What is going on in the middle east?
Here is my take on it. Am I on the right track?
- Palestine wants statehood in the UN.
- China supports Palestine's bid for statehood and warned the U.S. against a veto.
- Russia supports Palestine's bid for statehood.
- France supports Palestine's bid for statehood if it will lead to better negotiations.
- European union is leaning toward supporting Palestine's bid for statehood if it will lead to better negotiations.
- Turkey supports Palestine's bid for statehood.
- Saudi Arabia supports Palestine's bid for statehood and warned the U.S. against a veto.
- Israel does not support Palestine's bid for statehood.
- U.S. does not support Palestine's bid for statehood and will veto.
- Turkey is preparing for possibility of war with Israel.
- Israel is calling for preparedness of its reserve forces.
- Egypt is distancing itself from Israel.
I'm sure I'm missing some significant pieces. I'm not sure where Lebanon stands, Hamas etc.
But really, is this all just posturing? One side, whether it be Israel or Palestine, has to give a little on the border negotiations, and if neither does... what then? Do Israel and Palestine really intend on going to war (and dragging a bunch of different countries into war with them)? What are the other possible outcomes of this situation if neither will budge? How does Turkey fit into this?
