Default The dark side of Hollywood; 60's Laurel Canyon "dead" crowd, and a new book on the subject

    only if one is interested;

    I've followed David McGowan's research on this subject ever since I became aware of it; his website is www.davesweb.cn.host.com but I first became aware of his research on sott.net;

David McGowan's book is "Weird Scenes Inside the Canyon" (available at least so far on Amazon) and deals with research behind the SPATE of unexplainable deaths of young recording/film artists during the 60's/early 70's, all living at the time in Laurel Canyon (like start with Sharon Tate)-

make of the info what you will; but I think all of this was for real (are we to presume present-day Hollywood is any different?); obviously no recent murders but maybe present-day players realize they must play the game...

I read several chapters that were available online. It was interesting, particularly if you have an interest in the music scene of the 60s and 70s.

Any place you have high potency people, with large levels of energies, in any given direction..integrating with one another in one small area, you are going to get peak occurrences happening all in the one spot. They each bring their baggage and self to the given spot.

Like a gathering of gunfighters, or explosive experts, or madmen......something is guaranteed to happen. And if the influx is constant, over a given time, then there will be many peak or sharp moments, over that given time. As natural as the day is long.

This is not an attempt to explain it away, as there is no need to explain it away. Many things may be found in that mix, but the fact that such a varied crew would have a nexus point and many things happen in that nexus point - needs no explanation.

Having had a strong interest in music & having started college in 1967 I read all of McGowan's articles on his web site. I agree with him that Papa John Philips & Frank Zappa were probably in on the conspiracy to promote the agenda of TPTB but I think he over reaches to link Neil Young,& Steven Stills into it...

I have read his new book and the new information not on his site is about Punk & New Wave.....McGowan points out the Miles Copland's various record labels signed
more than half of these bands...& Stewart Copland was the drummer & founder of The Police. Their father was British Intelligence MI 6 or whatever..

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stewart_Copeland

There is no doubt in my mind that the whole "hippie" movement was started in LA
by CIA operatives . I would suggest anyone interested to read that chapter on his site.

Odd enough, Charlie Sheen comes to mind, he's behaves like an doped up, snorting, drinking, whoring, mischievous idiot (probably for some very valid reasons), but he's definitely not stupid( at all), that would be an interesting guy to get an insider view from.

The general consensus is that the hippie movement started in San Francisco with the Merry Pranksters and the Acid Tests and Haight/Ashbury. If you don't know that, I'm afraid everything else you think about the subject is rather invalidated.

I second this, and I am quite knowledgeable about the genesis of the 'hippies', having 'discovered' the Grateful Dead in the early 70's and traced back their origin story, etc. Take the San Fran scene as it existed in early-mid 60s', add psychedelics, and voila.

The CIA LSD experiments on the public, as written about and narrated on tape as it was happening by Ken Kesey and other sources, did help kick off the hippies but it was not in LA, which always had a much darker music vibe than that in the early hippie days Summer of Love and before.

You can actually hear a recording of Ken Kesey narrating his first (I recall) LSD trip as it happened, admisistered at a hospital where the CIA experiments were in progress.
I don't believe anything, but I have many suspicions. - Robert Anton Wilson

The 1960's Counterculture Was Controlled from the Top, with Jay Dyer
    Buck Johnson - Premiered Oct 4, 2023

My guest this week is Jay Dyer. Jay runs one of the largest podcasts in our space as well as being the author of "Esoteric Hollywood" volumes one and two. He is known for his deep analysis of Hollywood, geopolitics, and culture. His graduate work focused on psychological warfare and film. In this episode, Jay and I get into the non-organic, controlled-from-the-top nature of the 1960's "counterculture" that so many people still think was a grassroots freedom expression. Jay discusses the multiple figures that had CIA ties, military intelligence ties, elite global ties, and so on. From Hollywood to LSD to the music business and from Laurel Canyon in Los Angeles to the Haight Ashbury scene in San Francisco, much of the movement was steered from the top

    • Evan Rachel Wood: A Wolf in Wolf's Clothing:

Evan Rachel Wood has been through it. The abuse. The smear campaigns. The legal battles. The silencing. And she came out the other side still talking. We sat down shortly after she watched the latest cut of Narcissist's Playbook, my documentary film that she is featured in, and we didn't hold back.

