    ULPGC scientists IN El Hierro

Researchers at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria resume Monday (11/14/11) oceanographic campaign in the north of El Hierro, after participating in research conducted aboard the research vessel 'Ramon Margalef' Institute Spanish Oceanography (IEO), which successfully completed the campaign Bimbache-3 in the south of the island of El Hierro. This time, the campaign in the north, where most movements are occurring lately, and the main objective of the research is still perform a physical-chemical and biological waters affected by the volcanic phenomenon and to study the impact of emissions on marine organisms in the region.

62 Kilos Sunfish caught in the Canarias

    antena3.com | Gran Canaria | Updated on 14/11/2011 at 19:12 hours

Four friends went fishing this weekend in Gran Canaria, and took more than one hour to get onto the boat a sunfish weighing 62 kilos.

Once in the port they celebrated, because a catch like that is the illusion of any fisherman. Experts have explained that this type of fish can be found in the waters around the globe, including one hundred and four feet deep.

Its meat is a highly prized salmon in Asia. For this reason they decided to cut it, keep it, and eat it. His bone was so strong that no one could open it. even with a hatchet and it was necessary to use special instruments to cut through the bone.

Despite its size, one can say that the animal was not overly large as this species have been cataloged specimens of 270 kilos. This fish is more commonly in South Australia and the Caribbean.

Strongest so far (3.4 at 08:52)

    For the day:

Frequencies spectrogram, the vertical streaks indicate “events” (tremors/EQs) whereas the horizontal ones reflect volcanic/magmatic activity:
Quote From Wikipedia: A Harmonic tremor is a sustained release of seismic and/or infrasonic energy typically associated with the underground movement of magma and/or venting of volcanic gases from magma. Being a long-duration continuous signal from a temporally extended source, a volcanic tremor contrasts distinctly with transient sources of seismic radiation, such as tremors that are typically associated with earthquake and explosion.

How it's looking like now from Las Puntas de La Frontera:

Refresh your browser to get the latest traces

For the last 10 days, following the count of EQs as shown by the orange bars (≥ 2.0), it now shows a definite increase in seismic activity:

New cumulative graph starting October 10, 2011. The continuously changing scales keeps compressing the earlier graphs to the bottom and to the left!

Location of the EQs for the last 10 days:

On the first video one could find what observers have called "two zones of bubbling" one on the far left and one where the pyroclasts are popping up.

As seen with this video from farther away:

IGN REGISTER 6 EARTHQUAKES SO FAR FOR TUESDAY

    DIARIOELHIERRO.ES, writing (11.15.2011. 6:25 pm)

The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has registered on the island of El Hierro until 4:47 pm today, Tuesday November 15, a total of six earthquakes of between 2.1 and 2.9 degrees magnitude on the Richter scale.

Of the six earthquakes detected so far, two have been of 2.9 magnitude on the Richter scale. At the moment, IGN does not contain any earthquakes that have been felt by the population.

According to the National Geographic Institute (IGN) collected by Diario EL HIERRO and could be subject to change, the six earthquakes were located in the northwestern town of La Frontera, in the sea, and between 17 and 23 miles of depth.

    TREMOR AND DEFORMATION

Moreover, recent data collected by Pevolca for the level of tremors, are with very few pulses of short duration (minutes) during the day yesterday, no major changes in the amplitude of tremor in the background. In the analysis of seismic data it does not show evidence of a second source of tremor in the north.

As for the deformations, the monitoring stations in the east of l Golfo show stability on the island, except for a slight tendency towards the north of the station located in tEl Golfo HI03. In the vertical component there is still a phenomenon of deflation in the south of the island.

    RECOMMENDATIONS

The direction of Pevolca recommends that people follow the recommendations made to earthquakes and be attentive to the instructions of the authorities, both through the media, the telephone number for citizens of the Canary Islands, 012, and page Canary Islands Government website, www.gobiernodecanarias.org / DGSE / sismo_hierro.html and the Cabildo de El Hierro, www.emergenciaselhierro.org.

The eruption of El Hierro increases the sea temperature to 30.9 degrees Celsius

    EUROPA PRESS, S / C Tenerife (11.15.2011. 10:09 pm)

Scientists at the Institute of Technology and Renewable Energies (ITER), an agency of the Cabildo of Tenerife and now form part of volcanological Institute of the Canaries (Involcan) have informed the management of the Civil Protection Special Plan for Volcanic Risk Canary Islands (Pevolca) on the temperature evolution reflected from the surface manifestation (bubble zone) of the submarine eruption of El Hierro. Higher temperatures reflected in sea surface were recorded on 6, 7 and 8 November, reaching values of 30.9 ° C, 24.8 ş C and 29.7 ° C.

The difference between the maximum and minimum temperatures in the maritime environment reflected surface south of La Restinga using thermal imaging cameras in mobile air position was 1.5 ° C to 9.1 ş C during the period from October 19 to November 12.

In this timeframe the highest values recorded between maximum and minimum temperatures of 8.3 ° C reflected, 6.8 ş C and 9.1 ş C were observed on days 6, 7 and 8 November.

These anomalies were recorded prior to the intense bubbling registered on November 8, bringing water, gas and ash that reached suspended several meters above the water surface.

These temperature differences in the surface environment of the Sea of Calms clearly show a significant heat flow as a result of submarine eruption and allows us to make estimates of the volume of magma required to produce these temperature anomalies in the surface environment of the sea.

The record of this series was made possible by the support and collaboration of the Helicopter Service of the Guardia Civil, in the framework of a cooperation agreement between the Involcan and the airline industry in the Canary Islands Civil Guard to strengthen the geophysical program (thermometry and thermography) that provides Involcan for volcano monitoring in the Canary Islands and Makavol project 'Strengthening of R & D + i + d to contribute to the reduction of volcanic risk in the Macaronesia (MAC/3/C161 ) 'which is being funded by the transnational Cooperation Programme of the European Union Madeira-Canary-Azores (MAC 2007-2013).

Involcan is an institution demanded unanimously by the Senate (2005), Parliament of the Canary Islands (2006) and House of Representatives (2009) with the aim of contributing to improving and optimizing the management of volcanic risk in Spain.

This photograph, taken by ILoveSantaCruz.com, you can calculate the enormous size of eruptive focus. If we consider that the helicopter has a wingspan of 12 meters and was above the bubbling zone, this would be around 240 meters.

    Hi Twincans!

See post # 1120 and post # 1294 for background data on this.

The idea is that the magma chamber underneath El Hierro is displacing the ground on El Hierro. That ground displacement, recorded through GPS stations, is analyzed along three components: two horizontal and one vertical.

A deflation indicates a negative displacement (sinking) and is assumed to be due to magma erupting whereas a positive displacement (inflating, rising ground) is correlated to fresh magma injections (refill of the chamber).

    Hope this clarifies it?

PS: All displacements are measured in millimeters.
