Initially, President Emmanuel Macron was not planning to attend any of Pope Leo XIV’s Masses during the visit to France. The Élysée had announced that he would skip the religious celebrations, including the huge Mass in Paris, where he was represented by Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu and his wife Brigitte Macron.

However, he changed his plans today. Macron rearranged his schedule and attended Pope Leo’s Mass at Saint-Étienne Cathedral in Metz, the final Mass of the papal visit. He also planned to take part in the Pope’s official farewell.

NEW: Melania Trump is taking credit for a temporary ceasefire in Oleshky, Ukraine, that Pope Leo XIV asked Vladimir Putin for from his hospital bed.

Leo phoned Putin on Oct. 16, three days after lung cancer surgery, then called Volodymyr Zelenskyy two days after he was released.

President Trump has spent much of this year attacking the American pope, once declaring that “if I wasn’t in the White House, Leo wouldn’t be in the Vatican.”

NEW: Pope Leo XIV is set to become the first sitting pontiff in the Catholic Church’s two-thousand-year history to vote in a secular election.

Leo requested an Illinois mail ballot on Oct. 3, and it was sent to his brother John’s home in New Lenox, Ill.

John Prevost visited the pope at the Vatican on Wednesday and may now be carrying the ballot back to the Will County clerk by hand.
