For decades we've been given information from the FDA, the CDC, the IOM (Institute of Medicine), the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) and the pharmaceutical companies regarding the safety of vaccines. In an attempt to level the playing field, I'd like to provide information that might otherwise be difficult to find and piece together. Having worked as a molecular biologist (in academia) as well as time spent at a non-profit autism gene bank, I've followed this debate for some time. I think the only way the general public can make an informed decision on vaccine safety is to provide data from both sides. Here's the other side.

This post will be the first in a series of posts that I'd like to make regarding more detailed information about the safety of vaccines (All contained in this thread). It will chronicle important events that happened over the last two decades. I will only post one part at a time so that the material is manageable. This will also provide an opportunity for others to comment.

Please understand, it's not my intention to paint a picture whereby vaccines are the cause of a generation of children that suffer from autism, allergies, ADD, ADHD, immune related issues and neurological disorders (to name a few). It's my personal opinion that vaccines are simply one piece of a much larger puzzle. I think the combination of vaccines, pharmaceutical drugs, toxins, pesticides, compromised food and water supplies as well as the unclean air we breathe are all slowly compromising the health of our children. Some more so than others. This thread and the posts that will follow are dedicated to the role vaccines play.

PART I. What did the government know about thimerosal and cover up decades ago?

The first piece I'd like to present is a report entitled Tobacco Science and The Thimerosal Scandal written by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. (Senior Attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council and Clinical Professor and Supervising Attorney at Pace University School of Law’s Environmental Litigation Clinic). The report was published in 2005.

This report highlights what government officials and the pharmaceutical companies knew and covered up regarding the dangers of thimerosal. I'm including a link to the PDF of the 66 page report for those that want to read it.

"During the 1990s, there were a significant number of reports filed into VAERS (The Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System) from doctors, public health regulators, and parents of children whose autism seemed directly linked to the vaccines. In response, in the autumn of 1999, the CDC asked its employee Thomas Verstraeten to perform the first large study of over 100,000 American kids whose vaccine and medical records were stored in CDC’s Vaccine Safety Datalink(VSD)."

"Verstraeten provoked alarm within the vaccine industry community when his data showed clear causative links between thimerosal and neurological damage, including autism. “The harm,” Verstraeten observed, “is done in the first month of life by thimerosal in vaccines.” He wrote in a December 17, 1999 e-mail to Robert Davis, a leading pharmaceutical industry consultant, that despite “running, rethinking, rerunning, and rethinking” the damaging effect of thimerosal persisted. He titled his 1999 e-mail, “It just won’t go away.”

"When Thomas Saari, a spokesperson for American Academy of Pediatrics reviewed Verstraeten’s data, he panicked. “What if the lawyers get hold of this?” he wrote in an e-mail to his colleagues, “There’s not a scientist in the world that can refute these findings.”

"As word of Verstraeten’s findings spread, panicked public health agencies who had green-lighted thimerosal began warning each other of the study’s implications. In a June 1999 e-mail memo to CDC’s Jose Cordero and Robert Bernier, Peter Patriarca, the director of FDA’s Division of Viral Products and an American Association of Pediatrics Infectious Disease Committee member (both AAP and FDA had strongly supported the vaccine regimen), worried that “the greatest point of vulnerability on this issue is that the systematic review of thimerosal in vaccines by the FDA could have been done years ago."

"The calculations done by FDA are not complex. By then, the FDA had calculated that a birth dose of the hepatitis B vaccine would result in mercury exposure nearly 38 times the EPA safety guideline. Referring to huge cumulative doses of thimerosal that children were now receiving in the multiple vaccinations, Patriarca observed, “We must keep in mind that the dose of ethyl mercury was not generated by ‘rocket science … [It] involves ninth grade algebra. What took the FDA so long to do the calculations? Why didn’t CDC and the advisory bodies do these calculations when they rapidly expanded the childhood immunization schedule?” He added, “I’m not sure if there will be an easy way out of the potential perception that the FDA, CDC and immunization policy bodies may have been ‘asleep at the switch’ re: thimerosal until now.”

"Then Patriarca pointed out the seminal problem that helped provoke this public health crisis in the first place, and that would steer government officials into a shameful conspiracy to cover up the greatest public health scandal in American history; the ubiquitous conflicts of interest— financial and otherwise—that infect relationships between the pharmaceutical industry and the public health authorities."