The conversation covers how narcissistic abuse actually works at a mechanical level: love bombing, grooming, isolation, gaslighting, and why it doesn't just happen to vulnerable or naive people. It happens because these tactics are designed to hack the human mind, and once you know how to do that, it is extraordinarily dangerous in the wrong hands.

From there we get into the cult-like dynamics that form around narcissistic personalities: the flying monkeys, the loyalty tests, the fawning, and why the people closest to a narcissist will do their bidding just to stay in favor, including going after the very survivors who speak out.

Evan takes us inside the Phoenix Act: what it actually took to change the statute of limitations for domestic violence crimes in California, why the legal system is structurally set up to protect abusers, and what she heard directly from the DA's office that says everything about where we are. She also gets into the smear campaigns, the death threats, the legal weaponization, and the surreal experience of watching other women, including some survivors, be used against her.

There's a hard look at what it means that a film like Narcissist's Playbook has to go around the entire industry to reach people, and what that tells you about the institutions we've been taught to trust. And then there's the part that will hit closest to home for a lot of people: recovery. What it actually takes to get your self-trust back. To find your intuition again. To know the difference between anxiety, paranoia, and a real deep knowing. And what it feels like to finally be able to breathe.

This is less of an interview and more of a conversation between two people who have both been through it, and who are done pretending the world isn't what it is. Narcissist's Playbook is available at narcissistsplaybook.com

Actress Hayden Panettiere has passed away at the age of just 36 — and the circumstances surrounding her death remain shrouded in mystery for now. No official cause of death, no explanation, nothing. What is known, however, makes the situation all the more remarkable: only a few months ago, the American actress made a series of devastating revelations about the dark sides of Hollywood in a podcast .
    • From child star to face of Heroes
Panettiere began her career at a very young age and worked her way up to become one of the more recognizable faces in the American television world. The general public came to know her as Claire Bennett in the superhero series Heroes , which attracted millions of viewers between 2006 and 2010. She also starred in the 2005 Disney film Ice Princess , alongside Michelle Trachtenberg. More roles followed, but also a private life full of turbulence that left its mark.

    • Revelations in a podcast you won't soon forget
Shortly before her death, Panettiere appeared on the Jay Shetty Podcast , where she spoke candidly about her memoirs. What she described is downright shocking — although it will hardly come as a surprise to anyone who knows the workings of Hollywood from the inside. In the book, and during the podcast conversation, she recounted how, at the age of 18, she was taken onto a boat by someone she trusted—someone she saw as a protector. She was led to a small room where a 'very famous' man lay waiting, naked in bed, as if this were the most normal state of affairs. The intention was clear: she had to perform sexual acts. Panettiere refused. She described how something shifted inside her—an instinct, an inner strength—and that she hid wherever she could on that ship. Running away was not an option: she was literally in the middle of the sea. And no one on board, she soon realized, would have even the slightest sympathy for her situation. For them, this was simply business as usual.

    • Hollywood as a predator system
What Panettiere described is no isolated incident. It is a pattern. A system. Young people—often women—are ushered into the entertainment industry with promises of fame and success, and then systematically exposed to powerful men who use their position to cross boundaries. The names of those men remain carefully out of sight. The victims bear the scars. It is telling that Hayden Panettiere only dared to speak openly about what happened to her at age 18 at the age of 36, through her memoirs. For nearly two decades, this remained hidden. How many similar stories are never told?

    • A striking parallel: Michelle Trachtenberg
It is impossible to write about the passing of Hayden Panettiere without referring to another name: Michelle Trachtenberg. The two starred together in Ice Princess and thus shared a part of their career within the Disney machine — an environment that has frequently been linked to inappropriate behavior towards young actors. Trachtenberg passed away suddenly and unexpectedly last year at the age of 36, also without a clear cause of death being communicated initially. Two women, both raised in Hollywood, both died at a young age, both with a past that was less rosy than their glamorous image suggested.

