Volcanic rocks floating on the island of El Hierro

THE CRISIS
Eruption on the island of El Hierro is currently composed of an underwater basaltic fissure eruption from several vents, located in the sea about 350 m deep and 2 km from La Restinga, in the southernmost tip of the island. This long process (precursor seismicity started in July this year and the submarine eruption on 10 October) is causing significant economic losses and a prolonged state of anxiety in the population of the island.

Although the National Geographic Institute has managed the process and accompanying seismic precursor eruption perfectly, with remarkable dedication and efficiency, the advice given regarding the eruptive process has been nothing short of a disaster, equivalent to the famous "Prestige" (2002) or the "threads of clay."

The last episode of this scientific disaster, caused by the efforts of the CSIC and the Canarian Government to put this task of volcanological advice into the hands of scientists who know neither the island nor this type of volcanism, have been the thoughtless remarks of a professor at the University of Barcelona, ​​claiming that the volcanic bombs thrown to the surface by the volcano on La Restinga (quickly dubbed locally as "restingolitas") are formed by a mixture of basaltic magma (black outer crust) and rhyolite (white interior ). Rhyolitic magma being generally very rich in gas, and therefore very explosive, its interaction with this safer basaltic magma eruption would give a much higher explosive potential. The immediate consequence has been the emergence of this news in the media and a significant increase in the alarm in the hard hit town of El Hierro. The response from the representative of CSIC, equally erroneous, has been to diminish this explosive potential when considering a magma mixing between basalt and trachyte, an intermediate explosive magmatic material.

Given the direction the matter has taken, a copy of the article entitled "A volcano emitting Sandstones? The particular case of El Hierro, Canary Islands" has been submitted to the Government of the Canary Islands.

"A volcano emitting sandstone? The peculiar case of El Hierro, Canary Canarias" was sent to Science Now, the online home of the magazine Science News of the AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science), the largest general scientific society. This report, coordinated by Professor Valentin Troll, Uppsala University (Sweden) has been done in record time by a large group of scientists that includes German (Leibniz Institute of Oceanography in Kiel and Munich's Ludwig-Maximilians ) and Italian (National Institutes of Rome and Pisa and Grupo Synchrotron, Trieste), plus the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (the author of this article).

So there is another basaltic magma which, in its progression, includes this sedimentary material with a thickness of several kilometers and is forming the upper part of the oceanic crust and the substrate which supports the Canary Islands. From where, then, is coming the interpretation of the scientists at the University of Barcelona and CSIC? It might be a mistake for beginners to use a classification system of volcanic rocks for a material that is of sedimentary origin. When a silica-rich sediment is projected on a TAS diagram (alkalis versus silica), falls into the field that corresponds to trachytes and phonolites, although it is a sedimentary material. Both magmas scaremongering with explosives to be most likely a harmless ocean sediments ... Wet gunpowder!

Spain's problem has always been the inability to properly select the best people for specific missions. The deep Catholic roots of our country has belonging to "good families" or "powerful groups" prevailing over personal efforts, the spirit of achievement and experience. The "given" rather than earned from one's own efforts. And so it has gone forever.

CSIC and the Canarian government could have saved themselves the embarrassment if, instead of forming an exclusive closed shop, they would have allowed more and more open participation. In fact, the samples used for this report had to be obtained in a surreptitious manner as official requests received no response, encouraging hoarding by a few.
