I think the speed of this wave front is around 300 nautical miles per hour, or 345 miles per hour, or 555 kilometers per hour.


Workings.

This chart shows the estimated position of the wave at Papua New Guinea at + 6 hours and NE Australia at +9 hours.

The change in longitude between PNG and NE Australia is 15 degrees x 60 = 900 nautical miles.

The time taken is 3 hours or 180 minutes.

Therefore 900 nautical miles / 3 hrs = 300 nautical miles per hour, or 345 miles per hour, or 555 kilometers per hour.

NB Estimate only, much depends on the integrity of the chart and positioning.



PS. Teaks, Remember we discussed scale of the chart. Look at the difference in distance between the equator and 30 south and between 30 south and 60 south. The scale is increasing but these figures are based on the equator where scale and speed are accurate.

12.40am: A state of emergency has been declared at the nuclear power plant in ***ushima after its cooling system failed.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano says the plant developed a mechanical failure in the system needed to cool the reactor after it was shut down in Friday's earthquake.

He said the measure was a precaution and there was no radiation leak at the ***ushima No. 1 power plant. He said the facility was not in immediate danger.

I'm outside my house thats an old house... with my p.c. and stuff. Everyone's out on the streets.. it lasted for well over 2 mins.. like wide waving. Me and the misses were huddling in the street being thrown off our feet from time to time.

The pictures that have just shown are unbelievable of the 1st Tsunami wave and so many more waves coming.. are you guys getting the pictures?

Now I can feel the winds coming from the 1st waves... I feel so sorry for everyone at the coast, .. It's horrible.

the flooding footage on the news looks pretty massive, ships are being washed away!

These videos are posted on you tube as being uploaded in 2009 ( I see that's on the top one) and 2010.

I'm pointing this out for people like me who don't always read what's in front of their faces and make assumptions.

According to something I read yesterday Japan gets about 20% of the world's earthquakes.
(I got that from mainstream news - so don't know how true it is - but having watched the calmness of the people during the one yesterday they seem to be fairly used to them.)
