    From TEPCO Latest Press Releases
Quote Below is major impact to TEPCO's facilities due to the Miyagiken-Oki
Earthquake that occurred yesterday at 2:46PM.
    *new items are underlined

    [Nuclear Power Station]
    ***ushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station:
Units 1 to 3: shutdown due to earthquake
Units 4 to 6: outage due to regular inspection
    * Evacuation has been instructed by the national government to the local
residents within 10 km radius of ***ushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station
and ***ushima Daini Nuclear Power Station.
    * Measurement of radioactive material (Iodine, etc.) by monitoring car
indicates increasing value compared to normal level. One of the
monitoring posts is also indicating higher than normal level. We will
continue monitoring discharge of radioactive material from exhaust stack
    and discharge canal, etc.
    * We have decided to implement measures to reduce the pressure of the
reactor containment vessel for those units that cannot confirm certain
level of water injection by the Reactor Core Isolation Cooling System,
in order to fully secure safety.

Well yes it is benevolent crow. It’s quite wide of the truth. According to reports here in the UK BBC & Sky News the Japanese authorities have released some pressure from the reactor core to atmosphere in order to manage the situation. This sounds quite sensible, according to industry commentators here. So no it hasn’t gone into meltdown.

Reports say Japan has one of the most advanced nuclear industries, so I’m sure they have trained for this before. The US Air Force is also flying in supplies according to Mrs Clinton.

Thank you Fred, I wish folks would research these things more before posting. My heart can jump to my throat if I think my family is in danger. I am usually a calm person. I guess we all have been a little on edge today. So sad for the folks in Japan my heart goes out to them.

    – Fri Mar 11, 6:53 am ET
JAKARTA, Indonesia – One of Indonesia's most active volcanos has erupted, sending lava and searing gas clouds tumbling down its slopes.

Volcanology official Agus Budianto said Friday that authorities were still trying to evacuate residents living along the slopes of Mount Karangetang.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage.

The 5,853-foot (1,784-meter) mountain is located on Siau, part of the Sulawesi island chain. It last erupted in August, killing four people.

In the Russian Far East, there has been a strong volcanic eruption. The air got a great cloud of volcanic dust, which can pose a threat to air traffic in the region.

Local experts warn that, dust can rise up to a height of seven kilometers.

Explosions were accompanied by minor earthquakes. Russian service monitoring the activity of cones, however, ensure that the implemented measures guarantee the safety of residents of neighboring towns.

According to Russian media reports, the first cloud of dust covered the city of Ust-Kamczatsk. Over five thousand people are forced to stay at home. The authorities have recommended the strict ban on opening windows.

The thing is Fred - if the media say that the nuclear reactor has gone into meltdown it makes people freak out, but, if they say that they are no longer able to cool the reactor, people don't realise that it means that the nuclear reactor has gone into meltown and they are calmer about it.

Keeping in mind the news didn't even report all the earthquakes prior to the big ones.
Our abc news hadn't reported on the Russian volcano or the Japan volcano when I last looked.

So - I would be wary about trusting the official version to keep people all that informed.

Of course CNN could be full of it. Didn't they report the fall of one of the 911 buildings before it actually fell? Still - it did fall eventually.

I agree with you about Media manipulation but these guys sitting at home and posting on You Tube and calling themselves news outlets, come on what do they know about what’s going on.

So they have let some pressure go, rather than let it overheat, is that not sensible. The local population has been moved back 6 miles as a precaution, so how is this going to danger people in West Coast US…. It isn’t…

What’s more a concern is the volcanic ash from these eruptions, that might shut down air travel in west coast US, and around Northern Aus…

here is the site with the Union of Concerned Scientists press release and article should they publish any updates about a meltdown

    excerpt:
If battery power is depleted before AC power is restored, however, the RCIC will stop supplying water to the core and the water level in the reactor core could drop. If it drops far enough, the core would overheat and the fuel would become damaged. Ultimately, a “meltdown” could occur: the core could become so hot that it forms a molten mass that melts through the steel reactor vessel. This would release a large amount of radioactivity from the vessel into the containment building that surrounds the vessel.
The containment building’s main purpose is to keep radioactivity from being released into the environment. A meltdown would build up pressure in the containment building. At this point we do not know if the earthquake damaged the containment building enough to undermine its ability to contain the pressure and allow radioactivity to leak out.
Well Ok that’s true, but Im sure they are trying to restore AC power, if they don’t I’m certain they can fly in or truck in temporary standby AC power until they get the main generators going…Come on folks this is Japan, they are serious engineers if it was Zimbabwe yes I would understand your concern…

As far as what caused the quake, and what caused the whirlpool, can we all agree that it is: unknown?

I dont care who says what, the fact is, none of us know = no theory can be ruled out due to the scientific concensus.

To SKI: Im not trying to panic you, but right about now, Id be packing up and heading for the hills ( as long as the hill isnt a volcano).

Love and peace to you from CA brother.
Ok...whether this was induced with help of humand hands or not....Personally I say not.

To boundary plates grinding past each other....one plate grinding under the other, pushing under it. This always happens...sometimes they get "stuck" then they become "unstuck" suddenly, this was the cause of this earthquake...the energy released was that of an 8.9 magnitude measurment; this is equal to 336 megatons or 1.41 EJ (Exajoule) (10^18 Joules)....1 Megaton (1,000,000 metric tonnes) ...This quake produced a serious amount of energy!

Whirlpools (Eddys or water sink hole) happen because of the interaction between rushing water and the geology of the coastline and seafloor. Whirlpools aren't unusual after waves of this size. Infact, if you research you can find past sightings of such things...again, it has to be a large Tsunami to create such a massive eddy (Whirlpool).

    Edit:

Aftershock: A cloud of smaller Earthquakes around ruptured fault, releasing stress added by Earthquake.

Triggered shock: Stress added by initial Earthquake pushes a nearby, already stressed fault over the point of rupture.

An aftershock can overlap with triggered rupture on an already stressed fault.

I agree with you about Media manipulation but these guys sitting at home and posting on You Tube and calling themselves news outlets, come on what do they know about what’s going on.
    Again - are you serious?
I've gotten a hellavu lot more 'news' from you tube in a few months than I have in years of listening to the TV.

And I posted the link to the CNN story where the information came from. He didn't make it up he just passed it on. What is it you're disputing here?
Yes I am serious Teaks, Its junk I could sit in my bedroom and put our rubbish like that, what training have they had O.

If you want the honest answer without offending the Americans, I wouldn’t even trust CNN.

Get some serious guys on instead of these Muppets sitting at home.

    Here you go..
