earthquake has just struck in Sumatra measuring M6.9.

These two massive quakes were just 13 hours apart. This is a new event and there may be aftershocks.

Yesterday’s M7.7 has triggered over 30 aftershocks and counting. There might be aftershocks with this strong earthquake as well.

A second powerful earthquake has struck Indonesia, this time on the island of Sumatra, as authorities raised the death toll from the earlier magnitude-7.7 Flores earthquake to 47.

The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre recorded the Sumatra earthquake at magnitude 6.9, with its epicentre around 7km northwest of Pematangsiantar. Unlike the shallow Flores earthquake, the latest tremor occurred at a depth of about 180km and no tsunami threat was identified.

Indonesia's disaster agency said the earthquake was felt across several areas of northern Sumatra, including Medan, a city of around 2.5 million people.

Shaking reportedly lasted about 30 seconds in Medan, Simalungun and Pakpak, and around 10 seconds in Central Tapanuli.

Response teams are monitoring for damage and possible aftershocks. There have been no immediate reports of casualties from the Sumatra earthquake.

Meanwhile, the scale of the destruction from the earlier magnitude-7.7 earthquake affecting Flores and surrounding areas has continued to emerge.

Indonesia's national disaster agency said 47 people are now confirmed dead: 24 in Manggarai, 17 in East Manggarai, three in Sikka, and one each in West Manggarai, Ngada and Ende.

Almost 350 homes have sustained damage, including 157 severely damaged, 41 moderately damaged and 148 with lighter damage. Authorities have also recorded damage to 87 educational facilities, 18 health facilities and five places of worship.

Around 50 injured people have been taken to hospitals as search-and-rescue operations continue.

Indonesia's air force has transported 50,000 packages of food and other emergency supplies from Jakarta to support communities affected by the disaster.

The two powerful earthquakes struck different Indonesian islands and at significantly different depths.
