Here is a reminder from CANARIAS7....about the La Palma Eruption, and the information and misinformation, historically and otherwise....

    http://www.canarias7.es/articulo.cfm?id=231936

"The eruption of Teneguía: uncertainty before, tranquility and tourism after"

    "Traductor
The eruption of the volcano Teneguía, La Palma, occurred in the fall of 1971 and was preceded by a period of uncertainty in the population, the large number of earthquakes there, and became an unforgettable memory for the palm and an event that brought tourism to the island.

People were scared before the eruption, the succession of earthquakes caused the palm sometimes have to go out of their houses, and there were even those who slept in tents, reminiscent of Juan Jose Santos Efe, a neighbor who lived Fuencaliente first-person event.

Intense tremors, earthquakes strong enough and cracked houses caused the scare people, especially given the uncertainty of where the volcano erupt, says Juan Jose Santos.

However, when the October 26 Teneguía erupted on the island people attended breathed a quiet and unforgettable event of your memories, day and night there was a parade of people to see the volcano.

It was a typical rash, which produced a few low-lying volcanic cones and a series of lava that fell into the sea. Once started the eruption was a major attraction for the island, told Efe volcanologist Juan Carlos Carracedo CSIC.

Teneguía was the last eruption occurred in Spain and caused the deaths of two people, a photographer and a fisherman who got too close and went into a place where they died from lack of oxygen, recalls the volcanologist.

There was a lot of misinformation, many people make the mistake of getting too close to the volcano and the lava, and ignoring the presence of hazardous gases, laments Juan Jose Santos.

When times were Teneguía erupted and there were no existing instruments for measuring earthquakes and provide for a possible eruption.

The only information that was obtained by chance came as the American Information Agency (USIA) observed a large number of earthquakes, which were not perceived by the population, with a series of hydrophones that were installed in the south of La Palma monitor the passage of Soviet submarines, describes Carracedo.

The National Geographic Institute (IGN) documents fourteen episodes of eruptions took place in Spain since the fifteenth century, all in the Canaries.

To find the last eruption before Teneguía have to go back to 1949 and placed in the volcanoes of Nambroque, Peach and Llano del Banco, also in La Palma.

The first eruption in Spain than there is photographic documentation and geological studies was between 18 to November 27, 1909, when the volcano erupted Chinyero Tenerife.

And the first of which is recorded in the Geographical Institute at the volcano occurred or Burnt Mountain Tacande La Palma, although no damage data and the date is set, so vague, between 1430 and 1440.

Is even more inaccurate the second reference made by IGN, an eruption that occurred between 24 and 25 August 1492 in the Canary Islands and was seen by Christopher Columbus."

They ensure all call centers, in addition to mobile telephony base stations called strategic, placing mobile generators for those that do not have stationary group, ensuring power and cooling to the equipment. They have traveled to the island 12 emergency generators and a large capacity generator that could power of the population if necessary.

5 .- They have evolved from the work necessary to increase the current capacity of mobile communication. Quote Telefónica ensure vital communications in El Hierro if necessary
Don't forget Ham radio amateurs when all communications are down.
In Europe there are always HAM radio amateurs listening on the 40, 20 ,17,and 15 meter bands. These bands are suitable for reaching all of Europe from the Canaries.
If more HAM radio emergency frequencies are known, we can listen more specific.
    (40 meter: 7.0 - 7.2 Mhz, 20 meter: 14.0 - 14.35 Mhz, 17 meter: 18.0 18.168 Mhz, 15 meter: 21.0 - 21.45 Mhz)

    Amzer Zo,
It looks like this is just about as far south as poly plans to travel.

Randles, I don't think the wind/hydro hybrid power plant is a cause for concern, or related to the EQ associated with volcanic activity. By far this is the best most efficient alternative energy project I have seen to date. It makes me want to have an extinct volcano in my back yard.

Scientists are telling us we will hit peak oil by 2020, give or take a couple of years. You are well aware production won't halt, nor does it mean we won't have natural gas, hydro, or nuclear power, etc... but the cost will rise significantly. Best for all to be prepared for that, hype or no hype. With power, El Hierro will do well toward being able to support herself. No one should want to stop this project from coming to fruition. The oilers will get plenty of money, and for a longer period of time.

Am going to a meeting later on this evening at North Carolina State University to discuss wind power here, off our coast. We have the wind for it.

It is indeed cooling down now... until the next time.

By comparison, there is the recent (Tuesday) example of the Anak Krakatau erupting after 6000 to 7000 tremors PER DAY:

Quote Anak Krakatau, a volcanic island in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia, erupted on Tuesday ...

    [...]

The Indonesian Volcanology and Geology Disaster Mitigation Centre reported that an estimated 6,000-7,000 volcanic earthquakes were recorded daily during the weekend and on Monday. Daily earthquake totals usually do not exceed 100-200
    From: http://www.irishweatheronline.com/ne...pts/40655.html

That gives a rough idea as to when the situation can be called critical at El Hierro; if it ever gets there.

The Director General of Security and Emergency of the Canary Islands, Juan Manuel Santana, has asked this morning in Madrid at the meeting of the State Committee for the Coordination of Civil Protection for Volcanic Risk, the Geological Survey assess the risk of landslides in El Hierro.

In this regard, the Secretary of Interior, Pilar Gallego, who chaired the meeting, instructed the Government Delegation in the Canary Islands to convene a meeting in the coming days to address this issue, which is of vital importance to the inhabitants of the Island .

As you may recall the risk of landslides is the main effect they are having earthquakes that affect El Hierro, especially since September 24 when it increased its intensity.

In this vein, the president of the Cabildo de El Hierro, Alpidio Armas, after a meeting with island, in Valverde, said "the situation has not changed and remain the preventive measures taken."

    Evolution of the phenomenon

In recent days, scientists from IGN, the official organ for volcano monitoring have detected a shift of the phenomenon south of the island on the Sea of calms. Until this trend is confirmed by the scientists themselves, the Government will keep the yellow light, recommending that people watch for official communications and to implement measures for self-distributed.

The latest official summary of activity reflected the ground deformation has exceeded 35 mm and that yesterday, October 2, there were two earthquakes way, both of magnitude greater than or equal to three, one at 12:31: 11 hours and a second at 19:39:49 hours.
