My best thoughts and wishes to everyone affected by this quake and shunami.
I cant help but wonder if we need to be looking over our shoulders for something else at this time, if harp had anything to do with this then maybe this was just a distraction.

    Blessings

Thanks Harley for the visual. It seems the entire pacific plate is moving west. Likely this will continue with more subduction and more volcanism along the asian east coast, Indonesia and Australia east coast. Might even see ocean floor rise in some areas (east of the subduction zone).

This might relieve stress on the locked San Andreas for new activity there. Keep in mind however, the New Madrid rift is also pushing the north American plate west of the fault, westward as well which might keep the San Andreas locked.

IF (as far as I know at this moment, it's still an 'if') there is a meltdown at any of the nuclear reactors, the concern is about fallout. Gamma radiation is not an issue (unless perhaps you're inside the reactor building, and then you might have bigger problems!). Radioactive material is dangerous if breathed in, or ingested. Keeping your skin covered is also good advice. Perhaps something like a poncho is useful. It would seem that wind direction is the biggest factor in where this material goes, and I would think the officials are taking this into account in any evacuation orders. Rainfall is good in that it will bring much of any airborne material down. Radioactive material that settles onto food or water is dangerous if that is then ingested.

This is probably elaborated on in any book, etc. about nuclear fallout. This is just a very bare bones explanation.

    G'day All,

It has been advised for those near affected sites to not drink tap water (even if available) .
Bottled water only. This is a usual precaution following an event like this.
I re-iterate the advise given by the Japanese official yesterday 'Stay Vigilant'.
The wind is blowing gases off shore.
Be aware this may change but is not forecasted to in the immediate future.
There is a danger of further tsunami and quakes.

    Panopticon

    Addendum:
Advice reminder from Japanese Govt added: Residents to stay inside. Turn off air conditioners

OK, you don't see smoke rising in the direction of your plant?

In your predicament you don't have time to read books or grocery shopping. So do this:

Water and food you need, maybe for several days. Use tin containers if at all possible. If not there's no time now to worry about it.

With the quakes still occurring I would not recommend staying in the house. The best place for you guys to stay is UNDER YOUR VAN. Gather up everything and anything you can find to fill the gap between the ground and the van, as entirely as possible. Take bedding, food, and water with you. This is going to be your igloo and will offer the best protection under your circumstances.

If you don't have time to set that up then stay inside the van. But I gotta tell you that glass windows offer no shield whatsoever!

Under no circumstances inhale or ingest the open air. Always use a filter - rags, towels, etc. Whatever you can find.

Keep all bare skin covered at all times.

If this really happens you will have to stay in your igloo for 3 to 5 days, or until help arrives.

This info is from NBC Training.

Stay calm. Your wife and others will be much stronger.

    Now Get Busy NOW!

    Love You Man!

Wow now that's a reality slap in the face... thanks Harley. Very good, strong handy advice.

Have you just heard the speeches they have just said? They are going to use (sea water) and some other stuff to contain this problem and they believe this is a solution. They say the nuclear reactor is undamaged..( I can't believe I'm talking about nuclear reactors and stuff ) Is this a bluff? The radios for evacuation has gone from 10km to 20 km but they say the readings have dropped and this is just a safety precaution. The outer walls blew up because of steam of some sort ... I'm really talking about something I have no idea about..

    Harley what do you think?

It was a building. Possibly a heat exchanger building for cooling.

Picture 1: See the little building just to the right of the base of the tower?

Picture 2: The little building is probably gone now I'm afraid.

It looked like a pretty massive explosion.

We are possibly only seeing the beginning of it. With the moon moving into it's closest position the earth's crust will become even more unstable, with major danger event on april 16.

I'm beginning to be quite concerned for our West Coast over here. There really hasn't been much in the way of stress relief for the Pacific Plate in quite a few years, and the experts have been warning for many years that the Seattle area is about 200 years overdue for the next "Big One" (8.0 Plus).

taken from wikipedia re the fire event at seascale......

On the morning of Friday 11 October, when the fire was at its worst, eleven tons of uranium were ablaze. Temperatures were becoming extreme (one thermocouple registered 1,300°C) and the biological containment around the stricken reactor was now in severe danger of collapse. Faced with this crisis, the operators decided to use water. This was incredibly risky: molten metal oxidises in contact with water, stripping oxygen from the water molecules and leaving free hydrogen, which could mix with incoming air and explode, tearing open the weakened containment. Faced with a lack of other options, the operators decided to go ahead with the plan. About a dozen hoses were hauled to the charge face of the reactor; their nozzles were cut off and the lines themselves connected to scaffolding poles and fed into fuel channels about a metre above the heart of the fire.

Tom Tuohy then ordered everyone out of the reactor building except himself and the Fire Chief. All cooling and ventilating air entering the reactor was shut off. Tuohy once again hauled himself atop the reactor shielding and ordered the water to be turned on, listening carefully at the inspection holes for any sign of a hydrogen reaction as the pressure was increased. Tuohy climbed up several times and reported watching the flames leaping from the discharge face slowly dying away. During one of the inspections, he found that the inspection plates—which were removed with a metal hook to facilitate viewing of the discharge face of the core—were stuck fast. This, he reported, was due to the fire trying to suck air in from wherever it could.

"I have no doubt it was even sucking air in through the chimney at this point to try and maintain itself," he remarked in an interview.

Finally he managed to pull the inspection plate away and was greeted with the sight of the fire dying away.

"First the flames went, then the flames reduced and the glow began to die down," he described, "I went up to check several times until I was satisfied that the fire was out. I did stand to one side, sort of hopefully," he went on to say, "but if you're staring straight at the core of a shut down reactor you're going to get quite a bit of radiation."

Water was kept flowing through the pile for a further 24 hours until it was completely cold.

Ski, I really feel for you.

Here's a snippet from an article about how Dr. Akizuki prevented radiation sickness after the Hiroshima bombing through daily consumption of miso soup. The good thing is you're in exactly the right place to get miso.... If I were you I'd be having some every day, just in case. Get the most natural miso you can find.

    Hope this helps.

Quote At the time of the world's first plutonium atomic bombing, on August 9, 1945, two hospitals were literally in the shadow of the blast, about one mile from the epicenter in Nagasaki. American scientists declared the area totally uninhabitable for 75 years. At University Hospital 3000 patients suffered greatly from leukemia and disfiguring radiation burns. This hospital served its patients a modern fare of sugar, white rice, and refined white flour products. Another hospital was St. Francis Hospital, under the direction of Shinichiro Akizuki, M.D. Although this hospital was located even closer to the blast's epicenter than the first, none of the workers or patients suffered from radiation sickness. Dr. Akizuki had been feeding his patients and workers brown rice, miso soup, vegetables and seaweed every day. The Roman Catholic Church—and the residents of Nagasaki—called this a modern day miracle. Meanwhile, Dr. Akizuki and his co-workers disregarded the American warning and continued going around the city of Nagasaki in straw sandals visiting the sick in their homes.
