Organizers of a humanitarian aid flotilla to the Gaza Strip say Israel has attempted to stop them by sabotaging the convoy.


The flotilla members said a joint Greek, Swedish and Norwegian boat was found sabotaged with serious damage to its propeller, a Press TV correspondent reported on Tuesday.

The flotilla activists suspect that Israeli agents were responsible for the damage.

On Monday, the international coalition organizing the Freedom Flotilla II held a press conference in Athens with representatives from all of the boats. The US was represented by Ann Wright, a former State Department official, and Alice Walker, an African-American author.

“We have learned that an Israeli law center financed by an American conservative, religious group, headed by John Hagee, is funding the attack on the Gaza flotilla. We call on the Greek government to let us sail,” Wright said.

The Israeli military attacked the Freedom Flotilla in international waters in the Mediterranean Sea on May 31, 2010, killing nine Turkish nationals aboard the Turkish-flagged MV Mavi Marmara and injuring about 50 other activists that were part of the team on the six-ship convoy.

The activists dismissed Israel's demands that any aid for Gaza be delivered through its crossing points and inspected by its military. The flotilla organizers have accepted that teams representing the United Nations or the European Union check the cargo.

Activists on a Canadian boat to Gaza have been discussing how to deal with an attack by the Israeli military in international waters.

David Heap of the Canadian boat said the members of the flotilla are prepared to face threats “non-violently with determination.”

Our correspondent says the flotilla will be delayed for at least a few days as repairs are carried out and inspections are completed.

However, the passengers remain upbeat and believe the momentum is still on their side. The freedom flotilla could be meeting in the international waters of the Mediterranean Sea by the weekend.

Greek authorities have reportedly seized the US "Audacity of Hope" moments after it set sail for Gaza to break Israel's blockade of the Palestinian coastal strip.


American activists took to Twitter on Friday to say they were intercepted by the Greek coast guard just moments after they left Perama port near Athens, a Press TV correspondent reported.

Greece's Civil Protection Ministry said on Friday that the coast guard had been ordered to take “all appropriate measures” to bar Gaza-bound Greek and international ships from leaving Greece's ports.

The ban comes as organizers of the humanitarian aid flotilla to the Gaza Strip say the Tel Aviv regime is making Greece halt the convoy.

They complain that Greece is throwing up “administrative obstacles” for the activists in response to pressure from Israel, the Associated Press reported on Monday.

“We call on the Greek government to let us sail,” Ann Wright said.

ATHENS - GREECE extended its ban on Gaza-bound ships leaving its ports for a second day on Saturday, saying it wanted to protect the activists.

And as the campaigners themselves appeared divided over how best to respond, the Middle East diplomatic Quartet stepped into the fray, with a statement discouraging new flotillas from sailing to Gaza to provide humanitarian aid.

Greece's Civil Protection Authority confirmed on Saturday that the ban on departures of ships 'with Greek and foreign flags from Greek ports to the maritime area of Gaza' was in place 'until further notice.' The ban had been imposed in light of 'the need to protect national interests' as well as 'the immediate dangers to human life posed by the attempt to break the blockade,' a statement said.

It cited Israel's 'declaration to use violence against those who attempt to break the blockade,' as well as a United Nations plea for member states on the Mediterranean 'to use their influence to discourage' the mission.

Activists have accused Israeli secret services of keeping the mission grounded through a campaign of harassment and dirty tricks, including 'sabotage' attempts on two boats and a slew of bureaucratic problems.

But they appeared at odds over how to react to the obstacles facing them. For while some activists called for an immediate departure, others argued the futility of defying the Greek ban. -- AFP

Hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists plan to fly to Israel before heading for Gaza after pressures by the Tel Aviv regime blocked other campaigners from reaching the impoverished enclave.


"We have responded to a call from Palestinian associations and about 500 hundred of us, women, men and children, will leave on July 8 to show them the world hasn't forgotten them," the organizers said, AFP reported on Monday.

The group will swarm the Ben Gurion International Airport southeast of Tel Aviv to protest the imposed siege against the Gaza Strip by the Israeli regime since 2007.

The blockade has deprived the entire 1.5 million Palestinian population of the territory of food, medicine, fuel and other necessities.

The campaigners include some 300 French nationals and others from Belgium, Germany, Italy, and the United States.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered aviation authorities to block the move. Media reports say all European passengers will be taken to a separate terminal and subjected to tight screening.

The activists, however, said, " Israel has no right to refuse us entry to the occupied Palestinian territories."

The planned effort comes after Greek authorities stood in the way of their fellow humanitarian campaigners that intended to sail to Gaza, apparently buckling under political pressures by the Israeli regime and its key allies in the US and Europe.

Israeli forces have launched airstrikes in the eastern part of Gaza city, with no immediate reports of the exact number of casualties.

According to initial reports, Israeli fighter jets targeted a garage used by mechanics in the Shujaiyyah neighborhood in the besieged Gaza Strip late on Tuesday night.

Earlier in the day, Israeli artillery shelling in east of the al-Maghazi refugee camp in Gaza killed two Palestinians and injured another.

In April, a series of Israeli airstrikes killed at least 19 Palestinians in the occupied territories.

On May 15, the Israeli military gunned down over two dozen people among those marking Israel's 1948 occupation of Palestine, known as the Nakba Day or "the day of the catastrophe."

The Israeli army frequently bombs the tunnel network in Gaza, claiming that Palestinian resistance fighters use the tunnels to store and smuggle in weapons. Palestinians, however, dismiss such allegations, insisting that they were forced to resort to the underground tunnels to bring in basic living supplies to the impoverished Gazans because the territory has been sealed off to the outside world by a punishing Israeli blockade for over three years.

Some 1.5 million people are being denied their basic rights, including the freedom of movement and their rights to appropriate living conditions, work, health and education.

In 1948, Israeli forces displaced some 700,000 Palestinians, forcing them to flee to different countries.

The Greek coast guard on the island of Crete has blocked a small French boat carrying activists to the impoverished Gaza Strip, says an organizer.


Claude Leostic with the French boat Dignite El Karameh said the vessel “was taken to Sitia in Crete by the Greek coast guard after being stopped in a nearby port while it was refueling,” AFP reported on Thursday.

“The authorities are stopping the boat from setting sail for various administrative reasons,” Leostic added.

Dignite El Karameh, which is carrying 12 pro-Palestinian activists, departed from a Greek port on Tuesday despite the country's ban on Gaza-bound aid ships.

In a separate development, another French vessel's attempt to sail to Gaza was also thwarted on Monday by the Greek coast guard officials. The Louise Michel, with 24 passengers on board, was circled by Greek vessels as it started up its engines.

Greek coast guards on Monday also intercepted the Canadian Tahrir (Liberation) vessel with at least 50 pro-Palestinian activists onboard.

More than 300 activists from 22 countries have signed up to participate in Freedom Flotilla II.

I have to say that I am sad that you do not seem to be aware that the Palestinians do not have weapons of MASS destruction. There's a huge difference between a rocket and planes full of bombs.
