Supernumerary Rainbows Over New Jersey by John Entwistle

    Somewhere over the rainbow

After the remnants of Hurricane Florence passed over the Jersey Shore, New Jersey, USA in 2018, the Sun came out in one direction but something quite unusual appeared in the opposite direction: a hall of rainbows.

Over the course of the next half hour, to the delight of the photographer and his daughter, vibrant supernumerary rainbows faded in and out, with at least five captured in this featured single shot.

Supernumerary rainbows only form when falling water droplets are all nearly the same size and typically less than a millimeter across. Then, sunlight will not only reflect from inside the raindrops, but interfere, a wave phenomenon similar to ripples on a pond when a stone is thrown in. In fact, supernumerary rainbows can only be explained with waves, and their noted existence in the early 1800s was considered early evidence of light's wave nature.

The presentation is about the Mediterranean Sea being flooded 5.3 million years ago. Decades ago when they drilled the basin they found salt over a kilometer thick beneath the sediments. The analogy was you could cover France in salt two kilometers deep. They estimated the area filled and dried out some forty times. When the natural dam burst the world's oceans dropped by thirty meters. I recall from decades ago the event was classified as a belvee flood (unsure of spelling). I couldn't find any reference to that word.

The video will play in English rather than Russia if you listen to it on YouTube.

How the Atlantic Turned a Desert Into a Sea

Quote The Mediterranean basin holds within its depths one of the most massive catastrophes in Earth's history. Five and a half million years ago, a vast expanse of water was transformed into a dry, scorching basin. This astonishing geological event, best known among researchers as the Messinian Salinity Peak, radically altered the face of our entire planet. A modern scientific context and fundamental documentaries on the planet's evolution reveal a stunning picture of the total evaporation of waters and the subsequent, massive re-creation of seascapes. It all began with massive tectonic shifts, when the ancient African Plate continued its incessant northward movement, literally ramming Europe. As a result, an impassable land dam formed in the area of today's Strait of Gibraltar, blocking a natural waterway. Deprived of recharge from the Atlantic Ocean, the sea began to rapidly dry out due to high evaporation rates. The water balance was so disrupted that a colossal volume of liquid evaporated in a matter of millennia. A deep, dry basin, three kilometers below sea level, was exposed at the bottom. Atmospheric pressure in this basin increased dramatically, and air temperatures exceeded sixty degrees Celsius. In these harsh conditions, massive layers of salt up to one and a half kilometers thick precipitated. However, history took a dramatic turn. About 5,330,000 years ago, the thin barrier holding back the Atlantic Ocean's onslaught cracked under powerful hydraulic pressure. The so-called Zanclean Flood, the most massive flood in the history of the planet, began. A colossal wall of water rushed through a narrow canyon with unimaginable speed. Every day, the sea level rose by tens of meters, inundating salt deserts and transforming scorching basins back into thriving sea depths. This cataclysm literally rewrote the map of the world, altering the global salinity of the oceans, adjusting river flows, and shaping the modern climate system. By studying documentaries and geological expeditions, researchers are rethinking the power of natural forces that can change entire continents in the blink of an eye.

Scientists Say Our Solar System May Have 10 Planets After All

Astronomical designations keep changing with very recent discoveries in deep space. It seems the more we know, the more we don't.

Quote For decades, astronomers have suspected that something massive is lurking in the darkness beyond Neptune, quietly shaping the orbits of distant objects at the edge of our Solar System. Now new research and fresh observations are giving scientists more reasons to believe that Planet Nine may be real—and some studies suggest there could even be another undiscovered world hiding farther out.

Quote What happens when you fly a GoPro camera straight into the center of a tornado? FPV drone pilot Luke Bredar teamed up with professional storm chaser Ricky Forbes to capture one of the most extreme shots ever recorded—flying directly into the eye of a live tornado near Arnett, Oklahoma. This unprecedented footage shows the raw power, structure, and rotation of a twister like never before.

Nature Has Rights — The Time Has Come For The World To Recognize Them

Existing legal frameworks have not halted planetary crises. Recognizing the rights of nature could offer a different path.

Wildfires, heatwaves and unprecedented weather events are no longer breaking news, they’re our permanent backdrop. Yet again this year, we are facing the grave effects of a climate system that we have destabilized. We are watching the world experience painful and deadly climate extremes, while our collective response remains ‘too little, too late’.

Although we’re in need of hope, hope is never a plan. As a global society and as citizens of Earth, we urgently need a tangible shift in how our legal systems treat the living world. Recognizing the universal rights of Nature is the answer.

With this in mind, at this year’s United Nations General Assembly in New York City in September, the president of Panama, José Raúl Mulino, proposed recognizing the universal rights of Nature. Panama’s goal is to usher in a UN Universal Declaration of the Rights of Nature, to recognize nature as a direct ‘subject of rights’ with intrinsic value.

