A Report from Russia: How Close is Europe and Russia to a Wider Conflict?

This article is the product of visits to Russia I made in June and September 2026 where I met with senior Russian leaders, leading academics, and specialists in military and security issues.

There has been a spate of irresponsibly aggressive rhetoric from within Europe strongly posturing for a conflict with Russia by the end of the decade. This rhetoric comes in the context of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which is well into its fifth year, a conflict which both Europe and the United States openly acknowledge operates in the form of a proxy war between the collective West and Russia. The Russian response has been to accelerate its military efforts against Ukraine while putting NATO on notice that any effort to threaten Russian territory, and particularly the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, would see Russia responding with the full compliment of military capabilities, including nuclear weapons. The current situation in Europe today in many ways replicates the conditions that existed on the continent in the summer of 1914, where military mobilization and war preparations created a momentum that produced a war no politician was seriously looking to prosecute. The consequences of war in 1914 were a disaster for Europe; the consequences of a war today would be fatal to civilization as we know it.

We needn't be at all worried about the 'plague'. Irkutsk is thousands of miles away in a remote spot closer to Mongolia than anywhere else that a regular person could map, for reference.

This all of course timed perfectly it seems with, wait, the release of a Taylor Swift song called "Patient Zero" (well well :winks: ) on the very same day.

What's happening in Irkutsk? According to one of my friends in Ufa: not much. So let's take a closer look at who launched the website to "monitor" the infection situation in Irkutsk, and why?

First came an official statement from Rospotrebnadzor, which was spread in Russian media on October 4: an employee at an institute for combating plague in the Irkutsk region has been diagnosed with pneumonia of unknown origin. So far so good. It happens relatively often in the region bordering Eastern anthrax Mongolia.

However: On October 3, the website IrkutskLive appeared online; it is promoted as a resource for monitoring the situation in the Irkutsk region, where a death due to pulmonary plague was claimed to have occurred. The new website uses the narrative "the authorities are hiding something" and asserts without basis that the woman has died. Probably to spread anxiety among people in Russia and the rest of the world.

Its working method is characterized by maximum sensationalism and minimal objectivity. So who are these "journalists"?

🔸The website is written in English with automatic translation to Russian, hardly necessary for Russian-speaking users.

🔸As the contact party is listed FirstStrike News Ltd, but there is no information about this organization.

🔸According to data on registration of websites in the .com domain, the site was launched on October 3.

🔸It is not operated from Russia; on the website itself, Australia is mentioned in connection with the time zone where the information monitoring began and the legal framework within which the site operates.

🔸At the same time, a profile with the same name appeared on X. This account was also registered from Australia, however already in May 2026, and changed its name in October.

🔸The website reports in alarmist terms about the risk of the plague spreading from Russia to the rest of the world. It refers to articles in foreign media and Russian media classified as our Western influence organs, for example The Insider, as well as to information from WHO, the US CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and Mayo Clinic (Minnesota, USA).

🔸It tracks the number of known cases—there is still only one—and which people have been in contact with the infected; even these figures are known and unchanged; a diagram has been produced showing flight departures from Irkutsk over the past few days.

The service snaps up all mentions of the event. An example is reports in local media that mask requirements were introduced at IrkAZ "due to a suspected infection in the Irkutsk region"; the factory management acted cautiously and took measures for safety's sake, but the information was immediately spread further via various channels.

The main news headlines are adorned with a portrait of Vladimir Putin, a symbol of biological danger, and an image of "bacilli." The entire layout is in yellow and black, colors that heighten anxiety among people who remember the covid-19 "pandemic."

"Analysis material," probably produced with the help of AI, examines reports of an infection in the Irkutsk region; reports that are claimed to have been published and then deleted in order to hide important information from the public.

This suggests that someone in the West is actively exploiting the event and inflating the hysteria around a single, isolated case to create panic among the public, including foreign news consumers, and thereby undermining Russian citizens' trust in the authorities. Hybrid influence.

True, but that is assuming the story is real; it may not be, and I have my doubts. I'd prefer to wait for an official statement from Russian authorities on exactly what did, or didn't happen here. Seems some - not you - may have forgotten all too soon the phoney and transparent background story to COVID-19. At the moment this plague narrative carries with it an all too familiar odour.

Two Turkish-owned cargo vessels were hit by drones early Tuesday in Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea, about 70 nautical miles off the coast. One of them, the Alfa Watan, sank.

Zelensky said in his evening address: "Ukrainian Defense Forces conducted no operations in this area of the sea. This latest tragedy involving civilian vessels is a continuation of Russia's attempt to make the western Black Sea completely unfit for shipping. We clarified all the data with the Bulgarian side: our Navy contacted its counterparts in Bulgaria, and it has been established that this was a combined Russian attack using sea and aerial drones."

Bulgaria does not confirm this. Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov told bTV: "There are no specifics, and we cannot confirm whether they are Russian or Ukrainian."

Stoyanov said he had heard Zelensky's statement but has no evidence to back it. He added that he has his own conviction about whose drones they were, but will not voice it without wreckage or a claim of responsibility. For now, he said, such claims are "guesses and speculation."

Baza reports that a ship carrying crude oil has caught fire in the Black Sea off Sochi, sending a thick column of smoke, visible from several parts of the city.

The Liberian-flagged vessel was reportedly travelling from Novorossiysk to India and, according to MarineTraffic data cited by Baza, had been anchored near the coast for several days.

Beaches have now been temporarily closed, while residents and visitors have been advised to avoid spending time outdoors.

It's worth noting that both Russia and Ukraine restrict the publication of footage of attacks, particularly material that could reveal air-defence activity or locations and that's why the attached video has been partly blurred by BAZA.
