A strong magnitude 6.6 earthquake has struck beneath the ocean near New Caledonia’s Loyalty Islands, with the epicentre around 68 km east-northeast of Tadine at a depth of 17.1 km.

The quake hit at 21:23 UTC in one of the most active seismic zones in the southwest Pacific. Tsunami monitoring and aftershock activity are now being watched closely.