Towards that end, on 24 September, Panama, Tonga and Vanuatu launched the For Nature Coalition of States, with Palau and Dominica among the founding members. This is designed to build dialogue around and support for a proposed intergovernmental process to recognize the rights of Nature.

The coalition is an informal, decentralized and voluntary platform on which interested member states can exchange experiences, share perspectives and contribute to ongoing discussion and diplomatic engagement on the proposed UN Universal Declaration of the Rights of Nature, as part of the UN’s Harmony with Nature process. It complements, not replaces, formal intergovernmental negotiations in the General Assembly. Joining the coalition doesn’t imply endorsement of any specific legal framework, negotiated outcome, future instrument or text. Rather, it means taking a seat at the table to navigate our shared future on Earth.

As catastrophic climate and ecological change continues to unfold around us, it is clear that existing legal frameworks are not built to stop it, nor to adequately protect Nature. Most of the current environmental laws simply put a report, a timeline or a price in the way of the continued, long-term destruction of nature.

It is unacceptable that corporations have legal rights, but Nature largely has none.

The Nobel Prize in Physics 2026

Elusive Particles From the Universe Captured at the South Pole

40 years in the making ...
    ________

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awards the Nobel Prize in Physics 2026 to Francis Halzen, University of Wisconsin–Madison, USA.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/DeJyreORQPM/

Francis Halzen realised that ice at the South Pole could be used to track particles known as neutrinos. His vision and scientific leadership have been fundamental for the IceCube Neutrino Observatory – a cubic kilometre of ice that is equipped with light sensors. Using IceCube, researchers can capture neutrinos from extremely energy-rich processes in the distant universe.

Neutrinos are everywhere, but they do not make themselves known. They pass all the way through the Earth and through our bodies without us noticing. Very rarely, a single neutrino will interact with an atomic nucleus, which makes it possible for someone with the right equipment to discover them.

Scientists have long known that the cosmos contains natural particle accelerators, which fire out particles with energies up a million times more than can be achieved in laboratories on Earth. Much about these sources is mysterious: what are they, where are they, and what are the main processes inside them?

Neutrinos with extremely high energies are created in the same environments as other types of particles. However, unlike other particles, neutrinos reach us without changing direction or losing energy. This means they can provide information that is not available in any other way.

Francis Halzen first presented his vision for capturing neutrinos at the South Pole in 1988. When a neutrino collides with an atomic nucleus, it produces a flash of light that can be tracked by sensors in the clear glacial ice. The South Pole’s ice has many advantages, as it is free from various types of interference and the area is geologically stable, with no earthquakes. Halzen and his idea soon gained the support of other researchers and, just a few years later, preliminary testing was conducted on sensors in ice.

IceCube Neutrino Observatory - South Pole

Cosmic neutrinos with extremely high energies are very rare, so an enormous volume of ice is needed to observe an adequate number of collisions. IceCube covers an entire cubic kilometre and was finished in 2011. Researchers soon discovered the first high-energy neutrinos and, a few years later, could publish their discovery of neutrinos that must originate far outside our solar system. The search for the universe’s neutrino sources could begin in earnest.

“Francis Halzen has led an international team of researchers and engineers who have provided us with a fantastic instrument. His tenacity and scientific vision has paved the way for a new kind of astronomy,” said Mark Pearce, Chair of the Nobel Committee for Physics.

    GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH

Earth's magnetic field is about to get hit by as many as three CMEs--the first on Oct. 9th, the second and third on Oct. 11th. The series of impacts could spark category G1 (Minor) to G3 (Strong) geomagnetic storms with perfect timing for aurora photographers. The nearly-new Moon will provide inky-dark skies throughout the forecast period.

    A SOLAR TSUNAMI

Sunspot 4549 erupted again on Oct. 8th, producing an M6.7-class solar flare. The blast also propelled a solar tsunami through the sun's atmosphere. It was a near-global event.

A solar tsunami--formally known as a Moreton wave--is a giant, fast-moving wave of hot plasma and magnetic energy that ripples across the surface of the sun. The shock front is taller than Earth, moving faster than 1 million mph.

As this wave expanded over the face of the sun, a CME lifted off. It is expected to graze Earth on Oct. 11th, adding its energy to that of two CMEs ahead of it.

Ex Intelligence UAP Head Jay Stratton | “Out of the Shadows”

Terence Winter, Dan Farah Team to Develop Series Based on UAP Memoir ‘Out of the Shadows’

Terence Winter and Dan Farah are partnering for a series take on the memoir of former U.S. Intelligence official Jay Stratton titled “Out of the Shadows,” Variety has learned.

In the memoir, which will be published by HarperCollins imprint William Morrow on Oct. 13, Stratton delves deep into his experiences investigating unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP) and non-human intelligent life. Winter will executive produce via Cold Front Productions, with Farah executive producing under his Farah Films banner.

