Some tips for living well in cold climates, assuming nature still lives after the aproaching micronova. Birch and Fir and Willow and other trees, critters that walk and swim, fellows who can lend hands or give tips/instruction.

Am sure that this chan is real, not AI, at least in construction and narration. L = 33:51.

10 Ojibwe Survival Hacks From the Northern Forests

    Wild West Focus

    Aug 31, 2026

Quote Deep in the northern forests of what is now Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Ontario, the Ojibwe — who call themselves Anishinaabeg, the Original People — built one of the most sophisticated cold-weather survival systems any human culture has ever developed. They lived through winters that would kill an unprepared modern hiker in forty-eight hours, using nothing but what the forest gave them. Birch bark. Cedar. Chaga. Wild rice. Snowshoes woven from ash and rawhide.

In this video, we walk through ten of those survival skills, from the tree that gave them everything to the medicine tradition that kept their families healthy through six months of subzero winter. Along the way, we tell the story of a hunter named Bezhig, a reconstructed figure drawn from documented Anishinaabe practices of the late eighteen hundreds, whose small fire in the snow stands in for the thousands of unnamed people whose knowledge kept a whole civilization alive in a country that never should have been habitable.

Even the Eggs Aren’t Real Anymore
It’s getting harder and harder every year to know what you’re actually eating.

Biotech companies like The Every Company are creating synthetic, lab-grown proteins that are marketed as food.

OvoPro is their “egg” protein that is now sold in Target, Walmart and restaurants.

It’s created by printing a copy of a chicken gene, inserting it into yeast, and merging it with the yeast’s DNA.

    AI Summary and Bullets:

Precision-fermented “egg” protein is real, but it is not a laboratory-grown chicken egg. Companies such as The EVERY Company use genetically engineered yeast to produce ovalbumin, a major protein naturally found in egg whites, which can then be used as an animal-free ingredient in foods. EVERY has confirmed that OvoPro is entering mainstream food distribution, including products sold through Walmart and Target, although publicly identifying the specific finished products is difficult. If you want to avoid it, the key is to read ingredient labels rather than assume every “egg” ingredient is lab-produced.
    • 🥚 OvoPro is not a whole egg; it is an egg-white protein.
    • 🧫 It is made using precision fermentation, rather than chickens.
    • 🧬 Scientists introduce the genetic instructions for egg protein into yeast.
    • 🧪 The engineered yeast produces ovalbumin, which is then harvested and purified.
    • 🌱 The resulting ingredient is described as animal-free/vegan because no chickens are required to produce it.
    • ⚠️ Despite being animal-free, it can still matter to people with egg allergies, because the protein resembles conventional egg protein.
    • 🛒 EVERY has said OvoPro-containing products are being sold through Walmart and Target, but it has not provided a comprehensive public SKU list.
    • 🔎 Look for labels such as “egg white protein (from fermentation),” “egg white protein (from yeast),” “animal-free egg white protein,” or “OvoPro.”
    • ⚠️ “Ovalbumin” alone isn't necessarily proof that an ingredient is precision-fermented; it can also refer to conventional egg-derived protein.
    • 🐔 Ordinary terms such as “egg white,” “dried egg white,” or “powdered egg white” generally indicate conventional chicken-derived egg unless the label specifies otherwise.

An interesting nugget of what I can readily believe is truth.

Kids aged 8—12 were polled in the US and China about what they'd most aspire to be as an adult.

    USA:
    1. Social Media Influencer.
    2. Teacher.
    3. Athlete.
(Astronaut was the least popular choice.)
    China:

No sound to this clip but amazing dental work. Who would have thought you could crown a lion's tooth? The cost for domestic cats for this procedure is prohibitive (round about £4,000)

In 1999, at an altitude of over 6,700 meters on the slopes of a volcano in the Andes cordillera, a team of archaeologists digs through snow and frozen rock. Suddenly, in a cavity within the mountain, they freeze: a young girl is sitting there, her head gently tilted toward her torso, her arms crossed over her knees. Her black hair is still perfectly braided, and her skin appears intact. That evening, as they gaze upon this face preserved from the ravages of time, no one yet knows that science will succeed in reading every day of her past life like an open book.

She has been called the Llullaillaco Maiden.

Around 15 years old at the time of her death, this teenager was chosen by the Inca Empire for the sacred Capacocha ceremony. For the mountain people, it was not merely a sacrifice, but the ultimate offering to the deities to ensure the kingdom's protection.

For over 500 years, the mountain's extreme cold has preserved every detail of her body.

She wears a traditional coat fastened with a silver pin, a woven belt around her waist, and traces of red pigment still adorn her cheeks. Around her mouth, tiny fragments of coca leaves remain stuck.

But the true mystery was hidden in her long braided hair.

Years later, by analyzing strand by strand the chemical composition of her hair, researchers from the University of Bradford succeed in reconstructing the last two years of her life.

Thanks to the molecules trapped in her hair, the story unfolds.

One year before her death, her diet changes abruptly: she begins eating meat and corn, a regimen reserved for nobles.
In her final six months, her consumption of coca leaves increases dramatically.
In the last weeks, traces of corn alcohol skyrocket.

The priests had prepared her gently. On the day of the journey to the icy summit, dazed by coca and alcohol, the teenager simply fell asleep in her stone niche under the effects of the extreme cold, with no trace of violence on her body.

But a discovery at the bottom of her tomb left the researchers stunned.

