How can you protect your hips?
Nutrition. What benefits our bodies is not what most people, outside of still "primitive" tribes and villages, eat.

I do not worry about falling, even though I will turn 80 next year. I do fall more often, thanks in part to the considerable damage done to my ears (hearing and balance) by g*d d*mn "silver" (aka half mercury) fillings a half century ago, to repair teeth destroyed by a "Western" diet. The first ten years of my life, on my father's old fashioned dairy farm, in a family and community that had changed its ways and diet little in 200 years, I had perfect teeth, and didn't even own a toothbrush. Weston Price saw the same thing, in many places he visited, a century ago. Then we moved into town and went to store bought food. I became a profit center for dentists, for a half century.

    {snip}

Food is my medicine, and I am my doctor. I have invested zero dollars and zero seconds of my time in conventional medicine for about 20 years now. I probably could have gotten official medical diagnoses for diabetes, cancer, hyper-tension, obesity, Alzheimer's, foot ulcers that could have led to amputations, and various organ failures sometime over the last 20 years ... all cured by continuing to fiddle with my diet.
Same here. The last time I had a medical checkup was in 2002. No medications, no shots. Though, I do go for yearly dental checks and ophthalmologist appointments. In two weeks, I'm scheduled for cataract surgery.

Being a New Englander, I do worry about falling, especially in the winter. Two winters ago, my feet went right out from under me. Luckily, after 37+ years of Tai Chi, my body seemed to know what to do and automatically went into self-protection mode. I bounced onto my side, and thankfully nothing serious happened. Although, my arm still lets me know about it in certain positions.

It was definitely a wake-up call about how quickly things can happen. It reminded me that staying healthy isn't just about diet. For me, maintaining balance and muscle strength, and keeping my bones strong are just as important.

I helped my spouse recover from the 2 hip replacements and they send you home with a Breg Ice Cube machine for pain relief and to reduce any swelling (it is a pump that circulates ice water through a pad you can wrap around the hip). So I helped reload the ice a couple of times a day for about 2 weeks. It made it easier by simply freezing 12 of those small short 8 oz water bottles (using 6 at a time, swapping out frozen ones).
He was diligent with his PT exercises and only needed the walker for the first 10 days, got off the pain meds after about 4-5 days and stuck with the Tylenol.
Every one I know that has had hip replacement came out with much improved quality of life after healing.
Bless you for helping your sister!

I have a long-term knee joint problem that the Doc says will need replacement in a few years
As regards joint problems, they are all caused by inflammation, which is usually caused by something you ate such as sugar or carbohydrates in general, or a prescribed "medicine". The damage can often be reversed by avoiding the cause and by eating appropriately, with supplements as appropriate.

Regarding the knee problem, you might find it helpful to spray the knee with 70% DMSO and then, a few minutes later, apply castor oil. Don't expect immediate pain relief; it will take months.

Update - Everything went very smoothly for my sister. They sure have it down to a mass production type thing these days!
The doctor had a very poor bedside manner, but was very experienced in this type of surgery, which I suppose is what counts. Like I said - the experience was almost like an assembly line.

She stayed only 1 night in a hospital room, and they had her on her feet the same day of the surgery. I picked her up and helped her into my place, where she enjoyed being babied for a week - being cooked for, watching whatever shows she wanted, etc. haha. I already had all the handicapped aids she needed up in my shed, from past things with my husband and others, so we were all set. She felt confident enough to go home after a week, and was anxious to be back with her 2 dogs. She is keen to get back to driving after her follow-up visit coming up, and pleased that her deep pain has faded and she is only feeling the surgery pain as her muscles adjust.

So overall, all is A-ok as far as I can tell to date. Yay! And thanks everyone for the good wishes and advise.

That is most wonderful news about your sister's recovery. She is so lucky to have an experienced caring sister like you and I can imagine her dogs joy when she got home, soon to be able to take them on walks again

Greetings Sue… been a number of years since last commented anything here. In fact, now being in the same situation, as your sister, of confronting total hip joint replacement.

This thread has given great support, been helpful personally. It’s important to me to extend gratitude to all for the helpful information provided. My jaw dropped when first seeing this title. As it’s been an entire drama with lots of life force to get to the point of surgery in my case.
I’m so glad to hear the report that your little sister has gone on to recover so well. And that she has reunited with her pups!

My surgery is scheduled and at the end of next month. While I am not by any means on my own in this matter, it’s still scary to be sure.

Finally, as is how I feel often, thank you to the group as a whole for talking about a topic and generating kindness.