“It will also raise questions,” he cautioned, “about various advisory bodies regarding aggressive recommendations for use [of thimerosal in child vaccines].” Many members on the advisory bodies who review vaccine science have financial ties to industry. The agencies tainted by these conflicts include the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (“CDC”), the agency charged with investigating medical issues; the Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”), the agency charged with regulating vaccines; the Institute of Medicine (“IOM”), which examines policy issues for the National Academies; and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)."

"Of these, CDC is particularly compromised. CDC has the extraordinary power to guarantee a market and profits to vaccine makers. But the people who make these decisions often have a financial stake in their outcomes. According to a February 2004 report by UPI investigative journalist Mark Benjamin, members of CDC’s vaccine advisory committees often share vaccine patents, own stock in vaccine companies, receive payment for research or to monitor vaccine trials, and funding for academic departments. Furthermore, CDC itself each year receives money from vaccine makers from licensing agreements and for work on collaborative projects and CDC scientists regularly leave the agency to work for vaccine manufacturers."

The report concluded:

“Thimerosal used as a preservative in vaccines is likely related to the autism epidemic. This epidemic in all probability may have been prevented or curtailed had the FDA not been asleep at the switch regarding the lack of safety data regarding injected Thimerosal and the sharp rise of infant exposure to this known neurotoxin. Our public health agencies’ failure to act is indicative of institutional malfeasance for self protection and misplaced protectionism of the pharmaceutical industry.”

You know, there has to be a better alternative to 'sueing' Don't know what but it seems be the cause of such lying and manipulation. Also people with financial interest in a product also monitoring its safety!! Its madness, accidental or planned?!!!

In terms of ingredients in vaccines, I have also wondered about the other ones, not getting as much attention,, can you shed any light on this as well? One that comes to mind is alluminum and I'm sure there are many others.

I wish I could go back and find some of my older links when I was researching this (when kiddos were younger) but I remember how they claimed they stopped adding thimerosol to vaccines, which maybe they did, maybe they didn't, but there were still tons of old lots of it in doctor's offices as well. They had to get rid of it somehow I suppose

Anyway, I totally agree that is just one piece of the puzzle, although it's one of the most troubling ones for me to deal with in regards to health. It's certainly the one that angers me the most.

Many thanks, I will have all your writing posted at an hyperbar clinic in my region if you don't mind (I need your permission though). Full of autistic children in that clinic. I would send it to my pediatrician as well, we had an friendly argument on that.

Is there enough proofs for legal collective suing? Any lawsuits in US? In Canada? that you know of? To take care of an autistic child is many times 100,000$ (must be between 500,000 and 1 million) in his life time. To try to correct the situation through alternative medicine, not tax deductible in Canada, no medical or insurance coverage because alternative treatments are not deemed useful, is a few hundred thousands of dollars in Canada, all this between the age of 4 usually and 16. And most parents do not know where to start and how to proceed and either do not have the money or get real poor in the process.

Divorce rate is alarming amongst parents, siblings have problems as well, because of their handicap brother/sister.

Furthermore, parents have been yelling about the vaccines for the last 20 years, not to be believed.

I must say however that some damages are entirely reversible, some are not (from what I observed up to now). As long as you can pay for treatments.

Gosh this make me real p..sed.

"In general, there are two major types of vaccines: those made of bacteria and those made of viruses. Vaccines are further distinguished as being live or dead. Dead vaccines are inactivated through heat, radiation or chemicals. Before a live vaccine is deemed suitable for human use it must be weakened. This is done by serial passage. This means that the vaccine is passed through viable tissue several times (sometimes as many as fifty times) to reduce it’s potency. Many different species may be used for this purpose; monkeys and chick embryos. Once the virus is weaker it must be strengthened with disinfectants and stabilizers such as but not limited to streptomycin, sodium chloride, sodium hydroxide, aluminum, hydrochloride, sorbitol, hydrolyzed gelatin, formaldehyde, squalene and thimerosal a mercury derivative."



Another interesting piece that everyone should be aware of took place in June of 2010. "A Rule Change to give one staff employee the sole authority to allow “exceptions or alternatives” when drug companies want to change vaccine ingredients, such as preservatives (like thimerosal) or adjuvants (like aluminum) or the amount of residual protein and antibiotics in vaccines."

The FDA’s proposed change to Requirements for Constituent Materials was quietly published in The Federal Register in June, 2010.