Next to the young girl was a small cloth bag containing a lock of cut hair. DNA analysis revealed that it was her own hair, cut exactly six months before her death during a separation ceremony. Someone had precious kept this memento, carried it all the way to the mountain's peak, and placed it by her side for eternity.

She remained asleep for five centuries, a silent witness to a vanished world where people gave what they held most dear to touch the heavens.

There are stories that time cannot erase, and which continue to speak to us across the ages.

If this fascinating and poignant discovery has moved you, share it with those around you. Human memory sometimes holds incredible secrets at the top of the world.

Let say you have a cold. Cold is one of the things you feel when you've got a cold, and you feel chills, and you want to wrap up, you wanna have a hot bath.

All that in the old language meant that you were cold and what you needed to do was to heat up.

This video is suited better to the Hodgepodge thread but wanted to get Bill's opinion as an ex pupil/teacher at Public School as to whether this set-up was followed there?

I wouldn't say I've never been to a formal dinner with loads of cutlery, but years ago when corporate companies would have huge dinner dances at Christmas. These days, I think I'm right in saying, we don't bother with this etiquette although the elites clearly still do. . . I once asked a baronness what in particular separated the classes at the dinner table, thinking it was holding a knife like a pen, but she said it was coffee, always to be taken without milk, which labelled the uppers from the lowers. A load of cobblers really but quite interesting nevertheless. . . .

Ha. I watched the whole thing with immense interest. (One comment I have to make, though, is that he never explained how one should eat spaghetti. )

I knew everything he discussed, though I don't know how I know: I suspect it was all from my parents — maybe when we were invited to others' houses to eat when I was very young. I went to public school myself (for US readers, British 'public school' = private school, don't ask me why), but there was nothing about that there, nor when I taught for a year at Britain's most prestigious public school in my early 20s.

But I have to share a story, which it's possible a few members may have heard before.

Back in 2010 I was the personal house guest of a Middle Eastern Royal Princess for 6 straight weeks. That in itself is a long story (she was like something out of a Disney movie), and we had a really great time as she was an avid Project Camelot follower and supporter.

She asked me to invite along several others in the alternative community whom she wanted to meet, including David Icke and Jordan Maxwell, and so we all hung out together for a while — including of course at the Royal Dinner Table.

(David played along admirably. I'd emailed him to say: "Look, I can't tell you why, and you just have to trust me, but get on a plane and I'll meet you at the airport tomorrow." He turned up with a big smile, delighted to be enjoying the mystery.)

At the dinner table, even though I knew all the etiquette perfectly described in the video, I watched our Royal Host super-carefully at first to ensure I always did the right thing.

I never took a single photo (she asked me please not to), but the meals were quite something else: numerous wonderful courses, served by a team of butlers in suits and bow ties, with the most exquisite desserts: all the kind of thing one might have paid a thousand pounds for at the Ritz Carlton.

And it was like that night after night. I'm VERY happy to say that I never disgraced myself once — and it was all one of the many remarkable experiences I've had in this long life.

(One comment I have to make, though, is that he never explained how one should eat spaghetti. )
    O
I knew everything he discussed, though I don't know how I know: I suspect it was all from my parents — maybe when we were invited to others' houses to eat when I was very young. I went to public school myself (for US readers, British 'public school' = private school, don't ask me why), but there was nothing about that there, nor when I taught for a year at Britain's most prestigious public school in my early 20s.

But I have to share a story, which it's possible a few members may have heard before.

Back in 2010 I was the personal house guest of a Middle Eastern Royal Princess for 6 straight weeks. That in itself is a long story (she was like something out of a Disney movie), and we had a really great time as she was an avid Project Camelot follower and supporter.
    .
    .
    .
And it was like that night after night. I'm VERY happy to say that I never disgraced myself once — and it was all one of the many remarkable experiences I've had in this long life.

Bill’s comment about eating spaghetti is what drew me to respond, and I did my homework by watching the vid.

Thank you Grapevine, for this peek into uppity culture. Am now subbed to the chan, and have it on tap, and feel some kind of morbid curiosity about the ways of elites. My guess is that in some life or lives past, I’ve been one of those presumptuous elites. Maybe not a royal, but in some position of authority, lording it over underclasses.

Bill, you really must not leave us wondering about what else you experienced in that six week visit. Pretty please?

The coolest way I ever saw spaghetti eaten, was by a young woman hitchhiker I brought from Edmonton AB to Vancouver BC (back when I was young too). 2 day drive, overnight at a national-chain youth hostel, we made spaghetti in the communal kitchen. She surprised the heck out of me, by twirling her fork a bit and then lifting an 8ish inch long portion carefully above her as she leaned back on a couch. Straight down, measured and graceful, into her upturned mouth. I fell in love (lasted a month, never was her boyfriend).

Here’s my nugget related to this talk of table ways, something my grandfather told about how his dad (farmer) drank tea. Said he “saucered” it, meaning poured his sips from the cup into the saucer and drank it from there. Idea was that that cooled the tea enough to suit him.

I have used that idea when at my local Tim Hortons coffee shop, using the plastic cup-lid to scoop sips of hot coffee, help my dunked bits of old-fashioned-plain donut go down nicely. Third of the cup does that, then the rest goes outside with a smoke or two, for bird watching and people-and-traffic watching. Golden mornings, being up all night (thankfully rare), sanctity from pressure of getting there and getting home on the cruiserboard. So far so good, not bragging, just thankful.

I make almost all of my non-sandwich foods to be spoonable, cut or beak it up. Break spaghetti in thirds, crush package noodles before opening the pack. My version of quality of life.
