(The vicious cycle that China is trapped in especially as the dangers surrounding the 3 Gorges Dam continue to grow, and the enormous expense and engineering difficulties involved in keeping it safe become insurmountable as yearly flooding gets worse.
    What could go wrong? )

"On July 17, 2026, a massive mountainside collapsed in Pengshui, Chongqing, sending thousands of tons of rock crashing into the Wu River and burying a road below. The disaster immediately raised concerns about the wider geological stability of the region—and especially the Three Gorges Reservoir. As more warning signs emerge, questions are growing about unstable slopes, extreme rainfall, changing reservoir levels, and the long-term safety of China’s massive Three Gorges Dam. Could the Pengshui collapse be more than an isolated disaster? In this video, we examine the warnings, the risks, and the unsettling questions surrounding China’s largest dam. "

Belt and Road story, so goes here. The intended sucker this time is Ethiopia.

Ethiopia is in the orbit of China, see: head of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

But recently my take on the quality of Ethiopian thinkers got a huge boost, when I looked up abt the new top boss of Air India, Tewolde Gebremariam. This management change was a result of ongoing fallout of the AI 171 crash at Gujarat on June 12, 2025. Very impressive C.V.

I am hopeful that this project will be a successful exception to the apparent norm of B&R tofu dreg construction.

Ethiopia favors Chinese firms for its $12.5 billion mega-airport project as no major U.S. contractor makes the shortlist

    OLAMILEKAN OKEBIORUN
    17 August 2026

Chinese state-owned companies are among the leading contenders for major contracts at Ethiopia’s $12.5 billion Bishoftu International Airport, while no major independent U.S. contractor appears on the shortlist, drawing attention in Washington amid strained U.S.-Ethiopia ties shaped partly by tensions involving Egypt.

Chinese state-owned companies dominate the shortlist for main construction contracts at Ethiopia's $12.5 billion Bishoftu International Airport, with 15 out of 33 spots, while no major independent U.S. contractor made the list.

Ethiopian Airlines postponed contractor selection from August 2026 to January 2027, but says the delay will not affect the project's timeline.

Bishoftu International Airport will be the largest and most expensive aviation project in Africa, set to open in 2030 with a capacity of 60 million passengers, eventually rising to 110 million.

The project requires over $9 billion in external financing, with significant interest shown by both Western and Chinese lenders, though no final agreements are in place yet.

The U.S. is looking for ways to reassert its presence in the project after an earlier shortlist for Ethiopia’s $12.5 billion airport excluded major American contractors.

Ethiopian Airlines completed prequalification for four major construction packages in April, attracting companies and joint ventures from China, Europe, the Middle East, Türkiye, India and Russia.

Chinese firms secured 15 of the 33 places on the shortlist, either independently or through joint ventures, spanning 10 groups.

They include China Communications Construction Company, China Road and Bridge Corporation, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation and Beijing Urban Construction Group.

The four packages cover the main terminal and airport facilities, airfield works, supporting infrastructure and offsite transport links.

By contrast, no independent American contractor was shortlisted, except Connecticut-based Lane Construction Corporation, which is owned by Italy’s Webuild and appears in three packages through a joint venture with Webuild and Türkiye’s IC İçtaş.

    Contractor selection moves to 2027

Ethiopian Airlines has not yet awarded the contracts, with contractor selection pushed from August 2026 to early January 2027 after bidders requested more time to prepare proposals and arrange financing.

Group Chief Executive Mesfin Tasew said the delay would not affect the overall project schedule.

As the procurement process continues, Washington has shifted its focus towards securing a broader role for U.S. companies beyond civil construction.

Mark Mitchell, the U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce for the Middle East and Africa, said in July that the Commerce Department had been closely engaged in efforts to secure strong American participation in the project.

U.S. officials have pointed to Boeing and GE Aerospace as companies that could benefit from opportunities in aircraft, engines, aviation technology and equipment linked to Ethiopian Airlines’ expansion.

In April, Ethiopian Airlines agreed to buy six additional Boeing 787-9 aircraft, adding to 20 already on order.