The FDA is arguing that the rule change is necessary to “reduce burdens on industry” and to provide “greater flexibility and reduced regulatory requirements.” It gives one FDA staff Director the power to give drug companies the green light to “employ advances in science and technology as they become available” when companies want to make new vaccines really fast and get more bang for the buck.

Now that the Rule Change is in effect, a vaccine manufacturer can request a change in the content or amount of vaccine ingredients by simply writing a “brief statement describing the basis for the request and supporting data” as part of the original license application or for a pending or approved application. There is no information about how much scientific evidence the drug companies will have to submit to prove the new ingredients are safe; or whether the FDA’s Vaccine Advisory Committee will be able to review that evidence; or whether the American public will have a chance to comment before vaccine ingredients are changed.

This should raise red flags.

If I understand well, Marin, your are telling us from the excerpt of new regulations, that the pharmaceutical companies can put whatever they want in vaccines, without being checked at all. In orther words, we don't know what is in those vaccines anylonger.

And that there is no studies as well as for their efficiency or their low risk being made. Do I understand well?

Therefore, we would be much worst off than ever before with vaccination, isn't it?

The second piece I'd like to present is another report written in 2005 by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. entitled Deadly Immunity. It examines how the government, health care officials and drug companies concealed data about the dangers of thimerosal in an effort to prevent parents from suing drug companies and "affecting their bottom line."

This report covers many vital pieces of the vaccine story. It needs to be heard. Because there is so much information in this report, I will only present the first half at this time.

PART II. What government scientists and health care officials knew about thimerosal and chose to cover up.

"In June 2000, a group of top government scientists and health officials met in Norcross, Ga. The meeting was held at a Methodist retreat center, nestled in wooded farmland to ensure complete secrecy. The agency had issued no public announcement of the session -- only private invitations to 52 attendees.

There were high-level officials from the CDC and the FDA, the top vaccine specialist from the World Health Organization in Geneva, and representatives of every major vaccine manufacturer, including GlaxoSmithKline, Merck, Wyeth and Aventis Pasteur. All of the scientific data under discussion, CDC officials repeatedly reminded the participants, was strictly "embargoed." There would be no making photocopies of documents, no taking papers with them when they left.

The federal officials and industry representatives had assembled to discuss a disturbing new study that raised alarming questions about the safety of a host of common childhood vaccines administered to infants and young children. According to a CDC epidemiologist named Tom Verstraeten, who had analyzed the agency's massive database containing the medical records of 100,000 children, a mercury-based preservative in the vaccines -- thimerosal -- appeared to be responsible for a dramatic increase in autism and a host of other neurological disorders among children. "I was actually stunned by what I saw," Verstraeten told those assembled at Simpsonwood, citing the staggering number of earlier studies that indicate a link between thimerosal and speech delays, attention-deficit disorder, hyperactivity and autism.

Since 1991, when the CDC and the FDA had recommended that three additional vaccines laced with the preservative be given to extremely young infants -- in one case, within hours of birth -- the estimated number of cases of autism had increased fifteenfold, from one in every 2,500 children to one in 166 children.

But instead of taking immediate steps to alert the public and rid the vaccine supply of thimerosal, the officials and executives at Simpsonwood spent most of the next two days discussing how to cover up the damaging data. According to transcripts obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, many at the meeting were concerned about how the damaging revelations about thimerosal would affect the vaccine industry's bottom line.

In fact, the government has proved to be far more adept at handling the damage than at protecting children's health. The CDC paid the Institute of Medicine to conduct a new study to whitewash the risks of thimerosal, ordering researchers to "rule out" the chemical's link to autism. It withheld Verstraeten's findings, even though they had been slated for immediate publication, and told other scientists that his original data had been "lost" and could not be replicated. And to thwart the Freedom of Information Act, it handed its giant database of vaccine records over to a private company, declaring it off-limits to researchers. By the time Verstraeten finally published his study in 2003, he had gone to work for GlaxoSmithKline and reworked his data to bury the link between thimerosal and autism."