Stratton was previously the Chief of Air & Space Warfare in the Defense Warning Office of the Defense Intelligence Agency. After seeing evidence of a UAP over a nuclear missle site, he cofounded the Advanced Aerospace Weapon System Applications Program (AAWSAP), the first official U.S. Government program to investigate UAP since 1969.

He then created and led the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force (UAPTF), the first whole-of-government investigation of UAP. He claims to have discovered an 80-year cover up of the existence of non-human intelligent life.

“It’s time for the world to learn the truth,” Stratton said. “There is far too much at stake. UAP activity over our nation’s sensitive military and nuclear sites is an ongoing issue.”

As Stratton investigated UAP and non-human intelligent life, he says that he, his wife, and children experienced unexplained encounters.

“In the early days of my investigation into UAP and non-human intelligent life, my work was so classified I couldn’t even tell my wife and kids that I had learned we are not alone in the universe or about any of the paradigm shift information I was learning,” he said. “I had to live a double life, where the front door to my house served as a boundary between two distinct identities… but that all changed when we started having UAP activity and encounters with non-human intelligent life at our house and my wife and kids saw it with their own eyes.

In one sense, I felt horrible that my work had followed me home and crossed that boundary. But in another unexpected way, it was a relief because now my family knew what I was dealing with and we could navigate it together, as a family. While what we went through could have torn us apart, it actually brought us closer together. We were an ordinary family dealing with extraordinary circumstances.”

“For all of human history, mankind has wondered whether we are the only intelligent life in the universe. Jay Stratton’s shocking true story answers that question and more as it delves into the world of the U.S. Government’s investigation of UAP and non-human intelligent life,” Winter said. “It’s a riveting journey into a world the public knows little about. Jay is the key-man in the U.S. Government’s modern-day investigation of UAP. While his decades of work has been in the shadows, it has changed the course of history and I couldn’t be more excited to bring his story to the screen.”

Aaron Rodgers' Star Receiver DK Metcalf Claims 'Another Civilization' Exists on Earth

(3:52) View from a Steelers fan

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf has claimed he thinks Antarctica is 'another world' and that there is 'another civilization inside of Earth.'

The wide receiver, who will be a key weapon for star QB Aaron Rodgers this season, aired the unusual theories during an interview with The Athletic.

He even appeared to joke that he'd be sharing his thoughts with Rodgers, adding: 'I'm a big conspiracy theorist. Shout out to my quarterback.'

Brent Christner, an associate professor of microbiology at the University of Florida, was cited by The Athletic. He revealed that while there are microbes in the water that sits underneath miles of ice in Antarctica, there are so few of them that even tiny creatures could not survive down there.

Christner also explained how Antarctica is so much colder than the Arctic and any food or supplies must be brought in externally because of the extreme climate.

Adding further fuel to his theory, Metcalf asked: 'You can go to Alaska. You could go to the North Pole. But why not Antarctica? Why can't you just book a trip to Antarctica?'

However, tourism in Antarctica is a thing and often takes place between November and March with guests most often arriving by ship. While there are no commercial airports in Antarctica, airports that do exist are controlled by governments.

Turns out that is on Metcalf's radar, too. 'Why is there a secret meeting - well, it's not secret, but why is there a meeting between every world leader of every country in Antarctica, specifically?'

No doubt Rodgers and Metcalf will be sharing more theories with each other over the course of the season.

"I look up when I walk
    So the tears won’t fall
    Remembering those happy spring days
    But tonight I’m all alone

I look up when I walk
Counting the stars with tearful eyes
    Remembering those happy summer days
    But tonight I’m all alone

    Happiness lies beyond the clouds
    Happiness lies above the sky
I look up when I walk
    So the tears won’t fall

Though my heart is filled with sorrow
    For tonight I’m all alone
    Remembering those happy autumn days
    But tonight I’m all alone

Sadness hides in the shadow of the stars
Sadness lurks in the shadow of the moon

I look up when I walk
    So the tears won’t fall
Though my heart is filled with sorrow
    For tonight I’m all alone"

    Ice Fishing for Cosmic Neutrinos

Scientists are melting holes in the bottom of the world. In fact, almost 100 holes melted near the South Pole are now being used as an astronomical observatory.

Astronomers with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory lowered a long string knotted with basketball-sized light detectors into each vertical lake. The water in each hole soon refreezes. The detectors attached to the strings are sensitive to blue light emitted in the surrounding clear ice. Such light results from fast-moving secondary particles liberated when high-energy neutrinos emitted by powerful processes out in the universe collide with ice molecules.

IceCube has now detected many illuminating neutrinos. Pictured in 2010, one of the last of IceCube's detector strings is lowered into the freezing abyss, making this observatory the largest neutrino detector ever created. In recognition of unprecedented discoveries, it was announced earlier this week that a founding leader of the IceCube Collaboration will be awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics.