This was a different twist on the Panettiere death. Is it all just another distraction? She was deep in the Hollywood cult since she was a child. How do we ever really trust anything an actor/actress says? Maybe, in reality, they're always acting and life itself is the movie they've been cast in by their handlers. How could we tell?

And this came as a minor shock. Somewhere deep inside I think I knew, but still came as a shock. Hollywood's been a cancer from the start.

The "casting couch" has always been part of Hollywood lore - even when I was a little girl in the 50s there were rumours. My view is that if you know that's part of the deal, you want fame at all costs and are prepared to do whatever it takes then it's part of the job/agreement. That surely has to cross your mind if a director/producer invites you up to his hotel room?

But where I draw the line is with children and even today there seems to be no protection for them other than having their mother with them 24/7.

I recently watched this interview with Charles Manson from 11 years after being incarcerated and thought he came off as a contemplative deep thinker, despite his lack of formal education (maybe a good thing?) He covers a lot of the same issues we examine here on the forum, and many of his words still ring true today, especially his views on authority, the media, and politics: “The people that you let run your lives aren’t very nice. The people that govern you, the people that tell you what to do, aren’t good people.”

And it reminded me of what others had said about him in Weird Scenes Inside the Canyon. Most appeared to view him as a talented singer/songwriter/guitarist as well as some kind of poet/philosopher. Neil Young was particularly impressed with Manson. After hearing him recording some tracks in Brian Wilson’s home studio, he replied, “He had this kind of music that nobody else was doing. I thought he really had something crazy, something great. He was like a living poet.” Charlie also impressed Terry Melcher, the Byrds’ first producer and a major force in sculpting the Laurel Canyon music scene. Melcher also recorded Manson, finding him to be a much more amicable character than David Crosby. The Beach Boys even allegedly stole one of Manson’s songs titled, “Cease To Exist,” and changed it to “Never Learn Not To Love” which was the B-side of their single, “Bluebirds Over the Mountain,” released in 1968.

David McGowan portrays many of the well-known musicians in the late 60’s music scene as being hacks who couldn’t play their instruments with any proficiency. The fact that Neil Young was impressed with Manson’s talent as a singer/songwriter/guitarist speaks volumes as to his actual talent as a musician, at least to me. And the fact that the CIA had its grips on not only Hollywood, with their secret movie studio in the hills above Laurel Canyon, but also the music industry, it’s a sure bet that someone like Charles Manson, hanging out with the brightest recording artists of that day, would be on their radar.

Tom O’neill appears to be a leading authority on the Manson murders but in the interviews I’ve seen he refrains from coming to any conclusions and ultimately leaves one with more questions than answers. I'll be honest, I know very little on this subject and should probably read his 2019 book, Chaos: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties, https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/43015073-chaos,and would appreciate hearing anyone else’s thoughts. But listening to Manson’s words in the interview, I can’t help but think that he was targeted and framed in some nefarious way by the authorities who wanted to put an end to the revolutionary ideas that were taking place in the hippy movement in the late 60’s, which oddly enough they brought about themselves with their drug experimentation on the people, which Manson, himself, loosely alludes to in his interview. Researching all references to Manson in the book, I came across these intriguing details concerning an area in Rustic Canyon, roughly 9 miles west of Laurel Canyon, that Manson and Family lived a short walk from in the summer of ‘68.

“If one knows where to look, there is a narrow concrete stairway that is accessible from the fire road. That stairway descends down to the floor of the canyon, and it is a very, very long descent. Five hundred and twelve steps long, to be exact. As one makes the descent, this stairway, which seems to go on forever, seems wildly out of place. With time to kill on the way down, one may find oneself pondering how many man-hours it took to set forms for 512 poured concrete steps, and how truckloads of concrete were poured out here in the middle of nowhere.