The drug companies are also getting help from powerful lawmakers in Washington. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, who has received $873,000 in contributions from the pharmaceutical industry, has been working to immunize vaccine makers from liability in 4,200 lawsuits that have been filed by the parents of injured children. On five separate occasions, Frist has tried to seal all of the government's vaccine-related documents -- including the Simpsonwood transcripts -- and shield Eli Lilly, the developer of thimerosal, from subpoenas. In 2002, the day after Frist quietly slipped a rider known as the "Eli Lilly Protection Act" into a homeland security bill, the company contributed $10,000 to his campaign and bought 5,000 copies of his book on bioterrorism. Congress repealed the measure in 2003 -- but earlier this year, Frist slipped another provision into an anti-terrorism bill that would deny compensation to children suffering from vaccine-related brain disorders. "The lawsuits are of such magnitude that they could put vaccine producers out of business and limit our capacity to deal with a biological attack by terrorists," says Andy Olsen, a legislative assistant to Frist.

Even many conservatives are shocked by the government's effort to cover up the dangers of thimerosal. Rep. Dan Burton, a Republican from Indiana, oversaw a three-year investigation of thimerosal after his grandson was diagnosed with autism. "Thimerosal used as a preservative in vaccines is directly related to the autism epidemic," his House Government Reform Committee concluded in its final report. "This epidemic in all probability may have been prevented or curtailed had the FDA not been asleep at the switch regarding a lack of safety data regarding injected thimerosal, a known neurotoxin." The FDA and other public-health agencies failed to act, the committee added, out of "institutional malfeasance for self protection" and "misplaced protectionism of the pharmaceutical industry."

And there is nothing more devastating to a structure of lies than the revelation of the truth upon which the structure of lies was built, because the shock waves of the revelation of the truth reverberate, and continue to reverberate throughout the Earth for generations to follow, awakening even those people who had no desire to be awakened to the truth.” (by Delamar Duvaris as written in the preface of “Behold the Pale Horse” by William Cooper).

The basic truth that served as the foundation for the mountain of lies known as vaccinations was the observation that mammals which recover from infection with microorganisms acquire natural immunity from further infections. Whenever cytotoxic T cells (the little Pac man cells which devour and neutralize viruses, bacteria, and cancer cells, thus conferring cellular immunity and are also responsible for allograft rejection) and B cells (antibody producing cells which confer humoral immunity by circulating in the body’s fluids or “humors”, primarily serum or lymph) are activated by various substances foreign to the body called antigens, some of the T and B cells become memory cells. Thus, the next time the individual meets up with that same antigen, the immune system can be quickly triggered to demolish it. This is the process known as natural immunity.

This truth gave birth to a beLIEf that if a foreign antigen was injected into an individual, that individual would then become immune to a future infection. This beLIEf, (you see the lie in the middle), was given the name, “vaccinations”. What the promoters of vaccination failed to realize is that secretory IgA (an antibody found predominately in saliva and secretions of the gastrointestinal and respiratory tract mucosa) is the initial normal antibody response to all airborne and ingested pathogens. IgA helps protect against viral infection, agglutinate bacteria, neutralize microbial toxins, and decrease attachment of pathogens to mucosal surfaces. What this author has realized is that bypassing this mucosal aspect of the immune system by directly injecting organisms into the body leads to a corruption in the immune system itself whereby IgA is transmuted into IgE, and/or the B cells are hyperactivated to produce pathologic amounts of self-attacking antibody as well as suppression of cytotoxic T cells (as explained shortly). As a result, the pathogenic viruses or bacteria cannot be eliminated by the immune system and remain in the body, where they cause chronic disease and thus further grow and/or mutate as the individual is exposed to ever more antigens and toxins in the environment. This is especially true with pathogens grouped under the term “stealth adapted”. These are formed when vaccine viruses combine with viruses from tissues used to culture them, or when bacteria lose their cell walls when a person takes antibiotics and transform into “L forms”, leading to a lack of some critical antigens normally recognized by the cellular immune system. Another example is stealth adapted (mutated) cytomegaloviruses which arose from African green monkey (simian) kidney cells when they were used to culture polio virus for live polio virus vaccines. Thus, not only was the vaccinee inoculated with polio, but with the cytomegalovirus as well.