More than $9 billion in external financing required

Ethiopian Airlines plans to fund about 30% of the $12.5 billion project from its own balance sheet, leaving lenders to provide more than $9 billion.

Mesfin said lenders had indicated interest worth about $8.5 billion, although no final loan agreement covering the bulk of the external financing had been signed.

The African Development Bank is acting as mandated lead arranger and has indicated it will provide $500 million, subject to appraisal, while helping mobilise additional financing.

Interest has also come from the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation, the U.S. Export-Import Bank and JPMorgan Chase.

Chinese lenders are also in discussions over the project. Ethiopian Airlines and Ethiopia’s finance ministry have held talks with Bank of China, China Exim Bank, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China and China Development Bank.

Mesfin said in November 2025 that an unnamed China-based institution had pledged $500 million.

    Washington seeks a larger role

The U.S. push for a larger commercial role comes against a history of strained relations with Ethiopia, including disagreements over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam on the Blue Nile.

Washington previously became involved in negotiations between Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan, while Addis Ababa accused the U.S. of favouring Cairo during the dispute.

The airport project now offers another channel for economic engagement, particularly through financing, aircraft, engines and aviation technology.

    Africa’s largest airport project

Bishoftu International Airport is being developed south of Addis Ababa to ease pressure on Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, which handles about 25 million passengers a year and is expected to reach capacity within the next few years.

The first phase of Bishoftu is designed to handle 60 million passengers annually when it opens in 2030, rising to 110 million passengers and about 3.73 million metric tonnes of cargo at full build-out, with parking for around 270 aircraft.

At $12.5 billion, Bishoftu is the most expensive aviation infrastructure project undertaken in Africa. Its planned annual passenger capacity of 110 million would also place it among the world’s largest airports by throughput.

(Protests over unpaid wages are common by workers in China, and despite CCP's efforts to suppress the news, it still leaks out, as well as videos of the many fires and explosions at workplaces where wages have been unpaid for too long.
If that seems unlikely to those who are buying the CCP's propaganda, this story about the same thing happening due to Chinese workers' unpaid wages at a CCP owned refinery in Russia may change their minds. )

"On August 9, 2026, a large-scale protest broke out at the construction site of the Baltic Gas Chemical Complex in Kingisepp District, Leningrad Region, Russia. More than 1,000 Chinese workers surrounded Russian police vehicles, preventing armed officers from arresting a Chinese worker who was demanding unpaid wages."

"A $23 billion deal for Panama Canal ports has placed Li Ka-shing at the center of a growing conflict between the United States and China. Donald Trump wants to reduce Chinese influence. Xi Jinping does not want strategic ports sold to Western interests. But when Hong Kong’s richest man tried to escape, Beijing pushed back. This is the story of Xi, Trump, Li Ka-shing, and the geopolitical battle over the Panama Canal."

(Given how insecure China has become from floods and other disasters, even with the oversupply of cheap labor, it's no wonder major industries are pulling out.)

"China’s job hunt’s been pushed to a brutal limit. College grads keep soaring year after year, but good jobs keep shrinking. Result? 100 people fighting for 1 spot. 4 Super Typhoons Hit China At Once: Hundreds Of Thousands Trapped In 3-Meter-Deep Floodwaters

(Flooding in China is always bad but this year's flood season is even worse than usual, due to the unusual weather. Even Shanghai is flooded and that isn't normal. The rapid rise of waters is due to the fact that the water from the many dam reservoirs are released all at once when the rains are heavy and without warning, leaving all those downstream in dire circumstances. CCP official accounts of the damage accrued and number of fatalities are always greatly minimized, if they are reported at all.)

"A rare and severe flood struck Ningming County in Chongzuo City, Guangxi Province, near the China-Vietnam border, on August 23. Local residents said the water rose suddenly, reaching more than 10 feet deep in less than an hour. Floodwaters have now reached the second floor of some homes, leaving residents without time to move belongings or prepare supplies. With water and power cut off, many families with elderly people and children say they have been left to fend for themselves. "
