A solitary leopard came across a pair of foraging honey badgers. Sensing the impending danger, the badgers suddenly spun around and launched a ferocious counter-charge straight at the cat. The startled leopard scrambled backwards and quickly realised that this was not the easy meal it first thought.

I see an intelligent dog sensing the ram's intention and inserted himself into the scene as a strong presence, (almost like the appearance of a policeman might diffuse an otherwise tense confrontation). Also indicative of paternal instinct without escalation.

Stem cells make up only a tiny percentage of human bodies and our stem cells degrade overtime. That's why we age but a hydra can make near perfect copies of its stem cells basically forever.

Fishers caught a bright orange shark off Costa Rica that had albinism, alongside the species' first scientifically documented case of an extremely rare condition called xanthism.



A first-of-its-kind bright orange shark with white eyes has been caught and released in the Caribbean, a new study reveals.

The nurse shark (Ginglymostoma cirratum) had a mysterious condition called xanthism, or xanthochroism, which increases yellow pigmentation in the skin. Researchers have recorded xanthism in several animals, but this is the first definitive case of a nurse shark with the trait. The shark also appears to have albinism, making it even more unusual.

Sports fishers discovered the shark by chance off the east coast of Costa Rica in 2024. Garvin Watson, owner of the Parismina Domus Dei hotel in the village of Parismina, reeled in the shark, which was around 6.6 feet (2 meters) long and swimming 120 feet (37 m) below the surface.

"We could not believe what we had in front of our eyes," Watson told Live Science in an email.

"That orange shark shining with the sunlight was something out of the ordinary," he said. "We did not know that it was going to be a discovery worldwide, recognized by all the biologists of the world."

The fishers photographed the shark, then removed the hook from its mouth and released it back into the Caribbean Sea. Researchers described the event and its significance in a new study published Aug. 1 in the journal Marine Biodiversity.

I took this picture yesterday, because this guy is such a fine specimen. I know he is a huge pest of tomato plants, and found him on my hot pepper plant, but my garden has pretty much bit the dust with this drought and intense heat wave we are in at the moment. I did move him over to a "sacrificial tomato plant" that the deers destroyed, as there still may be a few peppers starting.

He sure reminds me of the hookah smoking caterpillar!

First-ever Footage of a Rare Deep-sea Squid in the Northeastern Pacific





A rare and beautiful squid has been filmed haunting the northeastern Pacific Ocean for the first time.

Researchers spotted the bigfin squid (Magnapinna) via remote video while using an uncrewed submersible to explore underwater mountains, known as seamounts, at a depth of more than 10,000 feet (3,000 meters) off the coast of California.

The footage, captured Aug. 7, represents the first confirmed live observation of a bigfin squid in the northeastern Pacific, according to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), whose scientists made the discovery with collaborators from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Bigfin squid are the deepest-dwelling known squid and have been found more than 20,000 feet (6,000 m) below the surface. Most of the animals' total length comes from their tentacles and arms, which can be 20 times longer than their bodies. The individual in the video was about 4.1 feet (1.25 m) long, including body, tentacles and arms, according to MBARI.

The last time MBARI researchers encountered a bigfin squid was off Hawaii in 2001.

At first I thought this may have been AI buit it is real.  The phenomenon, known as lachryphagy (tear-feeding), involves butterflies sipping the salty tears of turtles and other reptiles to obtain sodium, a nutrient scarce in their typical Amazonian diet. 

• The behavior was famously documented by entomologist Phil Torres in the Peruvian Amazon, capturing multiple butterfly species feeding on basking turtles. 
• While some social media posts suggest a mutualistic relationship where turtles get their eyes cleaned, experts like Dr. Andrew Mitchell classify it as commensalism, where the butterflies benefit and the turtles are largely unaffected. 
• The turtles, such as the yellow-spotted sideneck turtle, often cannot retract their heads into their shells, making them passive targets for the persistent insects.

Springtails (class Collembola) are tiny, wingless hexapods that are technically not insects, though they share six legs and an insect-like appearance. Measuring between 0.02 to 0.4 inches, these soft-bodied arthropods are primarily detritivores that feed on decaying organic matter, fungi, and algae, playing a vital role in soil health.

They are best known for their ability to jump several inches high using a forked abdominal appendage called the furcula. While they often invade homes in large numbers seeking moisture, they are harmless to humans and pets as they do not bite, sting, or transmit disease. My reaction is a little off-topic on this thread. But I feel I have to say that in so many ways that's a terribly ironic commentary on our relationship with the ever-suffering natural world around us.

I'm happy that a bird managed to make a nest from what it could find, but unmentioned here is that that bird's life very likely ended when the bomb destroyed the tree in which it had so carefully built its nest.

In all the millions of words written and spoken about this war and others, I've rarely found anyone at all who mentions or even appears to think about the impact of war and relentless high explosive on all the other living things around.

We are indeed steadily destroying this very beautiful world. The author of the tweet who wrote "We are truly living in the worst timeline" was correct.