The mechanism by which the immune system is corrupted can best be realized when you understand that the two poles of the immune system (the cellular and humoral mechanisms) have a reciprocal relationship in that when the activity of one pole is increased, the other must decrease. Thus, when one is stimulated, the other is inhibited. Since vaccines activate the B cells to secrete antibody, the cytotoxic (killer) T cells are subsequently suppressed. (In fact, progressive vaccinia (following vaccination with smallpox) occurs in the presence of high titers of circulating antibody to the virus1 combined with suppressed cytotoxic T cells, leading to spreading of lesions all over the body). This suppression of the cell mediated response is thus a key factor in the development of cancer and life threatening infections. In fact, the “prevention” of a disease via vaccination is, in reality, an inability to expel organisms due to the suppression of the cell-mediated response. Thus, rather than preventing disease, the disease is actually prevented from ever being resolved. The organisms continue circulating through the body, adapting to the hostile environment by transforming into other organisms depending on acidity, toxicity and other changes to the internal terrain of the body as demonstrated by the works of Professor Antoine Béchamp. He established this prior to the development of the “germ theory” of disease by Louis Pasteur. Pasteur’s “germ theory” was a plagiarist’s attempt to reshape the truth from Béchamp into his own “original” premise – the beLIEf that germs are out to “attack” us, thereby causing dis-ease. Thus, treatment of infection with antibiotics as well as “prevention” of disease with vaccines are both just corrupted attempts at cutting off the branches of dis-ease, when the root of the cause is a toxic internal environment combined with nutritional deficiency. However, since Pasteur’s germ theory was conducive to the profits of the burgeoning pharmaceutical cartels that only manage dis-ease, no mention of the work of Professor Béchamp is made in medical school curricula.

To make matters worse than the suppression of cellular immunity which occurs when vaccines are injected, adjuvants (which are substances added to vaccines to enhance the antibody response) can actually lead to serious side effects themselves. Adjuvants include oil emulsions, mineral compounds (which may contain the toxic metal aluminum), bacterial products, liposomes (which allow delayed release of substances), and squalene. The side effects of adjuvants themselves include hyperactivity of B cells leading to pathologic2 levels of antibody production, as well as allergic reaction to the adjuvants themselves (as demonstrated in Gulf War I soldiers injected with vaccines containing the adjuvant squalene, to which antibodies were found in many soldiers). Note that the pathologically elevated hyperactivity of antibody production caused by adjuvants also results in a distraction from the other antigens that the immune system encounters “naturally”, which must be addressed to maintain health.

This author realized years ago that inoculations caused the transformation of IgA into IgE; however, thanks to researcher Patrick Jordan finding the NATO Life Sciences book entitled “Immunological Adjuvants and Vaccines” (6), it has now been revealed that it is the aluminum which is put into vaccines as an adjuvant which causes production of IgE…the antibody of allergy and anaphylactic shock. This shocking admission comes in this book after the statement on page 6 that aluminum “was introduced in 1926, before strict control by regulatory authorities was practiced; whether it would be allowed by regulatory authorities today is far from certain”.

On page 37 of this NATO book, it states that studies demonstrate that “aluminum causes stimulation of the production of anaphylactic antibody (IgE) in the mouse”, and that “the effect of aluminum on the IgE response in humans does not appear to have been investigated”. This is just like the statement in the package insert of all vaccines (including the Gardasil vaccine which alleges it protects against cervical cancer) that “no studies have been done to evaluate for the potential to cause carcinogenicity or genotoxicity”. However, these experiments are being carried out in children every time they are inoculated with disease…and the skyrocketing allergies, anaphylactic reactions and cancer make it self evident that the inoculations are behind it all. Thanks to the book, I now have the evidence that IgE production is due to vaccines, as well as the fact that these mad scientists know exactly what they are doing. If this is not evidence of crimes against humanity, what is? "

Can anyone give me information regarding the geographical distribution of vaccines, are the vaccines here in Italy the same as those distributed in the US? When I raised my concerns with my pediatrician regarding vaccinating my son she said that Italian vaccines no longer contained any mercury and were very safe.
Is there any vaccine that is considered a safe vaccine?

Anyone who has been investigating collusion between the US government and corporations/banks/military won't be surprised to find that collusion is at the heart of this issue as well.

I have been trying to get this kind of information out to parents for 4 years now. I have been called " a danger to society". My own family physician yelled at me: "if everyone starts thinking and doing like you, we will be back in Afrika within 10 years". Ofcourse I never went back to him, but as a newbaked parent, that was tough. I started to doubt myself and my desicion not to give vaccins to my children.
Here in Belgium we have a law that sais that every child must be vaccinated for polio before the age of 2. A few months ago there was another trial about this and the parents were not sentenced, for the first time!