Reaching the canyon floor, one finds that, though the native flora has struggled mightily to reclaim the land, remnants of a past civilization can be seen everywhere. Some structures remain largely intact - a nearly 400,000 gallon, spring-fed reservoir serving a sophisticated potable water system; a concrete-walled structure that once housed twin electrical generators capable of lighting a small town; more concrete stairways, hundreds of steps long, each snaking its way up the canyon walls; weathered livestock stables; professionally graded and paved roads; countless stone retaining walls; an incinerator; concrete foundations and skeletal remains of former dwellings; the rusting carcass of a Mansonesque VW bus; and, at the former entrance, an imposing set of electronically controlled, wrought iron security gates.

It is the kind of place that seems tailor-made for Charlie and his Family - remote and secluded, yet accessible by the Family’s custom-built dune buggies; with just enough crumbling infrastructure to provide rudimentary shelter for the clan; and with elaborate security provisions, including sentry positions and a formerly electrified fence completely encircling the fifty-acre compound (as well as, by some reports, an underground tunnel complex). And it was located just a short hike up the canyon from the place that Charlie Manson called home in the summer of 1968.

While exploring this place, obvious questions begin to come to mind: Who developed this remote portion of the canyon, in what feels like the middle of nowhere? The goal appears to have been to create a hidden and completely self-sustaining community, and an extraordinary amount of money was invested in infrastructure development… but why?

Very few Angelenos know of the curious ruins in Rustic Canyon, and fewer still know the history of those ruins. Every now and then though, a local reporter will pay a visit and the story will make a one-time appearance in a local publication, briefly casting some light on a bit of the hidden history of Los Angeles… In September, 2005, Cecelia Rasmussen of the Los Angeles Times added a few details to the story: “Southern California has been the cradle to many odd cults, credos, utopias and dystopias. Among the most mysterious are the ruins of a Rustic Canyon enclave once known as Murphy Ranch… on [Rustic Canyon’s] secluded and woodsy floor stand the eerily burned-out and graffiti-scarred remains of concrete and steel structures, underground tunnels and stairways leading from the top of the canyon to the bottom… Behind the locked and rusted wrought iron entrance gates and flagstone wall stand the traces of a small community that had the capacity to grow its own food, generate its own electricity and dam its own water… The hillsides were terraced with 3,000 nut, citrus, fruit and olive trees, and fitted with water pipes, sprinklers and an elaborate greenhouse. A high barbed-wire fence discouraged intruders… research indicates that it could have been home to up to forty local Nazis from about 1933 to 1945… armed guards patrolled the canyon dressed in the uniform worn by Silver Shirts, a paramilitary group modeled after Hitler’s brownshirts… A man known through oral histories only as ‘Herr Schmidt’ supposedly ruled the place and claimed to possess metaphysical powers.”

Herr Schmidt, needless to say, was the gentleman whose spell Winona Stephens fell under. According to Marc Norman, Schmidt “convinced her that the coming world war would be won by Germany, that the United States would collapse into years of violent anarchy and that the chosen few (read: the Stephenses, the certain gentleman and other true believers) would need a tight spot in which to hole up, self-sufficient, until the fire storm had passed. Then they could emerge not only intact but, thanks to the superiority of their politics, rulers of the anthill and, not incidentally, the origin of its new population.”

    Sound familiar?

Murphy Ranch also reportedly featured a 20,000 gallon diesel fuel tank, livestock stables, and dairy and butchering facilities. Along both sides of the compound “rise eight crumbling, narrow stairways of at least 500 steps each,” as the LA Times noted. Those stairways apparently led to sentry positions high on the canyon walls (for the record, they are not actually crumbling, though most are overgrown with impenetrable vegetation). During Murphy Ranch’s years of operation, nearby residents reportedly complained of late-night military exercises and the sounds of live gunfire echoing through the canyons.”

It all just reeks as a deep CIA stronghold, not just that compound with its bunkers and underground tunnels but Hollywood and the industry of fame in general, a fabricated world they created to clandestinely frame individuals in order to weave their twisted narrative, and that compound was built before the CIA's creation and Project Paperclip. Imagine what crazy stories the CIA/Hollywood could fabricate today after that many decades of practice and unlimited resources at their disposal. It really makes me question everything I see on the screen, and that's even before you introduce AI!