Even though I raised my children with no vaccinations whatsoever and tried to instill in them the knowledge that vaccines are dangerous and that most of the science behind the vaccine theory is junk science, they still have difficulty resisting the tremendous pressure to vaccinate their children. They also do not seem to think vaccinations are as big a deal as I do. My grandchildren are 1 and 4 right now and so far have not had vaccinations. I think that unless you do extensive research yourself, as I have done for 32 years now, you are more easily influenced by societal pressures and the prevalence of pro vaccine advertising.

Your personality type is also a huge influence in your ability and desire to resist accepted truths. I am a natural born contrarian and have always instinctively questioned and most often rejected popular theories on just about everything. It seems to me that the vast majority of people prefer to follow acceptable norms without question. If you are the type of person who thrives on the approval of others you will find it difficult to resist the pressure to vaccinate your children. Pushing back against or resisting a prevalent belief system is always difficult.

In the 80's and 90's when my children were in school there were two reasons for receiving an exemption from vaccinations in Oregon, religious or medical. I used the religious exemption although I very much dislike the fact that one must lie in order to not acquiesce to the poisoning of their children. However it is much easier to lie than to tell a truth that people are not willing (or even able) to listen to. In order to get a medical exemption one would need a statement from a medical doctor that vaccination for your child is contraindicated because of a diagnosed medical condition.

In the US all 50 states allow medical exemptions, 48 states allow religious exemptions and 20 of the 48 states also allow philosophical exemptions. 2 states accept ONLY medical exemptions, which are more difficult to obtain. As awareness of the dangers of vaccinations increases it seems that the pressures to remove religious and philosophical exemptions are also increasing.

I very much admire the doctors, scientists and researchers who are willing to stand against the overwhelming pressures from the FDA, big pharma and mainstream medical to comply with their incorrect scientific theories and outright deceptions. Undoubtedly a majority of doctors must believe in the vaccination theory, since it was part of their medical education (indoctrination) but we know the pharmaceutical industry does not have the best interests of humanity as their core philosophy. It's all about money. They are undoubtedly participating in a scheme to sicken more people which will make them more money as people use their drugs throughout a lifetime of suffering and illness created and increasingly worsened by the poisonous drugs they ingest.

On re-reading your comment, I'm not sure if you are asking why are TPTB brainwashing parents into giving their children vaccines, or if you are asking why parents are buying the hype...
Re the latter, I would say the reason is that if you admit to yourself that the so-called "experts" on vaccines are WRONG or, even worse, are LYING, the implications are so enormous, it will rock your whole world. Everything that you have ever believed may become questionable and in need of reexamination. Most people will not willingly go there. And when it is a question of your child's safety, this can be even more frightening. It's like opening Pandora's Box.

Re the former, I would say that the junk "science" behind vaccines from the very beginning has not been universally seen for what it is because it would rock the world of the medical community and the commercial Big Pharma profiteers resoundingly, so the truth has been suppressed. The repercussions would vibrate throughout the whole Establishment-- heads would roll, and many more uncomfortable questions would be asked.
The agenda of the NWO is to control, dumb down and reduce the general population, and vaccines are a very good way to do that. The masses, in their eyes, are just guinea pigs in a laboratory to be experimented upon and disposed of according to their own purposes.
It's very hard to grasp if this is all new to you, but if you look at the evidence, it is, unfortunately, incontrovertible... if you are really willing to look, that is...
If you go back to the beginnings of the modern chemical and pharmaceutical industries and see the roots stemming from Nazi Germany, it will become more clear how the whole endeavor has been cloaked in darkness from the start.

The third piece I'd like to introduce is additional material taken from Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.'s report: Deadly Immunity. Once again, this report highlights how the government, health care officials and drug companies concealed data about the dangers of thimerosal.


PART II (cont.) What government scientists and health care officials knew about thimerosal and chose to cover up.

Internal documents reveal that Eli Lilly, which first developed thimerosal, knew from the start that its product could cause damage -- and even death -- in both animals and humans. In 1930, the company tested thimerosal by administering it to 22 patients with terminal meningitis, all of whom died within weeks of being injected -- a fact Lilly didn't bother to report in its study declaring thimerosal safe. In 1935, researchers at another vaccine manufacturer, Pittman-Moore, warned Lilly that its claims about thimerosal's safety "did not check with ours." Half the dogs Pittman injected with thimerosal-based vaccines became sick, leading researchers declared the preservative "unsatisfactory as a serum intended for use on dogs."

What is most striking is the lengths to which many of the leading detectives have gone to ignore -- and cover up -- the evidence against thimerosal. From the very beginning, the scientific case against the mercury additive has been overwhelming. The preservative, which is used to stem fungi and bacterial growth in vaccines, contains ethylmercury, a potent neurotoxin. If you inject thimerosal into an animal, its brain will sicken. If you apply it to living tissue, the cells die. If you put it in a petri dish, the culture dies. Knowing these things, it would be shocking if one could inject it into an infant without causing damage."

In the decades that followed, the evidence against thimerosal continued to mount. During the Second World War, when the Department of Defense used the preservative in vaccines on soldiers, it required Lilly to label it "poison." In 1967, a study in Applied Microbiology found that thimerosal killed mice when added to injected vaccines. Four years later, Lilly's own studies discerned that thimerosal was "toxic to tissue cells" in concentrations as low as one part per million -- 100 times weaker than the concentration in a typical vaccine. Even so, the company continued to promote thimerosal as "nontoxic" and also incorporated it into topical disinfectants. In 1977, 10 babies at a Toronto hospital died when an antiseptic preserved with thimerosal was dabbed onto their umbilical cords.

In 1982, the FDA proposed a ban on over-the-counter products that contained thimerosal, and in 1991 the agency considered banning it from animal vaccines. But tragically, that same year, the CDC recommended that infants be injected with a series of mercury-laced vaccines. Newborns would be vaccinated for hepatitis B within 24 hours of birth, and 2-month-old infants would be immunized for haemophilus influenzae B and diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis.

The drug industry knew the additional vaccines posed a danger. The same year that the CDC approved the new vaccines, Dr. Maurice Hilleman, one of the fathers of Merck's vaccine programs, warned the company that 6-month-olds who were administered the shots would suffer dangerous exposure to mercury. He recommended that thimerosal be discontinued, "especially when used on infants and children," noting that the industry knew of nontoxic alternatives. "The best way to go," he added, "is to switch to dispensing the actual vaccines without adding preservatives."

For Merck and other drug companies, however, the obstacle was money. Thimerosal enables the pharmaceutical industry to package vaccines in vials that contain multiple doses, which require additional protection because they are more easily contaminated by multiple needle entries. The larger vials cost half as much to produce as smaller, single-dose vials, making it cheaper for international agencies to distribute them to impoverished regions at risk of epidemics. Faced with this "cost consideration," Merck ignored Hilleman's warnings, and government officials continued to push more and more thimerosal-based vaccines for children.

Before 1989, American preschoolers received 11 vaccinations -- for polio, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis and measles-mumps-rubella. A decade later, thanks to federal recommendations, children were receiving a total of 22 immunizations by the time they reached first grade.

As the number of vaccines increased, the rate of autism among children exploded. During the 1990s, 40 million children were injected with thimerosal-based vaccines, receiving unprecedented levels of mercury during a period critical for brain development. Despite the well-documented dangers of thimerosal, it appears that no one bothered to add up the cumulative dose of mercury that children would receive from the mandated vaccines. "What took the FDA so long to do the calculations?" Peter Patriarca, director of viral products for the agency, asked in an e-mail to the CDC in 1999. "Why didn't CDC and the advisory bodies do these calculations when they rapidly expanded the childhood immunization schedule?"

But by that time, the damage was done. At two months, when the infant brain is still at a critical stage of development, infants routinely received three inoculations that contained a total of 62.5 micrograms of ethylmercury -- a level 99 times greater than the EPA's limit for daily exposure to methylmercury, a related neurotoxin. Although the vaccine industry insists that ethylmercury poses little danger because it breaks down rapidly and is removed by the body, several studies -- including one published in April by the National Institutes of Health -- suggest that ethylmercury is actually more toxic to developing brains and stays in the brain longer than methylmercury.

Rep. Burton says that the CDC "routinely allows scientists with blatant conflicts of interest to serve on intellectual advisory committees that make recommendations on new vaccines," even though they have "interests in the products and companies for which they are supposed to be providing unbiased oversight." The House Government Reform Committee discovered that four of the eight CDC advisors who approved guidelines for a rotavirus vaccine "had financial ties to the pharmaceutical companies that were developing different versions of the vaccine.

Thank you for your explanation. Yes, this is all new to me, but I always felt vaccinations aren't right. That's why non of my children have had vaccinations. And my question was indeed why people are brainwashed. And you gave me a good place to get started and to find out how this could get where it is today. Why parent are buying the hype, well that's because of the fear.
